Franklin L. Schuckers

 

Franklin L. Schuckers, 75, of 128 Carson St., Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands DuBois, DuBois, PA on Saturday afternoon (October 30, 2021). He was born August 8, 1946 in DuBois, PA a son of the late Kenneth Dale and Mary Katherine Cramer Schuckers. He married the late Diane Cassels Schuckers. They were married over fourteen years. Franklin graduated from Cameron County High School and served with the US Army during Vietnam Era. He retired, in 2007, from Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, the K of C and the Christabelle Club, American Legion, VFW, and served on the Cameron County Memorial Detail for many years. He enjoyed his beloved dog “Muie”.

He is survived by a son, Earl Schuckers, Emporium; daughter, Shannon (Brent) Schuckers-Milkovich, Weedville; step-son, Adam (Rebecca) Kopp, Pasadena MD; step-daughter, Robynne (Michael) Jordan, Wilcox; six grandchildren: Julia, Jordan, Kayleen, Carissa, Becca and Derek; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth E. (Marian) Schuckers and Lanny J. (Roxanne) Schuckers both of Emporium.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by sister, Helen Darlene Weekly.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 East 4th Street, Emporium, PA on Thursday morning (November 4, 2021) from 9-10:45 AM followed by Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA at 11:00 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant. A Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail. Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Memorial Contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

Tales of Our Past at our History Book Bash!

The Cameron County Historical Society has spent the last year celebrating our 100th anniversary. As we bring the year to a close we're ready to share some amazing tales. On Saturday November 6 at Emporium VFW at 1 PM The tales are going to come from the books that our researchers, genealogists and historians have created throughout the years. Featuring the actual creators of our books who will share their favorite stories with excerpts of Cameron Counties past. It will be like sitting around with family and friends relaxing and reminiscing the past. We'll talk about amazing discoveries such as the dig that uncovered giant skeletons, a forest fire that occurred that remains today as a case study for the training of firefighters nationwide in their lessons learned program. How our local industries put us on the map worldwide, the ghost towns that we still visit today to regain the feel of our ancestors pasts. Not to forget a story about a hunting camp that carried many a tale or two. 

 There will be a Chinese Auction, door prizes, plenty of snacks and beverages so you can kick back, relax, and listen to the sound of our counties past.

The store will be open Wednesdays - Fridays from 10-5, and Saturdays 10-2.

Despite the over cast weather, lots of trick or treaters were out on the streets of Emporium.  Businesses were handing out candy & many children visited the Trunk or Treat event at Reid's Hometown NAPA 

 

Guy and Mary Felt Manor Update

Thank you to all the staff at Guy & Mary Felt Manor for keeping the residents safe in their home away from home. 

At one time I was employed there for 8 years and I know how much work there is to do. We are so fortunate to have this facility in our town.

 Staff shortages, work overload, low census, and lack of supplies are phrases we have heard throughout the pandemic. The continued loss of staff and long work hours have taken its toll on long term staff members who have remained in their positions throughout the pandemic.

 Many staff members are doing things that are not their normal jobs just to keep the facility operating. Department heads are working as Charge Nurses on the floor and administering medications. Dietary personnel are working multiple positions to ensure all the residents are getting their meals on time. Activity personnel are the cheerleaders making us all smile when we can barely keep our heads up. Nursing personnel are working multiple shifts and coming in on their day off just to supply coverage. The list goes on. These workers are selfless and giving of their time, but it has been both physically and emotionally draining. 

 This past year has not exactly been a joyride. The pandemic has killed our spirit, our mindset, our meaning and purpose why we are here. Census dropped, beds emptied, costs increased and many workers left and never returned. And like so many other businesses, we had no new prospects showing up at our door asking for jobs. 

As we move into another holiday season dealing with the COVID pandemic, we understand that residents and families want to spend time together. Please know that we at Felt Manor will continue to provide a safe environment for our residents and staff and continue to allow visits as we deem are safe. Please continue to follow the guidelines for visitation and adhere to infection prevention principles such as remaining six feet apart, wear face covering, and limiting the number of visitors at one time. If you do plan to visit, please avoid large gatherings, crowded areas and high risk activities prior to making an appointment to visit. Even if you are fully vaccinated, you can still be a carrier of COVID. We all have one purpose and that is to protect the vulnerable residents we care for. We here at Felt Manor are survivors because that is what we do.

 We will continue to fight through this pandemic and come out on the other side stronger than before. We express our sincere gratitude for all the support we have received from families, friends, and the community throughout this pandemic.

Halloween Extravaganza Update - Cancellations

 Due to the weather, Smoker Logging Inc. is canceling the Halloween extravaganza.

We will still be down to play music and set up a table at the chambers trunk or treat. All other business’ are welcome to still come set up a table and hand out candy. Anytime lunch time food truck will still be present at the square and will be ready to serve at 2:30. Rich valley wines will also be in the square.

 Hey Everyone!!! I just wanted to clean up some rumors that I have been hearing! 

Cameron County Nutrition is ABSOLUTELY opening. I promise you all that.

 Unfortunately I have ran in to a few set backs because life happens but I promise you I will be up and running before the end of November. Once I get a plumber in to the shop, (very difficult finding one available currently), I will be able to set up my inspection. When inspection is completed I will be up and running. I apologize for the slow process in opening but I assure you the wait will be totally worth it in the end

The Cameron County Recreation Center is in search of applicants for a position as a Game Room Attendant. Applicants must be able to attain all necessary clearances and be at least 21 years old. The Game Room Attendant maintains the function of the game room during regular scheduled hours on a part time basis. This position reports directly to the Recreation Director. Job responsibilities include supervising youth (ages 8-18), maintaining the function and order of the Game Room and Basketball Court, regular light cleaning, and keeping track of equipment use, snack and membership sales, and sign in sheets. We are looking for candidates with excellent communication skills, who are reliable, and are interested in helping us maintain a safe and fun space for the community’s youth. Write in Misty Orner for CC School Board

 

Hello, my name is Misty Orner and I am running for a seat on the Cameron County School District school board. My running for school board will allow me to advocate for the education of all children in our community and to ensure our tax dollars are being spent wisely and truly. 

I believe that a school board must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff, students, and all the community, encouraging an open dialog with respect. The board must take input from all groups and weigh all the facts before making any decisions. Anyone that comes before the board has the right to be “heard”, not just speak. 

My focus as a board member would be on serving all the children in the community, one child is no more important than another. Our schools are here to serve the educational needs of all children. Those who choose to further their education in college, in trade schools, as home makers, as mechanics, etc.. Every child deserves a chance in our schools. 

One of the things that I would want to see changed is the relationship that the school board has with the public. There is a lack of trust and transparency between the public and the school board. The lack of follow through on requests for information and lack of action on issues that affect everyone in the district. The school board must always remember that they are there to serve us, the public.

 It’s not the number of years that you serve a community that qualifies or disqualifies a person from service. It’s the quality and results of that service that must be considered. I promise you, I am not a follower. I am not afraid to question the narrative. I will consider all information and facts and come to my own thought and conclusion when I vote. I will not be persuaded due to a clique. It is time for a change at Cameron County School District, and the time starts now.

 I would be honored to have your vote on November 2nd for school board member at large as a write in.

Meet Gannon's  marketing intern Ariel Farren!

Ariel has worked for the CSCGE for three years and loves the close knit family of the team and the opportunities given to grow as an individual and in knowledge. She is also an ABST leader for the Merida, Mexico ABST over Spring Break and has gone to Guatemala, L’Arche Ontario, and Asheville North Carolina through the Center. She has also been on a GIFT course to England & Wales.

 Ariel is a Senior majoring in Psychology with a minor in Biology. On campus, she is a member of the TRIO and TRAVEL programs and president of Gamma Sigma Sigma. Helping others and giving back to the community is something that is important to her! Ariel’s favorite place she has traveled to is either Maine or Guatemala

The Cameron County Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF recently donated $1000 to our local Food Pantry. This money was raised from our meat raffle fundraisers, so thank you to all our ticket buyers. Your support of our chapter helps us to support our community.

Rotary News

 

Tina Solak Johns, Executive Director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and news broadcaster for Salter Communications, spoke at the Rotary luncheon October 26th. Tina has held the chamber position for approximately 13 years and has been broadcasting local for approximately 16 years.

 Some background on our active director prior to coming to Emporium includes Tina holding a position at Lycoming College where she was head of the mail room. Tina attended college in Pittsburgh at Point Park where she majored in broadcasting. This education led her to television broadcasting in Scranton, PA, as well as working for a radio station in Williamsport. Among her commendable achievements were interviewing past presidents as well as Mother Theresa. Tina loves Cameron County and what she enjoys most is the quaintness which reminds her of her hometown, the fire whistle, bingo, little shops and lack of traffic. She is proud of how the chamber has grown along with events every year. 

 Tina gave some updates on all the activities and new businesses opening soon throughout the town such as Powdertown Mercantile Store, CDH Designs has purchased a new building, Cameron County Nutrition coming soon, former library opening up as a medical office, Drug & Alcohol has purchased the chamber building and expanding offices. Tina hopes everyone comes out December 3rd to watch the Christmas Parade with 20 floats this year. Also pictured is Rotarian, Sue Bucher (right).

Webelos Scouts 3-mile Nature Hike Cub scouts in grades 4 and 5 are invited to join the park naturalist on a 3-mile walk to look for animal tracks and traces, identify plants and trees, and learn about the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace principles. Program is designed to meet some but not all of the requirements for Webelos Walkabout and Outdoor Adventurer adventures. Program is FREE. Pre-registration required. All youth must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. All participants must be prepared by wearing sturdy shoes and appropriate clothes for the weather and by carrying a backpack with the Six Essentials. Open to all youth, grades 4-5. Pratts East End Beverage Harley Raffle Update

 Over the last few weeks, we have been asked by several people in regards to the Harley that Pratt's East End Beverage wanted to raffle off for a prize at our grand opening. As some you may or may not know it was brought to our attention in mid-August that the verbiage on the original ticket was incorrect and at that time the club whose small game of chance license that we were using to raffle this off decided to bow out of the raffle. 

 We still wanted to see this bike go to someone that had taken a chance on it and approach another club regarding using their small game of chance license to raffle the bike off. After deliberation with them regarding the bike and trying to meet the government outlines regarding raffling of this we were not being able to come to an agreement that the government would be satisfied with and the decision has been made to not raffle off the bike and to refund all monies that had been collected for the tickets that had already been sold. 

 Starting today 10/19/2020 we will begin to refund this money. We are going to allow anyone that would want their money immediately to come into the beverage and we will refund the money in cash. We are going to allow this refund to go on for two weeks. After the two-week period we will then send check via the USPS to anyone that has not been refunded. We are requesting that if you are not local to the area and are planning to make the trip to Emporium that you, please let us know so that we are able to take you off of the to be mailed list. My name is Natasha Ariel (Ackman) Macro and I am running as a “write-in” for the Cameron County School Board on November 2, 2021. 

For those that don’t know me, I am a 2003 graduate of Cameron County High School. I’ve lived in Emporium my entire life, I’m a small town girl, who knows the “small town world”. I have one daughter that attends CCSD. 

I am not your typical political candidate; however, I am a very passionate and compassionate person. I give anything and everything I do 100%. I like to “keep it real” and “call things how they are”. I am an amazing listener and value others opinions/concerns. 

 As a member of the school board, I promise to listen to every side to every scenario and weigh out all facts/information prior to making any decisions. I promise to put our children FIRST in EVERY single scenario. This will be regardless of last names, agendas, bias, ya’ know all the small town stuff. My votes, will be my judgement. They will always be based on facts/information and nothing more. 

 As a member of the school board, I promise to be transparent with the community and to work together with the community to insure our children are being supplied with the best education they possibly can at our school district. 

 The school board serves the community and the people of Cameron County. They are elected to be the voice and to make a difference. I promise I will help to make those changes and be that difference! Let’s make CCSD great again!

Ralph E. Bennett

 

Ralph E. Bennett, 68, of West Allegany Avenue, Emporium, PA passed away at Penn Highlands DuBois, DuBois, PA on Sunday morning (October 24, 2021).

He was born August 23, 1953 in Ridgway, PA a son of Shirley Feldbauer Bennett, St. Marys and the late Clifford Bennett, Sr.

Ralph served with the US Navy during the Vietnam Era. He worked at Luigi's in Emporium for many years. He was a simple, outgoing but quiet man who enjoyed being around people. Ralph loved his dog "Max"

He is survived by a brother, Roger (Donna) Bennett, Michigan; four sisters, Geraldine Bell, Ridgway; Marsha (John) Banks, Emporium; Charlotte (Mike) Burgard, Florida; Lori (Jerry) Haynes, Gardeau along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Clifford Bennett, Sr. and a brother, Clifford Bennett, Jr. and a niece and two nephews.

There will be No Visitation. A Private Family Service will be held at a later date

Burial will be in the Ridge Cemetery, Kersey, PA

Spooktacular Halloween Fun at Sinnemahoning State Park

Spooktacular Halloween Fun at Sinnemahoning on Saturday, October 30th. 

Join Sinnemahoning State Park staff for a fun-filled afternoon in nature celebrating all things Halloween! From games and crafts, to a nature walk and spooky science, this day is sure to be a hoot! 

Programs include: Owl Craft, 12:00 - 1:00 PM, ages 4-10, Creepy Crawly Critter Quest, 1:30 - 2:30 PM, ages 4-10, Spooky Science, 3:00 - 4:00 PM, ages 6 to adult. 

 Games and activities for all ages will be held between programs. Costumes are encouraged! Sweet treats will be offered for visitors in costumes.

 Meet in the Wildlife Center classroom. No pre-registration is required. Stop by anytime throughout the afternoon.

Halloween Activities 

Smoker Logging bringing the Halloween Extravaganza to Emporium Saturday October 30 in conjunction with the borough’s trick or treat, business trick or treat and trunk or treat. The fun starts at 3:30pm with Guy and Mary Felt Manor offering outdoor trick or treating. DJ Smokin Sounds will set the mood in the Dolan Hotel lot in downtown Emporium. Businesses and trunk or treat will hand out treats from 4-6.

 

Trunk or Treat will take place in the Reid’s Hometown Emporium NAPA lot. Organizers say if that lot fills, participants are encouraged to set up along Fourth Street. Two contests will be held including best decorated trunk and children can win prizes for best costume.

 

In front of the stage blow up slides, hay bale maze, food trucks, and the opportunity to win a dump truck load of firewood all sponsored by Smoker Logging will continue until 9pm.Emporium Borough Trick or Treat hours are 6-8pm by porch light invite.

Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Program

 Our church will be participating in the Samaritan’s Purse shoe box program this year that ships gift boxes to kids across the globe. You may pick up a shoebox from the ushers and they must be returned to our church by November 7, 2021. A pamphlet is on each shoebox stating what is needed.

Fred (Freddy) Vincenti was born and raised in Florida spending most of his time in the Tampa Bay area where he graduated from the Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. In addition to his marketing degree, Freddy has also obtained a degree in Film and Television Production from Full Sail University.

Freddy has spent the past twenty years employed by the School District of Hillsborough County. There he taught several subjects including Marketing and the Academy of Finance. When he wasn't working his day job, Freddy was instrumental in the establishment of the Tampa Bay craft beer scene assisting such breweries as Grindhaus Brew Lab and Saint Somewhere with their marketing and promotions.

In 2013 Fred worked alongside local business leaders in historic Tarpon Springs on the development of an annual Oktoberfest celebration. With several thousand attendees each year, Tarpon Springs Oktoberfest has grown to become one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations in the state of Florida.

Freddy moved to Emporium in the summer of 2021 with his wife Jean Anne, who works from home as a chemist for Quala, a tank and container cleaning company. Together they have two children, Mitchell, 24, who is a fifth grade teacher in Pasco County, Florida. And Mya, 21, who is currently attending the prestigious University of Vermont Nurse Practitioner grad school program.

Freddy and his wife enjoy spending time with their four cats, Buddy, Holly, Bessie and Puss as well as their dog Goddy (short for Godzilla). When not working, Freddy and his wife enjoy hiking and taking scenic drives.

ROTARY RAISES FUNDS FOR POLIO ERADICATION

 

The Emporium Rotary Club celebrated “World’s Greatest Meal” October 24th to raise money for the eradication of polio. Rotarians hosted a meal for the club, and members donated to Polio Plus.

 

Poliomyelitis (Polio) attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis in hours. The virus is spread person to person-typically by contaminated water. Polio mainly affects children under 5 (but any age can contract), there is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine. Only 2 countries remain endemic with wild poliovirus (Pakistan & Afghanistan). Rotary has reduced cases by 99.9% since 1988.

 

Along with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, Rotarians have contributed $2.2 billion, countless volunteer hours and have protected nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this devastating disease. Polio funds raised are also matched 2-1 by Bill and Melinda Gates Fund. Today, 19 million people who would otherwise be paralyzed are walking and 1.5 million people who would otherwise have died are alive. If eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year

Sheetz increases College Tuition Program

 

Sheetz announced it will now provide $5,250 per year ($2,625 per semester) to employees who are enrolled in the company’s College Tuition Reimbursement program. This is a $3,750 per year increase from the amount Sheetz previously offered through the program.

Marie G. Bowser

 

Marie G. Bowser, 85, of 92 Kinley Drive, Ridgway, died on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021 at Penn Highlands Elk following a brief illness.

She was born on April 18, 1936, in Butler, a daughter of the late Abner Grossman, Sr., and Viola Zerlo Grossman. On September 2, 1961, in Butler, she married the late Arnold “Sonny” Bowser, who preceded her in death on September 23, 2009. Marie was a kind, loving, and hardworking mother and grandmother who was very intelligent and generous. When her children were little, Marie could often be found playing the violin to calm her family and she was adored by each and every one of her children and grandchildren. After attending Penn State at the age of 58, Marie became a certified paralegal, an accomplishment that she was very proud of. Her children were finally able to convince her to retire at age 74, after working for the Community Nurses for several years and selling Avon for more than 50 years. Marie welcomed all her neighborhood friends with open arms, and many lovingly called her “Mom”, with Marie never forgetting a birthday, anniversary, or special event. She was currently raising her four grandchildren; Olivia, Alyssa, Gavin and Gabriel Bodien, following the unexpected death of her daughter, Nancy. She was Protestant by faith and loved researching her ancestry. She embraced technology and loved to read and will be fondly remembered for her apple crisp, if you were lucky enough to get a piece before it was gone! Her legacy is her family, and her love will remain engraved on their hearts forever with how proud she was of each of them.

Marie is survived by seven children; Donald (Carol) Bowser of Emporium, Robert (Clara) Bowser of St. Marys, Kathy Haberberger of Ridgway, Arnie (Amy) Bowser, Jr., of St. Marys, John (Brenda) Bowser of Brookville, David Bowser of Perkiomenville, and Steve (Terry) Bowser of Ridgway. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and by one brother; Abner Grossman of Pittsburgh.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three children; Nancy Bodien in 2016, Shirl Hanes in 2017 and Willis Jordan in 2017, a sister-in-law, Shirl Duncan and by several dearly loved grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Marie G. Bowser will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at 10:00 AM at the TCC Ridgway Campus, 315 Center Street, Ridway, Pa 15853 with Rev. Ron Burkett officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be at the Krise Funeral Home on Friday, October 22, 2021, from 4:00-8:00 PM.
