Campaign to Elect Paul Malizia for District Attorney
My Fellow Citizens of Cameron County,
A short time ago I announced in the Echo that I am running for District Attorney.
Over the coming weeks, in print, online, and hopefully in-person, you will hear my argument about why I strongly believe that I am the best candidate to address our County's current problems in the capacity as the District Attorney.
We did it before, and we can do it again. Thank you for your continued support!

Community Chest Update - The Garden Club
As of March 15th, we had collected $14,440 toward our $19,000 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed so far.
The Cameron County Community Chest needs additional donors to reach its community goal. The donor base has continued to shrink. New donors are needed. If you have not supported your community fund drive, please consider making a donation to help them reach their goal. The funds raised help support local community services. Make the county proud and make a generous contribution to the 2019 fund drive.
This month’s featured organization will be the Garden Club.
The Garden Club uses funds raised for their projects to beautify our community. The members of this club plant and take care of the flowers & shrubs at the Library, Veterans’ Memorial Park, Northwest Savings Bank, Citizens and Northern Bank and the containers in the Downtown area. They do the seasonal decorations inside the library. The Garden club helps with the plantings at Sinnemahoning State Park as well as taking care of the atrium at Guy & Mary Felt Manor. They club participates in the October Festival at Sizerville State Park and has a display at the Cameron County Fair. They also do litter pick up and recycling for a two-mile stretch of Rt.120W three times a year as part of the “Adopt-A-Highway” program. In 2010 they were asked to help with the plantings at the new visitor center at Sinnemahoning State Park. Two years ago, they were able to purchase and install a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker at the Cameron County Veterans’ Park.
The theme this year for the Emporium Garden Club is: “Heads to the Sun, Hands in the Dirt”. The object of the club is to develop the knowledge and love of gardening for the mutual benefit of members and community.
The Club has many activities planned for 2019. On March 25th we will start the year by having Josh Zucal and Alex Reed from Good Things Growing enlighten us on their new business. This will be open to the public if anyone is interested. On April 29th we will have our Annual Kick-Off dinner at 5PM at the Aroma with guests Jim & Selene Machuga from Deer Springs Homestead in Bradford, PA. They will be discussing Edible Landscaping and their health benefits. April showers bring May flowers so in May we will be doing our annual plantings in the downtown areas. June will find us carpooling to State College to the Snetsinger Butterfly Gardens. In July we will be maintaining our plantings at the Library, Vets’ Park and the gardens at the elementary school followed by a picnic. In August we will enter our display at the Cameron County Fair along with participating in the Jan Hampton Conservation night and have a hands-on craft for the children. With September being a great time to harvest our gardens we will have a “Harvest Dinner” and fellow garden club member, Darlene Davis, will discuss horticulture. Fall always brings the Fall Festival at Sizerville State Park where we will have a craft table for the children. In November we will have guest speaker John Sidelinger who is on the Shade Tree Commission and also a local artist. December will find us at the new business of Sarah Nolan where we will enjoy a Christmas Party.
Watch for information on the upcoming events and ways to help in our community. Volunteers are always welcome. For more information on the Garden Club, these activities, or to participate

Welcome to Driftwood Signs
From vision to reality - sometimes all it takes is one person with an idea. Three Welcome to Driftwood signs have been installed alongside Rt 120 East & West and Rt 155 entering the Driftwood Borough area. These signs aren't there to mark the borough boundaries, but are there to provide people with a welcoming visual impression of Driftwood from all 3 directions, to let them know where they are and to welcome them. Local resident Randy Bailey has been working on this project since last spring and after almost a year, the project is well on its way to being finished. When I asked Randy what prompted him to think of this sign project his response was " I live in a beautiful place and am proud to call Cameron County my home. Through working with Sylvan Heritage Council and being involved with a few projects that have turned out really well I wanted to turn my attention to the southern end of the county, for now Driftwood.
Funding was secured from the Driftwood Borough, the Sylvan Heritage Council, the Cameron County Commissioners and Randy Bailey. Sign design was by Action Graphics. Matt Andrews donated top soil and cut stone while J & J service helped with sign installation
Last week commissioners and some members of the Sylvan Heritage Council met with Randy and Jason Fabian ( who helped with sign installation) to see these beautiful signs.

TICK BITE PREVENTION AND TICK REMOVAL
TICK BITE PREVENTION AND TICK REMOVAL
It's that time of year again. Spring. Spring to summer and fall weather increases our exposure to ticks. Unfortunately, there is an abundance of ticks in our area. Listed below is an article from the CDC on tick removal. I highly recommend visiting these two links.
Tick and Lymes disease is a real issue.
Individuals with exposure to wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter are at greatest risk of tick exposure. It is important to remind patients to reduce the likelihood of a tick bite by:
*walking in the center of trails and avoiding areas with high grass and leaf litter;
*using repellent that contains at least 20% DEET on exposed skin and use products that contain 0.5% permethrin on clothing;
*wearing light-colored clothing, which will make it easier to see crawling ticks;
*conducting full-body tick checks (also check pets) after spending time in tick habitat; and
*bathing or showering within 2 hours after coming indoors.
If an attached tick is found, it should be promptly removed using fine-tipped tweezers. The tick should be grasped as close to the skin’s surface as possible and pulled upward with steady, even pressure. CDC’s directions for tick removal can be found here:

Alumni Association Announces Banquet Changes
Alumni Association Announces Banquet Changes
Recently, the EHS-CCHS Alumni Association has made substantial changes to
their rules regarding attendance at the annual banquet. The changes have
been brought about due to declining participation over the past several years.
In 2018, the Association granted membership status to any person who had
attended Emporium or Cameron County High Schools and did not graduate due
to extenuating circumstances, but subsequently received a GED or the PA
Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma. Also, the Association permitted
any member of the 50-year reunion class to bring a non-alumnus guest to
the
banquet.
For 2019, further changes have been enacted. Now, any alumnus, regardless
of graduation year, may bring a guest to the banquet. Furthermore, non-alumni
parents or guardians (limit of 2) may attend the banquet along with their
graduating senior child.
The 2019 banquet will be held on Saturday, May 25 beginning at 6:00 PM. A
social gathering time has been scheduled for 5:30. The cost for each attendee
is $20.00. Reservation forms will be published soon.
The Association leadership anticipates these changes will help spark interest,
not only in banquet attendance, but also in planning committee participation.
For questions, please contact the Association by email: cmpony@zitomedia.net
or phone: 814-486-1921.

Rotary News
George Salter, Plant Manager, of Keystone Automatic Technologies, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting, April 9th. Keystone, a secondary operation, was started in 1978 by owners Dr. Charles Blumle, Fred Bignell, Ray Housler and Joe Newton. In 1985, the company relocated to the current location at 1 South Maple Street, a former Sylvania building. In 1986, Al Barry joined as a salesman and in 1988 Charles Blumle and Al Barry became the sole owners and started updating equipment. July of 2014, MetalKraft Industries out of Wellsboro purchased the company which runs 1 shift with 21 employees.
The company is a manufacturer of high quality, precision parts made from most metals. Processes include cold heading, wire forming with four-sides, press stamping, nail making and thread rolling. Most of us can find something we own in our homes made at Keystone. Some of the parts are in cardiac catheterization pumps, staple gun rods, nails in garden equipment, tips for spanner wrenches just to name a few.
They are very proud of the CCHS students participating for the first time with 16 different schools and winning an award in the Northern Central’s “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” video
at their plant.

Pic of the Day
The first fire. They are all good, but I always enjoy this one so much. The spring air, starry nights, sounds of the "peepers", warmth from the fire, family. Leaving the winter behind and anticipation of enjoying the spring weather and all this season holds.
GKN & Employees Support CC Community Chest
GKN & GKN EMPLOYEES
ARE A
MAJOR SUPPORTER OF THE
CAMERON COUNTY COMMUNITY CHEST
2019 FUND DRIVE
Over the past 43 years GKN Sinter Metals Emporium facilities (originally PPM) have been supporting the Cameron County Community Chest via employee contributions through payroll deduction. An added incentive is that the company also donates to the drive. Since the inception of this program, GKN has been a major contributor to the Cameron County Community Chest in helping it to meet the fund drive goals. Over the years since the program started, GKN has raised between 25% and 67% of the funds needed to hit the goals of the Community Chest.
This year the donations from GKN and its employees total $7,434. This represents 39% of the $19,000 goal. The CCCC commends GKN and their employees for their continued support of the Cameron County Community Chest.
With the donation from GKN, we have collected $21,886 toward our $19,000 goal. We have reached our goal. Thanks to all who have contributed to the 2019 Fund Drive.
We still need your support. We will keep this drive open through September 2019.
No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager. Or, go to our Face book page for the convenience of using Pay-pal. Help to support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, Package Team, Garden Club, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Sylvan Heritage, 4-H, SPCA, and Special Community Requests.
