Rotary News


Rotarian, Carol Frank, introduced guest speaker, Cameron County Chief Deputy Sheriff, Brian Harmon, at the Rotary luncheon May 30th. Brian’s career has been from uniform to uniform. After graduating from Red Bank Valley High School in 1989, he joined the military attending boot camp at Fort Jackson, SC, and then to AIT training at Fort Gordon, GA. Next was Fort Riley, KS where he served for 2 years in the 1st Infantry Division - 72 ECHO assigned to head quarter command center. When the Persian Gulf War broke out in 1990, he deployed to, Saudi Arabia also spending time in Iraq & Kuwait. Brian said “the military provided him with guidance, discipline and an education.

When his enlistment was up in 1992, he thought about his future and heard that the PA State Police were hiring. Two weeks later, took a written test, along with 17,000 other people, and placed high enough to be awarded an oral interview. In January 1993 he was accepted and attended the PA State Police Academy afterward assigned to Troop F in Mansfield where he spent 15 months. In October 1994, Brian, just 23 years old, was reassigned to Emporium and has been here since. Brian has also been involved with the Northern Tier Camp Cadet for 13 years. After retirement, he was hired in his current positon with the Sheriff’s office.
 Rotary thanks Brian for his service to our country and to our community.

Stephen H. Gee


Stephen H. Gee, 80, of Clear Creek Road, Emporium, died Thursday, May 25, 2017, in his home. Born May 29, 1936 in Aseph, Pa., he was the son of Homer and Frances Schillinger Gee. On February 5, 1955, in the Rich Valley Wesleyan Church, he married Dona M. Donohue who survives.

Mr. Gee went to school in Emporium and from 1957-1959 lived in Dunkirk, NY. After returning to Emporium he built his home in Clear Creek where he lived since 1963. He was employed for over 40 years by Mallory Lumber in Emporium and was the maintenance supervisor before retiring in 2001.

He attended Faith Baptist Church in Emporium and was a man of strong faith who had read his bible many times over. He was able to fix anything, he always took care of his family, and he never gave up. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was a hero to all in his family.

 In addition to his wife, Dona, he is survived by: two daughters, Shirley (Frank) LaPolt of Emporium and Linda Gee of Snow Shoe; one son, Stephen (Amanda) Gee of Braidwood, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Wright, Erick (Deb Smith) LaPolt, Desiree and Kimberly Partington, Jeffrey Mann, and Marshall and Emmett Gee; four great grandchildren, Kayleigh Fye, Aurora Partington, and Amelia and Avery Smith; one great great grandson, Lincoln Kiser; a sister, Betty Howlett of Silver Creek, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Diana L. Gee, five brothers, Horace, Myron, Bruce, Kenneth and James Gee, and by three sisters, Jill Grolemond, Beverly Randazzo, and Emogene Gee.

A memorial service for Mr. Gee will be held Friday, June 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Faith Baptist Church on Rich Valley Road, Emporium, with Robert Spaeth of Emporium, officiating.

Burial will be in Rich Valley Cemetery, Shippen Township. Arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

Maxine M. George


Maxine M. George, 84, of 40 W. 5th St., Emporium, PA died at Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, PA Monday (May 29, 2017) morning. She was born September 16, 1932 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late John and Marian Cooper McManigle. On November 11, 1955 in Emporium she married the late James George. Mrs. George graduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1950. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandy (H.B. Von) Hause and Debra (Gregory) Magaro, both of Emporium; four grandchildren, Jon, Zachary, Christie & McKenzie and two great grandchildren, Autumn & Titus, four sisters, Jean Dunkleberger, Emporium; Virginia (Larry) Pope, Lawrenceville, GA; Phyllis Sullivan, Emporium and Judy Mongillo, Bradford.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marian Cooper McManigle, husband, James George, two grandsons, Timothy Slottje & Benjamin Hause; Sister, Elaine McManigle, two Brothers, David and John "Mick" McManigle,

There will be No Visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (June 3, 2017) at 10:30 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

 Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA Memorial.
 Contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

New Donors Needed for CC Community Chest

Cameron County Community Chest may not reach goal. 

The Cameron County Community Chest needs additional donors to reach its community goal. The board of directors met on May 9, to discuss the shortfall and potential promotions to increase revenues used to support local community service organizations. At this time the board is looking at a $3,000 shortfall. The donor base has continued to shrink. New donors are needed. If you have not supported your community fund drive please consider making a donation to help them reach their goal. If you have already made a generous contribution please consider an additional contribution. The funds raised help support local community services. Make the county proud and make a generous contribution to the 2017 fund drive.

Summer program registrations are now being accepted. Forms have been sent to the school so be sure to check your child's back packs and folders. You can always grab one from the Recreation Center.

Stephen H. Gee, age 80, of Clear Creek, Emporium died Thursday, May 25 in his home. 

 Funeral arrangements, under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, are incomplete and will be announced.

Mary Esther Tucker


Mary Esther Tucker, 96, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of Woodland Ave., Emporium & Portage, PA died at the Manor on Thursday (May 25, 2017) night.

 She was born January 8, 1921 in Portage, PA a daughter of the late Raymond and Mary Ritchey Stiffler. She married the late Lowane Tucker. Mary loved God and her family dearly. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She is survived by a niece, Elaine Crooks and her husband Bruce, Brush Valley, PA; and a great nephew, Brian Crooks, Pittsburgh; and a close friend, Janet Howard of Port Allegany. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Ritchey Stiffler; her husband, Lowane Tucker; one son, Ray Allen Tucker; one daughter, Janet E. Tucker; one brother, Franklin Stiffler and one sister, Margaret Stephenson,

 There will be No Visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park 1530 Frankstown Road, Johnstown, PA on Wednesday (May 31, 2017) at 12:00 PM with Rev. Mark Griffith, officiating.

Thomas Lee Pearson


Thomas Lee Pearson, 79, of Orlando, Florida, passed away on the morning of May 18, 2017 in the Orlando Regional Medical Center with his two children, Nancy Brodie of Altamonte Springs, Florida and Thomas Pearson of Presque Isle, Maine by his side.

Tom was born and raised in Emporium, the son of the late William Pearson and Dorothy (Rossman) Pearson. In 1958 he married the former Carol Swank who passed away in 2010 in their home in Orlando.

He served in the United States Navy before becoming a barber at Pearson's Barber Shop in Emporium. Bucktail Bank and Trust Company then became Tom's long-time employer where he advanced from teller to Vice President and manager of the Bradford branch. When he and Carol relocated to Orlando in 1989, he became transportation manager for several years at the Center for Independent Living. Known for his patience and kind demeanor, Tom became a favorite of the students and their parents at Lake Highland Preparatory School where he was also in transportation for many years.

Mr. Pearson was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Emporium. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing in and around Cameron County, and after relocating went on to fish many waterways in Florida. In addition to his two children, Tom is survived by his granddaughter Casey Brodie of Orlando, and his brother Donald Pearson of Emporium.

A visitation with memorial tribute will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery in Emporium.

Thomas Lee Pearson

Thomas Lee Pearson, 79, of Orlando, FL, formerly of Emporium, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 in the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

A visitation with Memorial Tribute will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

 A complete obituary will be published at a later date.

Walking Trail Highlighting Emporium

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and University of Pittsburgh to create a 1.67 mile walking loop through Emporium. The route is marked with green circles featuring an arrow.

The WalkWorks trail will be highlighted during National Trails Day on Saturday June 3. Participants are encouraged to meet at the starting point which is the gravel parking lot off of Chestnut Street near West Creek Rails Trail. Maps and a personal walking journal can be picked up at the Cameron County Chamber ofWalking Trail Highlighting Emporium
 Commerce.

“This program gives added exposure to the community through the WalkWorks web site, while benefitting residents,” says Tina Johns Solak, executive director of the chamber. Emporium Borough workers installed the signage. The route was selected by representatives of Sylvan Heritage Council, Lumber Heritage, the chamber, and the borough.

Across the state there are WalkWork trails in 14 counties. The closest to Cameron is McKean County which hosts 6 trails through communities. WalkWorks identifies and promotes safe walking routes, and supports walking groups.

Rotary News

Mason Shaffer was the first place winner of the Rotary 4 Way Speech Contest at the Rotary District 7360 Conference at Split Rock this past weekend with her speech on Feminism. She competed both locally here in Emporium and at the regional level before placing 1st at the district level, walking away with a trophy and cash prize of $1,000.00. Mason is also the first person to win the contest at the district level from Cameron County. The Emporium Rotary Club is very proud and congratulations Mason on her achievement. Mason is the daughter of Ken & Donna Shaffer.

Jim Burke

Jim Burke, former President of Burke’s Home Center in St. Marys, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon May 16th. 

 Introducing Jim, was Rotarian, Kathy Strycula, both were classmates of the Bennett’s Valley School, class of 1957. Jim spoke of a book he authored entitled, Pioneers of the Second Fork, and of many historical facts of pioneers in Cameron and Elk counties. Jim’s interest in pioneers peeked as a child due to 3 old pioneer cemeteries near his home and his fascination of how land was transferred back in the day to now. Jim is also President of Mount Zion Historical Society.

Shippen Township

Shippen Township will be closed on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. 

 Monday’s refuse pick-up will be on Tuesday. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday’s refuse collections will remain the same.

Janet L. "Jan" Hampton


Janet L. "Jan" Hampton, 66, of 79 Turkeyfoot Drive, Emporium, PA died peacefully at her residence, surrounded by her family on Tuesday (May 16, 2017) afternoon. She was born May 9, 1951 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late George and Celine Gerber Singer. On February 7, 1970 in Emporium, PA she married David "Frog" Hampton, who survives. Jan spent her entire life in her beloved home town of Emporium. She graduated from CCHS in 1969. 
 She was married to her one and only love, her high school sweetheart, for over 47 years. 

 She had a deep love of family, crafting, singing, and teaching kids about nature. She worked for the Cameron County School District as a teacher’s aide for 23 years. She retired in 2016 after working 18 years as the Cameron County Conservation District manager. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served on the Board of Christian Education. She served on the Cameron County Fair Board, the Cameron County School Board, Sylvan Heritage Council, the Garden Club, Volleyball coach, Drama Club advisor, PA Envirothon, Eastern Star, Girl Scouts, CCOYA, children’s choir director, and Headwaters RC&D council. She was a substitute teacher at St. Mark’s daycare and enjoyed helping at the Cameron County Family Center events. She loved being an announcer for the home track meets, selling tickets at the football games and running the clock for the volleyball. Hometown Mentors recently awarded her the “You Make a Difference” award for her lifelong work in Cameron County. She was known for her random acts of kindness, her infections laugh, and for making people smile. 

She is survived by her husband David "Frog" Hampton and one daughter, Joy Hampton Coffey and husband Eric, DuBois; two grandchildren Jenna Marie Coffey & Jarod Hampton Coffey; brother, Michael (Marcella) Singer, Emporium; sister, Susie Singer, Johnsonburg; brother, George (Peach) Singer, Newton, NC; brother, Jim (Debbie) Singer, Emporium; brother, Bob (Pam) Singer, Hollidaysburg; 

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Celine Gerber Singer and one brother, Clifford Singer, 

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 East 4th St., Emporium, PA on Saturday from 10:00 -11:30 AM followed by a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA at 12:00 PM with Rev. Robert Seiders

Robert Seiders, 78 of Sinnamahoning passed away, while surrounded by his family, at his residence on Sunday morning (May 14, 2017). 

He was born November 8, 1938 in Lancaster, PA a son of the late Robert and Martha Bixler Seiders. He was married to Carole Brown Seiders. Bob served with the US Army and was a member of the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen Club, May Hollow Sportsmen Club, American Legion, Christabelle Club (K OF C), Cameron County Vets Club and a life member (1961) of Loyal Order of Moose. 

He is survived by his wife Carole Seiders, children Angelia Puccio (Rod McCaslin), Frank Puccio (Tami), Lori Heatley (Bruce), Michelle Cryer, Sharon Fowler, several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Elaine Givens (Paul) and Amanda Pennypacker (Warren).

 He was preceded in death by parents Robert and Martha Bixler Seiders and a sister Janet Helt. 

Visitation will be Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 3:00-4:00 PM. 

The American Legion will hold Memorial Service at 4:00 PM followed by a military honors by Cameron County Memorial Detail. 

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Cameron Unit, P.O. Box 62, 135 W. Fourth St., Emporium, PA 15834

George C. Sowers


George C. Sowers, 80, of 13355 Route 120, Emporium, PA died at UPMC-Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, PA on Thursday (May 11, 2017) evening. He was born October 28, 1936 in Spring Mount, PA a son of the late Warren and Hazel Danekar Sowers. On August 29, 1964 in Spring Mount, PA he married Diane Berry, who survives. George worked for the Cameron County School District as a maintenance supervisor for many years. He and his wife Diane were foster parents for over 30 years. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. George enjoyed playing guitar and tinkering with his many tractors. He had a great love for God. 

He is survived by his wife Diane Sowers, son, George T. "Ted" (Penny) Sowers, Emporium; daughter, Joy (Dennis) McKimm, Emporium; daughter, Karen (Keith) LaBrozzi, Lufkin, TX; daughter, Peggy (Gary) Heckman, Emporium; daughter, Andi (Martin Lyon) Sowers, Emporium; son, Steve (Danielle) Sowers, Howard, PA; thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, brother, Robert (Eleanor) Sowers, Zieglersville, PA and a sister, Betty (George) Shaner, Fagleysville, PA.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Hazel Danekar Sowers; a grandson, Keith Edward LaBrozzi; two sisters, Delores VanEvery & Patricia Lick;
 two brothers, John & Warren Sowers,

 A Memorial Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (May 15, 2017) at 6:00 PM with Rev. James Eastman, officiating. 

Visitation will be one hour prior to the Service.

Spaghetti Dinner @ Rod & Gun Club

The Cameron county Bucktail Rod and Gun Club will hold a FREE spaghetti dinner and gun shoot on May 20th, 2017 At our club on Sizer Run from 1pm to 3pm.

 If the member brings a guest we are requesting a small donation for the guest. Two shoots will be held at 2pm and 3pm. Shoot number one will be a 22 card 50 yard off hand shoot, $3 a shot, winner takes half of the money. NO TARGET GUNS ALLOWED. shoot number two will be with a deer rifle, 100 yards off the bench, 5 shots for $5, and highest score wins half of the money.

Bruno Selected as Mayor of the Year Award

Emporium Borough, Mayor Bruno Carnovale was unanimously selected by the Pennsylvania Mayor's Association as "Mayor of the Year" for 2017.

Pittsburgh Marathon Complete!


Emporium resident Eugenia Clark thought said she never thought she would be able to run more than 3 miles, yet today she finished the Pittsburgh Marathon! Eugenia said the ' last 2 miles were painful and endless' but she made it to the finish line.
 Congratulations on your perseverance and a great run!

Fishing @ First Fork

Good news for anglers: First Fork Sinnemahoning will be stocked with trout in the park area on 
May 4, 2017.
 Bring the family and spend the day in the park. Pack a bag lunch and watch the stocking, or bring your gear and try your luck catching dinner. 

The Wildlife Center is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm.

Rotary New


Rotarian, Ken Straub, introduced his wife, Cathy Straub, as the speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting May 2nd. Cathy presented a slide show presentation of various birds and wildlife they saw on their recent trip to Florida and Hilton Head Island. Cathy also had some film of wildlife from Cameron County such as a mother bear with 4 cubs, a bobcat, raccoon, elk, deer and various birds.

Pork & Cork Scholarship Fundraiser

We are excited to announce The Sylvan Heritage Council's annual Pork & Cork Scholarship Fundraiser will again be held at the Andrews Farm June 17th from 5pm-9pm. Tickets will be available after April 1st. Tickets will be limited so plan to get your tickets early! Ask any SHC member, Dick Lewis, Cindy Ramsey, Michelle Clark, Chrissy Slusarick, Lori Reed, Reuben Solveson, Karen Jaing, Jessica Herzing to name a few. Last year's event was a HUGE success and a great time was had by all!



Calling all our local wine & beer makers! We are adding a new award category this year, doubling your chances to win SHC's Pork & Cork "Best Wine" and "Best Beer". We will have categories of People's Choice and Best in Show and would love to showcase your home crafted brews! You'll receive a free event ticket for you and a guest plus a table to serve from, along with ice. We only need you to provide your homemade libations as well as someone to pour. Message us with any questions or with your commitment as soon as possible!

Elsie M. Heagy

Elsie M. Heagy, 82, of 203 S. Broad St., Emporium, PA died at Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, PA on Saturday (April 29, 2017) morning. She was born April 19, 1935 in Reynoldsville, PA a daughter of the late Edward and Blanche Baun Huntington. On August 1, 1964 in Emporium she married the late Earl Heagy. Elsie retired from Cameron Manufacturing where she worked for many years. She continued working, after her retirement, at the Cabin Kitchen. 
She loved her pets "Junior" and "Chopper" 

Survived by Daughter, Kaye Whitley, Lutz, FL; and two sons, John (Bambi) Teates, Emporium and Michael (Lori) Heagy, Brookville; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, three brothers, Bill (Jane) Huntington, Sykesville; Henry (Carol) Schwab, Reynoldsville, Harry Schwab, Reynoldsville; three sister, Joyce (Larry) Miller, Brookville, Margaret Horning and Mary Lou McAulay both from Emporium.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Blanche Baun Huntington, husband, Earl Heagy who died March 2, 1998, three brothers, Ron & George Huntington & Charles in infancy, 

There will be No Visitation. 
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service will be held at Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (May 6, 2017) at 4:00 PM with Rev. James Eastman, Pastor, Deeper Waters Ministries, officiating. Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Evelyn A. Strahl


Evelyn A. Strahl, 87, of 10243 Route 120, Emporium, PA formerly of 2107 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA Sunday afternoon (April 30, 2017). She was born March 11, 1930 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late Everal and Edna Peasley Smith. She married the late Robert Strahl.
Mrs. Strahl graduated from Emporium High School. She worked at various places in Emporium including Sylvania.

 She is survived by daughter, Terri Cunningham, son, Kurt Strahl and his wife Carolann, son, Greg Strahl, son, Brad Strahl and his wife Nancy, son, Colin Strahl, daughter, Kathy Osti and her husband Donny,all of Emporium; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents Everal and Edna Peasley Smith, husband, Robert Strahl who died July 11, 2010, and a grandson, Cyle Strahl.

 There will be No Visitation.
 Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service to be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Wednesday (May 3, 2017) at 12:00 PM with Father Matthew Ryan, Rector, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, officiating.

 Burial will be in the Rich Valley Cemetery, Emporium, PA
