Military Tribute Window

The Sylvan Heritage Council's Military tribute window is back, this time in one of the windows at the Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union.

Because this has been an ongoing display for several years, many of the photos are very faded and we are pretty sure that some of those on display are no longer in active duty. If you have a photo you would like us to put in the window, please feel free to drop it off in the mailbox at my house at 110 East Fifth Street or contact me at 814-594-3260 (or here on FB) or Cindy Ramsey at 814-486-1870 if you have any questions or concerns.

Our goal is to honor all active duty members of the military originally from Cameron County with this window.

 Thank you!

Little Museum Makes Top 10 To Visit This Summer

Little Museum in Sterling Run has made the top 10 seasonal museums to visit this summer. Jim Cheney a writer from Uncover PA writes, “ I’ve visited a lot of historical society museums in Pennsylvania, some of which are seasonal and some of which are open year round. However, none blew me away as much as The Little Museum in Cameron County.”

The items inside the Little Museum that attracted Cheney’s attention included Sylvania artifacts and person items from General Joseph McNarney. “I’ve traveled a lot around Pennsylvania over the last year and have been to some rather obscure destinations. However, I think The Little Museum has to be one of the most off-the-beaten-path places I’ve visited. What it shows is that fantastic things can come in small, out of the way packages,” continued Cheney.

This summer The Little Museum will host monthly activities. Saturday June 6 Theresa Genaux and Robin Kuleck from The Little Red Barn Farm will bring live alpacas and demonstrate spinning. July focuses on the Coke Oven rehabilitation project and August features a Night at the Museum with tours by the Cameron County Historical Society board members.

The Little Museum is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 1-4pm until the middle of October.

– The PA Wilds Artisan Trail will be holding free “Make the Brand Work for You” workshops

Free workshops held for artisans, entrepreneurs looking to join the PA Wilds Artisan Trail, use “Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds” brand –

The PA Wilds Artisan Trail will be holding free “Make the Brand Work for You” workshops across the Pennsylvania Wilds region this summer for small batch producers, independent retailers, artisans and other creative entrepreneurs looking to learn more about joining the Artisan Trail and using the “Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds” brand and networks to grow their operations.

Workshops are being scheduled for the 12 ½ counties that comprise the Pennsylvania Wilds region. Current offerings are listed at the bottom of this press release. The workshops and Q&A run one hour, with refreshments provided. Workshops will provide background about the Artisan Trail program, benefits to joining, costs and the process for applying to the juried program.

Since its inception in 2006, the Pennsylvania Wilds Artisan Trail has proven to raise the visibility and profitability of artisans and arts-related businesses in the PA Wilds by increasing sales of high-quality products made by local artisans and traffic to local galleries and retail shops.

The Artisan Trail has recently gone through several expansions allowing new types of businesses to join. On major new development is that the Trail is now inviting small batch craft ag and food producers to join the Trail and use the ‘Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds’ brand.

“We’d love to see the ‘Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds’ stamp on our region’s syrups, jellies, leek dips and other small batch products that reflect our rural traditions,” said Tataboline Enos, Executive Director of the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, the regional non-profit that operates the Artisan Trail program.

“We’ve tried to keep the program very affordable, from $25 a year for our smallest artisan producers to $150 for our larger ones. We do this because we are working to build our regional brand and we know no one can influence it the way our artisans and creative entrepreneurs can. The Artisan Trail is working to grow this cottage industry. We have so much talent in this region, it is incredible.”

To date, more than 150 artisans and retailers across the region participate in the PA Wilds Artisan Trail. Organizers hope to double that over the next few years. PA DCED, PA DCNR, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Stackpole-Hall Foundation have all made grant investments in the program.

Cameron County High School Student Receives Full Scholarship to Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week

Cameron County High School Student Receives Full Scholarship to Pennsylvania
 Free Enterprise Week

Cory Clinger, son of Chris and Lisa Clinger from Emporium and a junior at Cameron County High School has been granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week on the campus of Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. PFEW is a weeklong economic education program that offers students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the way the free market functions.

Clinger was selected based on his motivation to learn demonstrated through an essay he submitted. Clinger scholarship covers all program costs excluding a registration fee and transportation.

During the week, student “companies” simulate the actual operation of their own businesses for the equivalent of three years. Business volunteers serve as “Company Advisors” who mentor the students as they face many of the same decisions real executives confront. The companies compete against each other in the areas of management skill, return on net assets, a marketing and advertising campaign, and a presentation to stockholders. Company Advisors do not make decisions for their team, but suggest available options and share their own experiences and challenges. Scholarship winners learn the value of teamwork, cooperation and leadership, plus spend a week living on a college campus.

Dozens of world-class speakers present seminars and discussions covering topics like the relationships of business with labor, government and consumers. The students also hear talks about business ethics, management and leadership skills, the economic system future, the global marketplace, money and banking, business operations, careers in business, marketable skills and much more.

Totally funded, taught and staffed by the Pennsylvania business community, PFEW is supported by seven manufacturer’s associations, more than 100 chamber of commerce and more than 800 companies. Now in its thirty seventh year of operation, PFEW’s governing body is the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, a 501 © (3) non-profit organization. For more information, please contact the foundation at (814) 833-9576 or visit www.pfew.org.
