Beer delivery becoming available in PA - WJAC WJACTV.com - Top Stories

Updated: Tuesday, December 30 2014, 01:51 PM EST Reported by: Lauren Hensley STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --

Beer-to-go and delivered straight to your door. It’s a major change coming to the Commonwealth. Food retailers will be allowed to deliver as much as a 12-pack to your home. The Liqour Control Board has recently made this ruling, but only a few businesses have applied for the license.

Business owners think allowing beer delivery could increase sales for those restaurants that specialize in-home delivery, but a concern business owners have in State College, is making sure that beer is going to someone of legal drinking age. Pennsylvania has some of the strictest alcohol regulations in the country, but a recent opinion issued by the state Liqour Control Board is loosening up those regulations. “It is interesting, a lot of things have been changing with PA lately,” said David Krauth, owner of Rotelli Restaurant. “That hasn’t been true for 100 years.” Recently, select grocery stores have made beer and wine available. Now, grocery stores, pizza shops and other outlets that serve food and beer can also deliver up to two six-packs to your front door.

According to the LCB, only a few businesses across the state have applied for the Transporter for Hire license. None in Centre County. Krauth said he is not going to apply for the license because there is too much liability in making sure the beer gets to the right hands. “I think what you are dealing with, with a liquor license is liability issues, especially delivering to people’s homes and especialy in Centre County when you are dealing with so many college students and underages,” said Krauth. “It is going to be interesting to see if people take advantage of it or not.”

The LCB said customers ordering beer must pay by credit card or debit card over the phone, rather than handing cash to the delivery driver. The name on the card must match up to the name on the ID, and if someone underage gets beer, it’s the business’ responsibility. It costs $700 to file for the license. Wine and liquor still aren’t allowed for home delivery.

EMPORIUM, Pa. – The Emporium state police fire marshal is still looking
into what caused a fire early Tuesday morning that caused four
apartments to be evacuated and sent two people to the hospital.

The fire marshal told 6 News this is all a result of a fire that broke
out at a 4th Avenue apartment building.

Investigators said they believe it started in one of the tenant’s
bedrooms when he wasn’t home.

The tenant came home shortly after, saw the fire, and tried to put it
out.

According to the fire marshal, the tenant said when he couldn’t douse
the blaze, he alerted the people who live in the other three apartments
and got them out safely.

In the process, the tenant who discovered the fire ended up being burned
so badly that he had to be flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh.

The fire marshal said one of the firefighters fell through a staircase
and had to be taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening
injuries.

The fire left the building unlivable, at least for the time being.

Investigators are trying to figure out what started it all.

“It’s going to be left undetermined in nature until I have a chance to
speak with the tenant on what he saw and what all he did,” said fire
marshal Nicholas Loffredo. “’Cause I can see where it looks like he
moved the mattress like the bed may have been on fire.”

There is currently no word on the conditions of the injured tenant or
firefighter.

EMPORIUM, Pa. – A local high school marching band is getting the chance
to fly thousands of miles to take part in a parade that commemorates a
major piece of American history.

The Cameron County High School marching band was chosen to represent the
entire state of Pennsylvania in Hawaii for the annual Pearl Harbor Day
parade.

The band members said it’s an honor to represent Pennsylvania in Hawaii.

They found out they were chosen a year-and-a-half ago, and since the
announcement, the band and a large part of the community have been
working tirelessly to make the trip a reality.

“I’m just really proud of our band,” said senior drum major Kate
Caldwell. “I can’t believe we’ve waved this far.”

It’s pride shared by all 56 band members, the band director and the
community.

“I could not be prouder of the group,” said band director Daniel
Sensenig. “Just the kids that we have now and all the students that have
come before, to give us this reputation, that somebody from somewhere
saw our band and thought that highly of us to recommend us to the
Marines to be the official representatives. It’s just mind-blowing.”

The song list consists of a mix of songs that honor veterans, and also a
joint tribute of “God Bless America” feature 1,000 musicians from other
bands throughout the country – a medley of gratitude for service.

“It’s a way to say ‘Thank you’ through music,” said Sensenig.

It’s also the first time this band has done something like this.

“I mean, this is like the biggest stage most of us will ever perform
on,” said junior drum major Vinny Olivett. “I can’t wait to perform.

A performance that wasn’t cheap.

The trip costs $95,000, an opportunity made possible by some of the same
veterans the parade will honor – The Cameron County Veterans pitched in
$5,000.

“We’re pretty proud of the fact that Emporium is representing
Pennsylvania, and we have gotten a lot of other donations from other
legions and VFW’s within the state to help out with this too,” said Bob
Foster, secretary/treasurer of the Cameron County Veterans Club. “I
don’t know. It doesn’t even feel like it’s real yet.”

The band has a busy scheduled ahead.

There will be another practice Wednesday night, Thursday night, and then
they will take a six-hour bus ride to Newark Airport, then a 13-hour
flight to Hawaii.

They will perform on Pearl Harbor Day, and the next day before making
the trek back to Emporium.

Holiday House Tour 2014

Cameron County Holiday House Tour 2014 features newcomers to the event. The residents of the four properties in Emporium have never opened their doors as part of the tour and they range from large Victorians to small family homes and even a duplex.

The tour begins Friday December 12 and lasts 2 hours starting at 6pm. A limited number of tickets are available at $10.00 each and can be purchased at Susan’s Beauty Emporium, Barbara Moscato Memorial Library or the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office. The ticket also gives you discounts at various restaurants for dinner before or after the tour.

The Housler family will open the kitchen of their home on West Fifth Street while the Solak’s will give you a glimpse of how you can fill a duplex in time for the Christmas season. Karen on Poplar Street will also offer refreshments and a glimpse inside a bungalow, while the Thwing’s on Fourth Street open the yellow door of their recently purchased Victorian.
