Pistol Shoot Class Enrollment


The Bucktail Rod and Gun will hold a pistol class Wednesday April 9th from 6-9pm.
The cost will be $25.00 and it is open to male and females.

Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous



The 15th annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous continues thru this Saturday, March 1st.  This year the carvers are in downtown Ridgway and carving demonstrations begin daily.  The event is free and open to the public. On Friday, carving begins at 9 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m.
On Saturday, carving continues throughout the day and the auction will begin at noon.
Wood carvings have been  on sale throughout the week at the carvers' booths. 
If you haven't had a chance to visit this fabulous local event, you will be delighted at the artful carvings available!

Robert A. Floyd

Robert A. Floyd, Sr., 89, of 107 Floyd Rd., Sinnemahoning, PA formerly of Glen Burnie, MD & Renovo, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Saturday (February 22, 2014) night.
He was born August 9, 1924 in Renovo, PA a son of the late John and Sarah Barr Floyd.
He married the late Jean A. Weaver Floyd.

 Mr. Floyd graduated from Renovo High School. He served with the US Navy during WW II onboard the Submarine USS Icefish 367 where he received a Navy Good Conduct Medal!, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal (w/ 4 bronze star appurtenances), Combat Action Ribbon, Discharge Button, and Honorable Service Lapel Pin (Ruptured Duck), a submarine combat insignia (with gold star), Philippine Liberation Medal (w/1 bronze star appurtenances) and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation Badge (Navy). He retired from the US postal Service where he had worked for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Renovo, the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW, Emporium, and the Submarine Vets. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports and watching wildlife around his farm.

Elk Regional Hospital


The Elk Regional Hospital is among the four area health centers that will undergo a name change.

DuBOIS – Thomas Gasbarre, board chairman, announced Friday that in order to publicly solidify its network of services, Penn Highlands Healthcare will change the names and logos of its four hospitals to reflect the Penn Highlands brand.

 The four campuses will be known as Penn Highlands Brookville, Penn Highlands Clearfield, Penn Highlands DuBois and Penn Highlands Elk. Accompanying each new hospital name will be the logo utilized by the parent organization, Penn Highlands Healthcare

Learn to Cross-country Ski at Parker Dam State Park




Feb. 22. Held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon. 
 You can learn how to enjoy this healthy winter sport with the whole family.
Come learn why the cross-country skis work the way that they do, how to get strapped onto the proper-sized equipment, and then head outside to practice turns, falling down, how to get back up, and various helpful techniques to get you started. We can provide equipment (limited-number and sizes) to both adults and children. Please dress appropriately for being active outdoors in the winter. Meet in the Environmental Education Classroom.

Lowell S. “Hank” Wheeler



Lowell S. “Hank” Wheeler of Red Hill, Pa., formerly of West Creek Road, Emporium, passed away Monday, February 17, 2014 in Life Quest Nursing Home, Quakertown, Pa. following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 11, 1923 in Austin, PA, the son of the late Henry L. and Della M. Gratton Wheeler. On August 5, 1946 he married Rita Dill who passed away on August 30, 2007.

A resident of Cameron County almost his entire life, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Arcana Lodge #580 and belonged to Operating Engineers Local 66.
 He was a WWII US Army veteran having served from February 1943 to December 1945. He enlisted in the 17th Airborne Division, Company “F”, 193rd Regiment and was discharged from Company “G”, 194th Glider Infantry Regiment. Hank was a very proud WWII veteran and his family thanks him for his service to our country.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Roger (Ginny) Johnson of East Greenville; six grandchildren: Mrs. Shawn (Missy) Llewellyn, Mrs. Jason (Julie) Barrett, Mrs. Wes (Nikki) Lorhman, and Kyle (Kris) Wheeler, all of Bradford, Brian (Theresa) Johnson of Wescosville, and Mrs. Christian (Robbi) Giuliano of Downingtown; 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert Wheeler, a daughter-in-law, Mary Wheeler, and two sisters, Thora Dill and Cleo Austin.
Visitations with video tribute will be held Friday, February 21, 2014 from 4-6 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

Funeral and Committal Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Christine Groeger, officiating. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Cameron County Vets Club, 427 East Third Street, Emporium, PA 15834.

She is very friendly towards all people and has a lot of energy and loves to run and play. She knows how to play fetch and knows a few tricks. Listen wells to commands. She isn't good around cats, she only wants to chase them and play with them and because of her size a cat never once anything to do with her. She is house broken.

Catherine M. Short

Catherine M. Short, 95, of 112 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA formerly of 520 Beech Ave., Patton, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Monday (February 10, 2014) morning.
She was born February 13, 1918 in Hastings, PA a daughter of the late Jacob and Irene Yeager Strasser.

 Her first husband was Henry Lallemand. After his death she married the late Paul J. Short. She was the last surviving member of nine children. Kate as she was known by many friends and neighbors was one who loved family and friends. Kate worked at the Ebensburg Center and with her husband Paul at All Service Company in Patton. She was also a personal care giver for several individuals in the Patton Area. For Kate sitting on the porch with a good cup of coffee, visiting with friends and family was a precious treasure.

William J. "Big G" Grimone



William J. "Big G" Grimone, 79, of 72 Erie Ave, Apt 106, St. Marys, PA formerly of Emporium died at Christ the King Manor, DuBois, PA Monday (February 10, 2014) morning.
He was born January 4, 1935 in Emporium, PA a son of the late Leo and Ida Razey Grimone.
On April 7, 1956 in St. Mark Catholic Church, Emporium he married Margaret Kinsler Grimone, who survives.
Mr. Grimone graduated from Emporium High School, in the class of 1954. He was well known to many simply as Big "G" , a reference to his beloved Big G Department Store, founded by his father Leo Grimone and owned and operated by Bill and his wife Margaret from 1964 to its closing in 1996. Bill was happiest when he was with his beloved wife and family. He was a member of Queen of the World Church and had been a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium. He had served as the president for St. Mark Catholic Cemetery in Emporium for over 44 years.

Carol M. Parisi



Carol M. Parisi, 69, of 501 Townview Rd., St. Marys, PA formerly of Emporium died at her residence early Sunday  (February 9, 2014) morning. She was born May 23, 1944 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late Floyd Wickett and Ann Unick.

Carol worked at Walmart for many years where she enjoyed meeting new people and seeing and socializing with her coworkers. Carol's grandchildren who held a special place in her heart, were the joy of her life along with her many “forever friends.”

Robert J. “Jim" Winston

Robert J. “Jim" Winston, 80, of 55 Driftwood Ave., Driftwood, PA
died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Saturday (February 8, 2014) morning.

He was born May 12, 1933 in Hanover, PA a son of the late Hubert and Ruth Roberts Winston.
On June 18, 1955 in Enola, PA he married Izola "Terry" McIsaac Winston, who survives.
Mr. Winston graduated from Pennbrook High School and attended Niagara County Community College and the University of Buffalo. He served with the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from Durez Plastics in North Tonawanda, NY where he was a supervisor for many years. He had served many years as secretary/treasurer of the Buffalo Welsh Society. Years ago Jim was a member of the Elks, Moose, and the American Legion. He was a member of the Sinnamahoning United Methodist Church and the Driftwood Lodge #532 F. and A. M.

38 schools at Y’ville HS for District Band - TimesObserver.com

The CCHS Band was represented by four talented students at this years northwestern Pennsylvania  District Band competition  in Youngsville Pa.  Katie Caldwell,  Marissa Corinne Umble,
 Genna Barr and Vinny Olivett
were among the 160 band students from 38 schools across northwestern Pennsylvania. The 38 schools are from Intermediate Unit Five, which encompasses Crawford, Erie, and Warren counties; and IU Nine, which is composed of Cameron, Elk, McKean, and Potter counties. A fabulous concert was held last night ending this part of the event.  All four students did a wonderful job performing !   

 In addition to playing at the public concert last evening  at 7:30 p.m., the students auditioned for a seat at Regional Band which will be held in Leechburg on March 13-15.  Lets give a extra shout out to  Genna Barr, Marissa Umble, and Katie Caldwell will be moving on to regionals. Congratulations to all !!!!

Patsy L. Morton

Patsy L. Morton, 82, of 3009 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium, PA formerly of Sinnamahoning died at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport on Sunday (December 22, 2013) night.
She was born September 26, 1931 in Kittaning, PA a daughter of the late William and Goldie Learner Flanders.
On February 21, 1972 in St. Johns Lutheran Church, Emporium she married Ronald Morton, who survives.
Mrs. Morton graduated from Kittaning High School in the class of 1948. Patsy moved to Cameron County in 1951 and was a rural mail carrier for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Emporium and Smethport where she was a 50 year Gold Star Member. Patsy loved hunting and fishing especially the fishing trips to Canada.

Louise C. PAYNE, 61, of Emporium, PA, formerly of Depew, NY and Genesee, PA, died Saturday, February 1, 2014 in her home. 

Born March 7, 1952, in Coudersport, PA, she was the daughter of Myron T. and Lillian Hulse Graves. 

A graduate of Northern Potter High School, she was employed by Galeton Production, Cooper Slide in Genesee, Encon Safety Products in Coudersport, and Guy and Mary Felt Manor in Emporium. 

Surviving are:  two sons, Christopher M. (Kari) Payne of Covington, PA and Chad E. Payne of Emporium;  three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nathan, and Hanna;  five brothers, Charles (Charlotte) Sutton of Oswayo, PA, Byron (Marie) Sutton of Eldred, PA, Lowell (Bonnie) Graves of Genesee, PA, Lynn (Judy) Graves of Covington, PA, and Leon (Debbie) Graves of Middlebury Center, PA;  three sisters, Maude (James) Goodenough of Gold PA, Linda (Roy) Thomison of Blossburg, PA, and Lucille Copp of Emporium, PA;  and nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Leo J. Graves;  and a sister, Dorothy J. Nelson. 

Friends may call at the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 10:00 –11:00 AM, with a Memorial Service following at 11:00 AM.  Rev. Paul M. Karges will officiate.
