Retailers: Do You Know What Drug Users Want From Your Store?

Retailers:  Do You Know What Drug Users Want From Your Store?
Retailers in Cameron County have contacted the chamber of commerce with questions regarding items that those using illegal drugs may purchase or steal to aide them in the use of the drugs.  “In two cases, the retailers have noticed that items are missing from their shelves,”  says executive director Tina Johns Solak.  Those facts have spearheaded a free seminar to be held at the chamber office.
Emporium Police Chief Matt Siple confirms he has heard similar stories about silverware and plumbing fixtures stolen from businesses.  Siple will oversee the meeting with retailers on Tuesday February 4 at 6pm at the chamber office.  “Information on how retailers can prevent theft and establishing a line of communication with the police department regarding suspicious activity is the goal of the meeting,” according to Johns Solak.
Anyone wishing more information is asked to contact either the Emporium Police Department or Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office.

Borough of Driftwood Water Alert

UPDATE:
Water has been restored to the majority of Driftwood Water Company customers. The boil water notice is still in effect (see previous post). The repair of the line will start on Saturday, January 18, 2014. When that is completed, water to the residents that are without, will be restored. Thank you to all of our customers for being patient during this outage.
------------------------------------------

DRINKING WATER WARNING
BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

Borough of Driftwood May Be At Increased Risk From Microbial Contamination.

We routinely monitor the conditions in the distribution system. On January 12,2014 , we experienced a loss of positive water pressure due to a major water leak. A loss of positive water pressure is a signal of the existence of conditions that could allow contamination t...
o enter the distribution system through back-flow by back-pressure or back-siphonage. As a result, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.

What should I do?

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.
Bring all water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using; or use bottled water. You should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.
Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches.
These symptoms, however, are not caused only by organisms in drinking water, but also by other factors. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from
EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.
What happened? What is being done?

The recent cold weather caused one of our distribution system lines to rupture causing a leak which caused portions of the distribution system and the finished water reservoir to be drained. All customers who have lost positive pressure are advised to boil their water when service is restored and continue until the system can be tested to insure that the water in the effected lines meets drinking water safety standards.

We will inform you when all corrective actions have been completed and when you no longer need to boil your water.
For more information, please contact:

Borough of Driftwood
7129 Third Street
Driftwood PA 15832
at 814-546-2698

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
This notice is being sent to you by
Borough of Driftwood.

MedReturn Box In Emporium

Emporium, PA— Prescription drug abuse is on the rise in Pennsylvania and District Attorney Paul Malizia, with the assistance of Emporium Borough Police Chief Matt Siple, with the cooperation of Emporium Borough Council are doing something about it by installing a secure medicine return box in the Emporium Borough Building that will allow people to dispose of unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medication safely and anonymously. Currently the Pennsylvania State Police offer drug drop-off programs only two times per year. The new Medreturn box will be available during all normal daytime hours to anyone who wishes to dispose of outdated or unused prescription drugs.

"The best way to avoid the risks of prescription drug abuse, especially for children and teenagers, is to safely dispose of medications when they are unused or expired," said Malizia. "These PA MedReturn drop boxes offer the public a safe, accessible, and convenient alternative to keeping prescription drugs that aren't being used in the home where they can get in the wrong hands or be disposed of in landfills or down the drain where they can end up contaminating the water supply.

The PA MedReturn box was awarded to the Cameron County District Attorney's Office through a grant program made possible by a partnership between the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association, the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency as part of Governor Tom Corbett's Healthy PA initiative.

"Governor Corbett's Healthy PA initiative focuses on ensuring safe and appropriate access to prescription medications," said Gary Tennis, Secretary of Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. "Our goal in creating this program is to provide education opportunities for the public, while reducing drug abuse and dependency."

Prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest-growing drug problem and has been classified an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In recent years, district attorneys across Pennsylvania have seen an increase in teenage pill parties, driving under the influence, and a dramatic increase in the use of heroin all related to prescription drug addiction.

The PA MedReturn collection box is located on the first floor of the Emporium Borough Building,. The boxes will accept: prescription and over-the-counter solid medications (tablets and capsules); liquid medications, inhalers, creams ointments, nasal sprays; and pet medications. The boxes will NOT accept: intravenous solutions, injectable and needles.

Additional information about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and to get help for yourself or a loved one is available at www.ddap.pa.gov.
The District Attorney's office would like to thank the Emporium Borough Council and Chief Matt Siple for their cooperation.

GRANT FOR THE PROSPECT PARK PLAYGROUND

HOMETOWN MENTORS, INC. ANNOUNCES CONFIRMATION OF $15,000 GRANT FOR THE PROSPECT PARK PLAYGROUND!!

In October, 2013, HMI (Cathy Ostrum) prepared the grant materials and submitted to a national organization (KABOOM.ORG) headquartered in Washington, DC applying to receive a Community Build Dream Playground for the Prospect Park, Armstrong Memorial, Playground.

We never received anything regarding this grant application, so I called the DC office just 5 minutes ago and she said, "YOU ARE CONFIRMED TO RECEIVE THE $15,000 GRANT."

For some reason we never received the email award notice. She said that happened with one other organization too.

She will resend the notice and then next week we will hear about the online training that will take place showing us next steps and all the particulars.

With this grant we will receive professional help (which we all need haha) in laying out the playground and planning for the build day!! This is such a WONDERFUL opportunity and will see the finish of the equipment purchase for the older kids at Prospect Park. One thing is that we need to have 100 people show up on the build day to complete the installation. We will keep you updated so you can come on out and help us!!

I'll keep you all updated but want to congratulate ALL OF US... for persistence and never giving up on "Keeping the Dream Alive"!!

Tempature Drops Below Zero

The weather is telling us in no uncertain terms, its winter out there !  Around the area, the temperatures have dropped below zero. I can remember a very cold spell back in the '80's, and because of that memory, I just had to look it up.
This link will take you to monthly weather data from January , 1969 - 2008. The year I had in mind was 1984 when the recorded low was - 23 !
Take a look yourself !
