Sinnemahoning Watershed Association Stream Restoration

Sinnemahoning Watershed Association
Stream restoration is a key focus area of the SWA, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Elk County (PA) Conservation District, Potter County Conservation District, and Cameron County Conservation District to help improve the waterways within the Sinnemahoning Watershed.
Stream restoration can be accomplished not only through the planting of native plant species, but also by using tactics like submerging logs and improving livestock crossings. This leads to bank stabilization, which reduces the waterway’s sediment load, including decreasing excess amounts of nitrate and heavy metals. The native plants naturally cool the waterways, leading to less stress for the aquatic species that reside there and encouraging additional species to reside there. There is also the added benefit of improved drinking water source quality and flood control. If you have a stretch of waterway on your property that you would like help restoring, the local conservation districts, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and the SWA are more than happy to provide information.
Several programs will provide trees for restoration projects. In the comments is an article from the USGS about the effects of stream repair that is based on a study in Union County, PA, and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy tree programs available. Photos are from a project along Hunts Run being done by the Cameron County Conservation District that the SWA assisted in the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026
