Cameron County Officials Update on Sheetz Closing
Sheetz is closing its doors in Emporium on September 29. Sheetz district manager notified the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce of the decision the same day employees were told of the closing. Immediately the chamber, Emporium Borough and Cameron County Commissioners began contacting the corporate office. Following two days of discussions it became clear that Sheetz is not interested in staying in the county. Company officials cited a fueling system that must be replaced and the current location which prevents expansion.
The property is owned by Sheetz and the site selector, Allen Stevens, says the fuel tanks will be removed, and the building and land will be offered for sale. Cameron County Commissioner Jessica Herzing expressed to Stevens that the process must be expedited to avoid an eyesore in the middle of downtown Emporium.
When it became clear Sheetz would not be interested in any other property officials from the Chamber, Borough, and County reached out to companies providing similar services. One of those companies is planning a meeting in Emporium later this month. Several existing businesses have offered job interviews to the Sheetz employees and are planning to adjust hours and services.
The three entities working together is the first step in an economic focus that began several months ago with meetings between the chamber and commissioners. The cohesive group plans to continue to look for a Sheetz replacement while working with Sheetz to transition the existing property to new ownership.
