Cameron County Farmers Market
It wouldn’t be a farmers market without our growers so today we would like to welcome back to the market our backyard farmer, Mike Thompson!
Mike is a passionate gardener who has done wonders in the front and backyards of his house in downtown Emporium. It’s a limited space but he has made use of every inch of it, filling it with raised beds of all sizes.
He grows a wide range of vegetables, starting a lot of them from seed in early spring and transplanting them outside when the weather gets warmer.
He will have all of the same deliciously fresh produce he grew last year, including peppers of all 3 colors, several kinds of tomatoes, beets, snap peas, spinach, radish, lettuce, rhubarb, beans, cucumbers, onions and more. At the request of his customers he’s also trying a couple of new vegetables this year; leeks and Dakon white radishes.
For the vegetables requiring more room to grow Mike farms a plot of land outside of town where he grows a selection of acorn, butternut and buttercup squashes, all of which he will be bringing to the market for lucky shoppers to pick up.
As well as supplying the community with wonderful produce Mike also offers a knife sharpening service. Bring your knives to the market (all types of knives are possible) and he will sharpen them for you while you shop. From experience I can tell you that he does a great job, the knives we got back had never been that sharp before!
You can find Mike at our first market of the season selling his green onions and radishes, the very early crops that we can grow this time of year. Mike loves to chat about his gardening so stop by to say hi to him on Saturday, May 11th, 9am to 12pm at the Emporium Town Square. Mike will be accepting FMNP checks again this season.
