CC Farmer's Market Introduces Jim Wendell & Matt Kowalchik

Cameron County Farmers Market

Our new market season is fast approaching (the first market day will be on May 13th) and it is time to start introducing you to this year’s eclectic bunch of talented vendors!

The first vendors to sign up this year are new to the market, and we are super excited to have them join us. You may already know Jim Wendell and Matt Kowalchik as the owners and proprietors of the most upmarket lodging in town, The Hygrade Inn and the newly opened Portage Room where they serve deliciously inventive gourmet meals in their beautifully furnished dining room. Open to guests and locals, this intimate restaurant has bought fine dining and a touch of class to our little, rural town of Emporium! Most of the meals served feature the herbs and leafy greens they grow themselves in their indoor, aquaponics garden.

Jim & Matt’s enthusiasm for these self-contained, highly functional gardens is understandable when you realize how much produce they can harvest from them, enough to not only feed themselves but also supply the restaurant with fresh herbs and vegetables year-round. This summer they will be bringing their fresh herbs to the market to sell to the community so if you are looking for fresh basil (they grow 6 different varieties!), parsley, rosemary, catnip, mint, cilantro, thyme and more, then look no further!

Jim is also a passionate baker and will be bringing a delectable array of home-made creations to the market. Some of you may have been lucky enough to have tasted his soft pretzels with beer cheese dipping sauce already, if not be sure to stop by and try them this summer! He will also be baking his signature macarons of various flavors including orange macarons with white chocolate filling and tie-dye macarons filled with chocolate ganache. Also on offer will be his delicious meringues and brown sugar tuilles dipped in chocolate sauce. If you have a sweet tooth it really doesn’t get any better than this!

Welcome to the market, Jim & Matt, we look forward to tasting all your wonderful, home-made and home-grown goodies this summer!
