Newton Cemetery needs help
Caretakers of Newton Cemetery, located just east of Emporium, continue a fundraising drive to address maintenance needs and planned improvements. The cemetery’s trust fund balance has been declining while the needs are rising.
New mowing equipment is needed and roads must be repaired. The 23-acre cemetery also needs water access and clearance of fallen trees.
Generations of Cameron County residents, including veterans from the Civil War and all subsequent wars, are buried in Newton Cemetery. The property was formerly used as farmland and as a picnic area.
Plots remain available for prices that cover perpetual maintenance and a registered deed.
After contacting the board of directors at Newton Cemetary, this is their reply
Early in 2021 we reached our goal for the fund drive that focused on road repair, tree removal and lawn equipment, and a Thank You letter was put in the Echo. We continue to accept memorials and donations that help to cover the normal maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery, since our income from the sale of burial plots is not enough to cover our expenses.
