Cameron County Farmers Market Introduces Jeff & Laurie Borden

Cameron County Farmers Market

The next farmers market day is fast approaching, and we would like to introduce you to the latest growers to join our vendor list, Jeff and Laurie Borden. Jeff and Laurie recently moved back to CamCo last year and in a very short time have created a beautiful big garden in their back yard. They have big plans and are continually adding exciting new varieties while they are “learning as they grow” their garden.

Jeff grew up in Louisiana and his garden choices are inspired by the spicy tastes of the southern cuisine. Amid the common squash, corn and cabbages you will find more unusual vegetables growing that form parts of his favourite dishes from his childhood such as purple hill peas, okra, tomatillos and a wide variety of different kind of peppers including sugar rush peach peppers, lemon spice jalapeƱos, Cerano peppers and tabasco peppers. You can imagine the delicious sauces and dishes that he makes from this eclectic mix!

Jeff and Laurie will be bringing whatever is ready to pick and eat to the market, like all our growers their garden is weather dependent so it’s always hard to predict exactly what will be ready a week from now! They would also like to start selling salsa kits which will include all the vegetables needed plus a recipe card so you can easily make this delicious, southern-inspired sauce at home yourself. They’re not sure if their peppers will be ready to do this by next weekend but they hope to have this available for markets in the future.

If you fancy trying something new, come and check out Jeff and Laura’s selection of vegetables at the farmers market next Saturday, 10th September at the Emporium Town Square, 9am to 1pm.

We are excited to welcome this adventurous pair of gardeners to our market!
