CC Farmers Market Introduces Mountain View Sheep Farm

Cameron County Farmers Market Introduces Mountain View Sheep Farm

The next vendor we would like to welcome to the farmers market is local farmer and weaver, Bonnie Troemel from Mountain View Sheep Farm.

Bonnie is the proud owner of a small herd of six feisty Shetland sheep, a previously rare breed from the Shetland Isles of Scotland that have been bought back from threatened status by farmers like herself. They are a small and hardy breed that produce very fine wool in many shades of colour, ranging from whites, greys and browns to jet black. And when I say feisty, I mean feisty! Penelope, the boldest of the herd, gave me a few good, hard head butts when I dared to venture into her paddock! She was also the cuddliest of the lot so all was easily forgiven!

Multi-talented Bonnie shears the sheep herself, spins their wool and dyes some of the lighter shades into vibrant colours. She then weaves the yarn into beautiful blankets and shawls, specialising in her self-designed breastfeeding shawl and comfort shawl. She also knits and felts, creating some very unique pieces. As well as Shetland wool she uses beautifully soft merino wool in some of her weaves.

Along with offering a selection of shawls, blankets, felted creations and yarn for sale Bonnie will also be demonstrating her weaving technique at the market on her triangular loom. Stop by to see her in action at our next farmers market on August 13th, 9am to 1pm, at the Emporium Town Square.

 Welcome to the market, Bonnie!
