Owl Saturday and Kayaking Sunday at Sinnemahoning State Park

Visit Sinnemahoning State Park this Saturday, July 23, to learn all about Pennsylvania’s owls, and come back on Sunday, July 24 for a relaxing morning kayak paddle on the George B. Stevenson Reservoir.

This Saturday will feature programs about owls fascinating nocturnal lives for the whole family!

From 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Awesome Owls in the Wildlife Center Classroom. Discover the folklore, natural history and adaptations of owls, mysterious creatures of the night. PowerPoint presentation enhanced by owl mounts, talons, wings and pellets. Intended for adults and children ages 8 and up. No pre-registration required.

In the afternoon from 3:00 – 4:00 PM, families with kids ages 4 to 10 can check out the Art for Kids: Owl Craft at 40 Maples Day Use Area, Pavilion 2. Participants will create an owl puppet to take home while learning about the adaptations that make owls stealthy night-time hunters.

Wrap up the day with the park naturalist for the campground program Nature at Night: Owl Prowl from 8:00 to 9:30 PM. This program is a presentation on the owls that could live in Sinnemahoning State Park, followed by an owl prowl to try to find owls living nearby. Both presentation and walk meet at the campground amphitheater, the presentation will be from 8:00 to 8:30 PM and the walk from 8:30 – 9:30 PM. This program is open to all visitors, even those not staying in the campground. The presentation will feature owl mounts, with a few slides. The walk will be on a forest path about 1 to 2 miles over uneven ground. Sturdy walking shoes and insect repellant recommended.

This Sunday, enjoy a Guided Kayak Nature Tour with a park educator from 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM or from 10:30 AM – 12 PM. Tours depart from the boat launch at the Lake Day Use Area. Take a relaxing paddle out on the lake in search of wildlife and peaceful morning recreation. The park has kayaks, PFDs (life vests) and paddles available to borrow for the program! You may also bring your own boat and gear, though any personal kayaks/canoes must have a current DCNR Launch Permit to be able to participate and all participants must wear a PFD while paddling on the lake.

Registration is required for the paddling program. Participants must be 10 years or older to attend, children must be accompanied by an adult. Prior experience kayaking required. Register at the link below or call the park office.

In the park for a long weekend? On Monday morning, come on leisurely Walk with a Naturalist from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. Meet at the Wildlife Center. The naturalist will point out what she notices along the trail and will answer your nature questions. Walk will be 1 to 2 miles over a level, crushed gravel surface.

The pontoon tours on Sunday, July 24th and Sunday, July 31st have been canceled as we perform some maintenance on our pontoon boat.
