Artist Classes Return to Chamber of Commerce

Artist Classes Return to Chamber of Commerce

Since Covid-19 classes at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center have been kept to a minimum, but that is changing according to executive director Tina Solak. “2022 was kicked off by Alcohol Drug Abuse Services hosting a blanket making class for children and Meera Smoker hosting a senior project paint class.”

On February 12 ADAS will again welcome a photographer to take pictures of children who will then make a frame. March 26 Bonnie Troemel from Mountain View Sheep Farm will teach needle felting.

“The chamber is excited to provide a space for artists to teach and share their unique talents,” Solak continued. The needle felting class is limited to 15 students. Participants are to bring a four-inch egg shaped cookie cutter. A felting needle and all other supplies will be provided.

The cost is $20 and the class is open to all ages. Students will learn basic felting and adding stripes, zig zags and polka dots. Registration is available online on Facebook and Eventbrite or by calling or stopping at the chamber office.

Artists wishing to teach classes are encouraged to contact the chamber to secure a date.
The Chambers phone number is 814-486-4314

Seeds now available for “checkout” at your local library

Stop! Put down that seed catalog and walk away!

Before you order your seeds for spring, check out the new Seed Library at the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library in Emporium. Available now for “checkout”, the library has a variety of vegetable and flower seeds, as well as a few melon varieties. Just pick out your seeds, then use your library card to check out your desired seed pack, just like a regular library book. No need to return these library items, but, if you already harvest and preserve seeds, the library encourages you to donate your non-gmo, non-hybrid and heirloom varieties to help grow the Seed Library each year.

A complete list of 2022 available seeds as well as details on donating are available at https://barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org/seed-library or by stopping by the library located at 27 West 4th Street in Emporium. Also, coming Saturday, March 5, the library will have a great program presented by area Master Gardeners called “Do You Want to Start a Garden This Year? Let Your Excuses Be-Gone!” Look for more details about this program in the coming week.

“We hope local gardeners will take advantage of this great new service the library is offering and help us to grow this into a bigger and better seed collection in the years to come.” Said Librarian Yelena Kisler,

“We’re so excited to share this great resource with our community.” “Seeds are only available in limited quantities, so we encourage those interested to get their desired seeds before we run out,” she said. Quantity of seeds per pack is not guaranteed since this is a free item, minimum needed for pollination is guaranteed. All seeds are non-gmo and heirloom varieties as attested to by the donors.
Details on seed sourcing is available upon request from library staff.

The Bucktail Rod & Gun Club’s Youth Ice Fishing event in memory of Russell E. Rhoades Jr. Has Been Scheduled for February 5th.

Russell passed away December 28 2017 at the young age of 30 years old. He was the Son of Rusty Sr. and Deanna Rhoades of Emporium. He was a 2006 graduate of CCHS and loved hunting and fishing. Russell volunteered his time to help with the previous Youth Ice Fishing events. He had a big heart and always enjoyed seeing young people become more involved in outdoor activities. Fishing can be continued by anyone who wishes to stay. The clubhouse will be open so everyone will have the chance to warn up throughout the day. Hot chocolate, coffee and Hot dogs will be available for all those who participate.

The intention of this event is to introduce youth to ice fishing.
All Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations apply.

The sponsors encourage you to bring your own equipment, however there will be volunteers on hand to provide basic instruction and allowing participating youth the opportunity to use their equipment. This event may be cancelled due to unsafe ice conditions or inclement weather.

Please Register for the event by January 30, 2022. If you would like to register a youth or volunteer your time, please contact Taylor Gillette at (814) 562-0421 or via email taylor.ccoya@windstream.net.

Cameron County’s Brown May Have Set D9 Boys Record in Win at Galeton, Pa.

Cameron County’s Brown Explodes for 60; May Have Set D9 Boys Record in Win at Galeton, Pa.

Cameron County’s Hayden Brown scored what could very well be a District 9 record 60 points in the Red Raiders 85-41 win at Galeton in NTL play.

“I was honestly shocked,” Brown said. “A good friend of mine came over and told our coach as we were shooting free throws that I was at 56, and I had the potential to get the (school record). I thought to myself, that is honestly crazy.”

Brown got off to a great start scoring 16 first-quarter points to help the Red Raiders to a 22-7 lead at the end of eight minutes.

“I was told I started the game with the first 14 or 16 points,” Brown said. “At that point, I thought ‘good start’. But, I have had games like that before and it kind of fizzled out.”

He then added seven more points in the second half o give him 23 at halftime.

That was just a prelude to a massive second half that saw Brown double his point total by scoring 23 third-quarter to give him 46 on the night. He then added 14 more in the fourth quarter while going 8 of 8 from the free-throw line in the frame.

“Coming into the third quarter, about halfway through, I realized I was really starting to score,” Brown said. “I thought for sure I would just start missing shots.”

The 60 points topped the previous Cameron County record of 56 scored in 1999 by Shane Goss.
