According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an opioid overdose can occur in many ways:
 • Overdose of an illicit opioid drug such as heroin or morphine.

• Accidentally taking an extra dose, or deliberately misusing a prescription opioid as part of medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

 • Mixing opioids and other medications (including over-the-counter) with alcohol; or mixing opioids with anxiety treatment medications, including derivatives of benzodiazepines, such as Xanax or Valium.

• Using an opioid-based pain medication either not as prescribed or prescribed for someone else (an especially dangerous situation for children).
