Military Banner Walk in Emporium

 

Today the Sylvan Heritage Council assisted the Emporium borough crew in replacing 24 military banners throughout the Emporium borough. We are so happy the banners were in before this holiday weekend and cannot thank the borough crew enough for their assistance with this community project.

As we did earlier this year, on this beautiful 4th of July weekend, the Sylvan Heritage Council invites you to take a walk or a drive around Emporium and view our 178 military banners! This is just one of the many that memorializes a veteran who paid the ultimate price for his country. Take a look for the others and, when you find them, say a humble thank you. The banners stretch from the west to east end bridges and from Second to Sixth Streets. On this day and every day, Cameron County is military proud and strong!

In addition to the fireworks that will be held in Emporium at dusk on Saturday, July 3, Caldwell's will set off fireworks at their facility. 

The July 3 fireworks will take place at the CC High School. A night swim is also planned at the High School before the fireworks from 7 - 9 pm. $2.00 per person

-As usual, I will be putting up some yellow tape around the area we are setting them off. I do not want anyone near us for fear of someone getting badly hurt. If you come watch, please do so from the grass by the Rails to Trails or along the parking lot fence away from where they are being set off. The further the better. -

Please no parking in the parking lot. Please park somewhere else and walk over with a chair or something so cars don't get damaged and the lights won't distract. -We keep adding to the firework stockpile this year and may potentially not use all of them. We may save some for next year.. I don't want to overstay our welcome and upset all the neighbors. We will see how things go and how quickly we go through them. 

This show wouldn't be nearly as spectacular without the VERY generous donations I received. I'm very thankful to the people who helped make this the best show it can be.

Amazon bringing 600+ acre solar farm to McKean County

I don't know what to think of this. I wonder what the impact will be on our PA Wilds Environment?  Currently Cameron County has resisted public use ATV trails claiming they disrupt the peaceful  environment  we have, but the construction of these solar farms are sure to have some impact.

More than 600 acres in a wooded area of Sergeant Township will be the future home of an Amazon solar farm.

The giant Seattle-based e-commerce company plans a similar, but smaller, project in Potter County, according to a press release issued Wednesday. A map available on the company’s website appears to indicate the solar farm would be in the area of Hebron Township.

In McKean County, planning director Jeremy Morey explained, “This solar farm will be along the Clermont-Wilcox Road in Sergeant Township. The size will be 618 acres of solar panels and construction was to begin later this year, I believe.”

All of the solar panels will not be located in a giant clump on the property, but spread out in smaller parcels.

Morey said the farm will be located “around 11 miles as the crow flies from the airport,” but it is not expected to cause issues for airplanes with glare or reflection. “We were told by the company that typically solar panels do not produce glare, since they want to capture that solar energy and not deflect it.”

These two solar farms are part of a total of 14 renewable energy projects Amazon is undertaking in the U.S., Canada, Finland and Spain “to advance its ambitious goal to power 100% of company activities with renewable energy by 2025 — five years ahead of the original target of 2030,” a press release from the company read.

A spokesperson for Amazon told The Era Thursday how much energy is expected to be produced at the local farms.

“The Potter County project is 30 (megawatts), which when enabled will produce 57,205 (megawatt hour) of energy, and it’s scheduled to come online in 2023,” said Lauren Lynch, head of global sustainability and infrastructure PR for Amazon Web Services. “The McKean County project is 90 MW, which when enabled will produce 175,575 MWh of energy, and it’s scheduled to open in 2023 also.”

One MWh is about the equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 330 homes in one hour.

“The new projects bring Amazon’s total renewable energy investments to date to 10 gigawatts (GW) of electricity production capacity — enough to power 2.5 million U.S. homes,” the press release stated. “Amazon is now the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. and the world.”

The release explained why Amazon was undertaking the projects.

“The latest utility-scale solar and wind projects will supply renewable energy for Amazon’s corporate offices, fulfillment centers, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers that support millions of customers globally,” the release read. “These projects will also help Amazon meet its commitment to produce enough renewable energy to cover the electricity used by all Echo devices in use. These new projects support hundreds of jobs while providing hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in local communities.”

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos was quoted, too, speaking about the importance of renewable energy.

“We’re driving hard to fulfill The Climate Pledge—our commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Our investments in wind and solar energy in the U.S. and around the world send a signal that investing in green technologies is the right thing to do for the planet and citizens — as well as for the long-term success of businesses of all sizes across all industries everywhere,” Bezos said.

Amazon will now have a total of 232 renewable energy projects globally, including 85 utility-scale wind and solar projects and 147 solar rooftops on facilities and stores worldwide.

As for Sergeant Township, the 2000 Census reported 176 residents with a population density of 2.2 people per square mile.

Nearby Olean, N.Y., has several solar farms, including a 17-acre former brownfield site between Interstate 86 and Homer Street called Homeridae. Olean Mayor Bill Aiello said in 2019 that the 11,800 solar panels generated enough electricity to supply 652 typical New York homes with power for a year.

Allegheny National Forest Chosen for Regional Gathering

 

Warren, PA, June 25, 2021 – The Rainbow Family of Living Light has chosen the Allegheny National Forest for a regional gathering. The gathering is taking place in the vicinity of Forest Road 339 on the Marienville Ranger District. The event will coincide with the Fourth of July holiday, and participants have already begun arriving. The forest will experience the highest concentration of participants during the first week of July. The Rainbow Family is a loose-knit group of people from throughout the USA and other countries. Each summer they hold a national gathering to pursue social and spiritual activities and pray for world peace. Since 1972, the event has taken place on a different national forest each year.

 The Rainbow Family chose Carson National Forest in New Mexico as their 2021 national gathering location. National Crowds range from 2,000 to 10,000 visitors. This year there are also simultaneous regional gatherings occurring nationwide. Attendance could reach 1,000 or more participants at the gathering on the Allegheny National Forest. “We understand there may be impacts to our local communities and our forest visitors,” said Rob Fallon, Marienville District Ranger. “We will work with our partners to minimize the effects on our neighbors and the environment. All visitors to the national forest are expected to obey federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and we take the equitable enforcement of these laws seriously.”

 

A resource design criteria for the event will address concerns about health and safety, watershed protection, natural resource protection, and rehabilitation of the event site before the group leaves. The Forest Service activated an incident management team with experience managing these types of events. The team is working in unified command with local authorities to lessen environmental impacts to the site by providing information and enforcing laws.

 

An event of this size can have significant impacts on traffic, communities, local resources, residents, and visitors. Local businesses can expect to see Rainbow Family participants visiting stores and buying food and supplies along routes to the gathering site. Roads on the Allegheny National Forest in Elk County are expected to become congested during the event. Please travel with caution, obey traffic laws, and consider recreating in less visited areas of the forest. The QIDC will be holding the 24th Annual QIDC 100 Mile Yard Sale this year on July 16 and 17, 2021. This event runs from Shawville to Medix Run and From Weedville to Sinnemahoning. There are several small towns along the route. The QIDC will be set up again at Big M's garage in Karthaus. Stop by and say hello. Registration is $10 and begins March 1st. We will end registration for the directory on May 1st. We hope to have the directories printed and distributed by June 1st. Members of the QIDC will be set up at the Quehanna Lodge on April 11th, 18th, and the 25th if you would like to register in person. We will be there from 1 to 3 pm.

Lisa Elaine Tate

 

Lisa Elaine Tate, 51 of Apex, tragically passed away on June 22, 2021.

Lisa was born in Pennsylvania on May 25, 1970 to her mother, Naomi Dill. She grew up there in the township of Sterling Run, where she delighted in the mountain backdrops and playing in the creek by her family home. That's where her love of the outdoors began, and as Lisa would say "I love being out in nature, but I can't seem to make it grow!" Which wasn't entirely true; she proved to be a pretty good gardener in the long run, and she always had a few other projects going besides. Her career in information technology brought her to North Carolina, and when she wasn't hard at work on that, you might find her cooking a fabulous meal for the family just the way her mom taught her to, or taking amazing nature photos, or sewing a dress for her daughter, or working on her next do-it-yourself home-improvement project, or finding a way to help out a friend or family member in need, or planning another trip to be out in nature somewhere she'd never been before. She was never one to sit still for long; she was full of life and energy and love, with a megawatt smile that could light up your heart.

She will be severely missed and always remembered by her husband, Brian Tate; mother, Naomi Dill; son, Justin Mullen; daughter, Abigail Mullen; stepson, Joshua Tate; stepdaughter Emily Tate; siblings, Donna Hepfer, Debbie Jack, Rita Dorton, and Richard Dill; and many extended family members.

Family will receive friends and guests for a celebration of her life at Apex Funeral Home on Monday, June 28, 2021. A visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, then memorial service at 2:00 pm, and burial at Raleigh Memorial Park following after.

Cameron County Car Cruise Revving Up

Cameron County Car Cruise sponsor Reids Auto Sales and Service announcing more details about the car cruise planned for Friday July 2.

 Emporium Food Market is hosting the event starting at 7pm. Car enthusiasts are invited to enjoy food and music starting at 7pm. There is no fee to enter the cruise. Approximately 8:30pm the vehicles will cruise to Emporium Secondaries where they will turn around and head back to Emporium Food Market or the parking lot at Keystone Automatic Technologies. 

 Several local firework enthusiasts are planning to set off a display at the parking lot of Caldwell Corporation which is adjacent to Keystone Automatic Technologies .-30-

FRIENDS OF BALD EAGLE VALLEY TRAIL PLAN 5K WALK/RUN

Lock Haven – John Gradel, Vice President, Friends of Bald Eagle Valley Trail, announced the public is invited to a 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, July 24 th, starting 9:00 am at the Castanea Train Complex, 15 Logan Avenue, Lock Haven, PA. The event is planned to celebrate Castanea Township Community Day festivities at the Castanea Train Station Historical Complex, Fire Hall and Lock Haven Moose Lodge 100. On-site registration begins at 8:30 am. Participants who register by July 5 th receive a free t-shirt featuring the Bald Eagle Valley Trail logo. Gradel noted, “The Bald Eagle Valley Trail is a true gem in our county and we want walkers and runners whether local or out of town to enjoy this prime recreational opportunity. Plus, this organized walk/run is being held in conjunction with the adjacent fire company and Castanea Township.” The trail starts at the Castanea Train Station Historical Complex and ends at the Wayne Township Park, McElhattan. The extension of the trail to the Linnippi Indian Monument in McElhattan and Tiadaghton Elm Access are under construction.

Gradel added, “We want the public to enjoy the outdoors as well as support our event and the trail. The public may choose whether to walk or run in the race. We will have athletic training students from Lock Haven University on hand to assist with basic first aid, if needed. However, the trail is flat and paved.”

Friends of Bald Eagle Valley Trail is a volunteer organization that assists with maintaining and beautifying the trail. Any interested members can email bevtfriends@gmail.com to learn more.

Weekend in the Wilds July 2 and 3

Weekend in the Wilds organizers unveiled a new logo for the event. The paw print created by Art N Ink will be featured on t-shirts sold during the event starting Friday July 2. This year the annual event brings back a car cruise sponsored by Reid’s Auto Sales & Service. The parking lots at Emporium Food Market and Emporium Ace Hardware will feature vehicles, food by Crazy Eyes BBQ, and DJ Smokin Sounds providing the music. According to organizers this is the first public car cruise and show since the Robert Lininger family organized the events more than 10 years ago.

Saturday the day begins at dawn with the Mountaineer Search & Rescue Big Foot Hunt. Licenses for the event can be purchased until 9pm Friday July 2. The $5.00 fee benefits the local organization. More than 50 vendors including artists, non-profits, and businesses open at 9am. They will be set up along East Fourth Street from Broad to Walnut Streets. Because of the increased pedestrian traffic in the vendor area, no parking will be permitted starting at 6am Saturday. North and South Chestnut and Cherry Streets will also be closed Saturday morning. Old Skool will perform at the stage from 11am-3pm. The popular Firequacker Duck Derby will be held at 1pm on Broad Street and at 2:30 pm the Big Foot Awards will be announced. 

Starting at 7pm the gates at the Cameron County High School Football Stadium will open for the fireworks and night swim at the pool complex. Visitors can sit in the bleachers or parking lot to have the best view of the fireworks which will blast off around 9:45pm.-30-logo included in email

Mattie Pauline Galford Holsinger

Mattie Pauline Galford Holsinger, 95, of Pinecrest Manor, 763 Johnsonburg Rd., St. Marys, PA formerly of Emporium, PA died at Pinecrest Manor on Monday morning (June 21, 2021).

She was born January 24, 1926 in Marlinton, West Virginia a daughter of the late Reed and Mary Hamrick Gay. Mrs. Holsinger married her first husband, Dennie Galford, on April 2, 1942. He died January 26, 1976. On January 20, 1978 she married Robert Holsinger who died Nov. 25, 1987.

Mattie worked at Sylvania for 27 years and then at Olivett's Market for 27 years. Mattie was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Frank R. Galford, Emporium; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands Mattie was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Lynn & Stephen Galford; sister, Letta Baker and brother, Sam Gay.

There will be No Visitation. Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Robert E. "Speedy" Lininger

 

Robert E. "Speedy" Lininger, Sr., 73, of 30 Jupiter Road, Emporium, PA went to God at Geisinger Medical Center on Thursday, June 17, 2021.

He was born January 6, 1948 in Renovo, PA, a son of the late Harold G. Lininger and Dessie Scrimshaw Lininger. On July 22, 1972 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Kersey, PA, he married Carol Greenawalt, who survives. Carol and Speedy were happily married for 49 years and were approaching their Golden Anniversary.

Speedy graduated from Cameron County High School. He retired from the railroad as a welder in 1999, which had been his career for many years. He also consulted for the law firm Keller & Goggin out of Philadelphia for several years. He was a member of the Cameron County School Board on which he served several terms. He was an avid car enthusiast (thus “Speedy”). He most enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by a son, Robert “Rob” Lininger, Williamsport, daughter Loretta Lininger, Coudersport; and a son Paul (Amy) Lininger, Emporium; and five grandchildren: Ian, Brooke, Sierra, Jaston and Caroline.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as two brothers Richard and Harold Lininger (infancy).

There will be No Visitation. A Celebration-of-Life Gathering and “cruise-in” will be held at the Woodland Elementary School parking lot - Woodland Ave., Emporium, PA on Saturday, July 10, 2021 from 11:00AM-1:00 PM, with a memorial service at noon. Anyone owning a show automobile is encouraged to bring it, but it’s not necessary.

Burial will be at Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA.

Emporium Senior Center Opens in July

 

Emporium Senior Center To Re Open 

The Emporium Senior Center will be opening for dining in beginning on Monday, July 12th from 12-12:45pm Monday-Friday. 

This is the first step towards a fully open and operational center. It is the hope that if issues arise, they can be quickly remedied, so that activities can be accommodated soon after. Per State Recommendations, masks will still be required in the center while in motion and moderate distancing should be kept. Take outs will still be available until further notice. There will be a short informational meeting on Monday, June 28th at 11:30am with the purpose of going over details. This will also be a time that people can ask clarifying questions and they will be answered to the best of our ability. Those who order a lunch for that day will be able to pick up their lunch directly following the meeting. 

 If you are willing to give 1 hour per week to volunteer, give the center a call with availability or questions. 814-486-3707

Father's Day Weekend programs at the park include Skull Identification, Skull Craft, Bear Movie, and Pontoon Tours. This well-written video follows bears throughout the year, as they eat, sleep, play, and interact with their environment. Pontoon Tour of the Stevenson Dam Join park staff for a fun and informative 1-hour tour, as we cruise the shoreline of the George B. Stevenson Reservoir in search of wildlife. Group size limited. PRE-REGISTRATION is recommended. There is no fee for regular Sunday interpretive pontoon boat tours, but DONATIONS ARE REQUESTED.

Ladies, registration is still open for Women in the Wilds classes. 

 Choose your own adventure – pick just one class or sign up for a full weekend of outdoor recreation and environmental education. This program is being offered for FREE for this year only.
