Cameron County Historical Society Presentation

Cameron County Historical Society Presentation

The presentation and unveiling of a Historical Marker honoring the Sylvania Corporation was very interesting and well attended. If you missed it, stop by the plaque at the Northern Tier Community Action Corporation (NTCAC) building and take a look. The Cameron County Chamber has Sylvania booklets for purchase that were put together by the Cameron County Historical Society .
Photos by Brian Reid and Kent Davis.

The Historical Marker will honor the Sylvania Corporation and its many contributions to Emporium, Cameron County, and the United States throughout its decades-long history in the community.

Historical Society Vice President Susan Hoy presented the history of Sylvania and the people who ran the company and patented many of its products and processes. The contributions of the company and community residents to efforts during World War II were also be highlighted.

The presentation covered the history of the Sylvania Corporation, from its beginning as the Novelty Incandescent Company in 1906 in St. Marys, through its former headquarters present-day use by the Caldwell Corporation.

On several occasions, operations were relocated from Emporium to St. Marys. During the most notable of these occurrences, research and development efforts, which were kept secret from majority stakeholders, continued in Emporium and resulted in the invention of a new product, a radio tube, which would completely change the direction of the company, and the community.

The presentation also touched on some of the people who spearheaded the company’s efforts throughout history, including Josiah Howard, Henry Auchu, Robert Kaye, Guy Felt, George Rishell, and Bernard Erskine.

The company would eventually purchase Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company, becoming the Hygrade Sylvania Corporation, becoming a leader in the radio industry.

Efforts to back the United States government during the second World War are likely the most notable of the company’s achievements. Technologies developed by members of the Emporium community would go on to revolutionize war communications and artillery, and likely helped the allies win the war.

Emporium’s nickname of Girls Town, USA, and the invention of proximity fuses and Lock-In radio tubes will also be discussed during the approximately one-hour long presentation.

From the location of the new Historical Marker, Sylvania’s Emporium factory can be seen. The building was constructed in 1929, and is located behind the NTCAC building, across the Rails-to-Trails.

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the Cameron County Historical Society, and a number of events are planned to celebrate. At the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center in Emporium, a rotating display highlighting different aspects of the community’s history is available for view, along with additional information on upcoming events and contests.

Pic of the Day ~ Catch of the Day!

Cameron County  had rain and grey skies, but that didn't dampen Boden Pearsall's day. Boden caught this beautiful palomino trout near Emporium. Measuring close to 23 inches, it was released back into the stream.

Bonnie S. Miller

Bonnie S. Miller, 52, of Coudersport, lost a short, but courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at UPMC Cole surrounded by her loving family.

Born on April 7, 1969 in Coudersport, she was the daughter of Franklin (Louie) and Myrtle Baker. In October of 2000 she married the love of her life, Will Miller, who survives.

Bonnie attended the Austin Area School and graduated in 1987. In 1990 she enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving her country for twenty years, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant. After spending time at three primary duty stations in Texas, Germany and Maryland, upon her retirement Bonnie and Will moved their family back to Potter County.

Even though she was retired from a full military career, Bonnie couldn’t just sit around. Using the skills she had perfected in the Air Force, she took a job working with the Behavioral Health Department of Potter County Human Services where she worked until illness made it unable for her to continue.

Bonnie enjoyed traveling and made full use of her time overseas by visiting as many medieval castles as possible throughout Europe. She also was known for loving her many animals. Her cats and dogs always knew who had the best snacks and scratches.

Left to cherish her memory with her husband are children, Erin Mae (Mat) Fryer , Claudia Alyse and Dalton Cale, and a granddaughter, Kinsley Mae Sherwood, all of Coudersport. Additionally her mother in Emporium, PA and two brothers, Franklin (Judai) Baker, Anchorage, AK and Joseph (Tammy) Baker, Ridgway, PA. Also surviving is her step-mother, Janice Baker in Keating Summit, PA and her mother-in-law, Carla Miller of Coudersport.

Bonnie was predeceased by her father and her father-in-law, William Miller.

Friends are invited to join her family for a time of remembrance at 5PM with a memorial service starting at 5:30PM on Friday June 4, 2021 at Park United Methodist Church, 15 E. Third St., Coudersport. Flowers are gratefully declined and memorials can be made to The American Cancer Society, 135 W 4th St, Emporium, PA 15834.

Causer, Dush Announce Blight Remediation Grant for Cameron County

HARRISBURG – The Cameron County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has been awarded a grant of $43,573 to address a blighted property in the borough of Emporium, Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) and Sen. Cris Dush (R-25) announced today.

“Blighted buildings are a health and safety concern, as well as a quality of life issue,” Causer said. “I am glad the state is able to step in and help clean up this serious hazard to the community.”

“Downtowns are the hearts of our communities, so it is important to keep them beautiful,” Dush said. “I am pleased to see this grant given to the county IDA to help revitalize Emporium’s main street while keeping it safe.”

The project will include the acquisition and demolition of a former mixed-use structure on the main street of the borough’s commercial district. The commercial component of the structure has been vacant for eight years and the residential area has been vacant for two years. The building is unfit to be rehabilitated and requires an asbestos abatement before it can be properly razed.

The grant was awarded to the IDA by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through its Blight Remediation Program.

Please Leave Newborn Wildlife Alone

Pennsylvania Game Commission
Please leave newborn wildlife alone

Whether in their backyards or high on a mountain, it’s almost certain Pennsylvanians will encounter young wildlife this time of year. While some young animals might appear to be abandoned, usually they are not. Adult animals often leave their young while they forage for food, but they don’t go far and they do return. Wildlife also often relies on a natural defensive tactic called the “hider strategy,” where young animals will remain motionless and “hide” in surrounding cover while adults draw the attention of potential predators or other intruders away from their young. Deer employ this strategy, and deer fawns sometimes are assumed to be abandoned when, in fact, their mothers are nearby. If you spot a deer fawn all alone, please do not disturb it. If you have driven through Emporium in the last month or two, you will have noticed that the traffic light on Main street ( West 4th Street ) and  the Woodland Avenue intersection has been broken. The light is red one way, and blinking yellow the other way. There has been concern about the malfunctioning light and the borough is having a public meeting about this traffic light on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 6:00 pm in the conference room of the Municipal Building located at 421 N. Broad Street. If you have concerns, you should consider going to this meeting. Comments on Facebook are not taken into consideration.

Summer Reading Program

The 2021 Summer Reading Theme is Tails and Tales and the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library has lots of great themed activities planned for this year! The Library will have lots of fun take-home crafts and activities, and a big end-of-program party in August with a special guest performer.

Animals of all kinds roam the lands and soar through the air and many have both a Tail and a Tale! Explore the world of life around you and find out what is special about so many of the animals who live with us on our little blue planet. Registration can be completed online beginning June 1 by going to barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org and locating the Summer Reading program under our “Library Programs” tab. Parents and guardians, along with their children can also come in and register for the Summer Reading Program in person anytime during the library’s regular service hours between June 14 and June 26.

The reading portion of the Program runs for the 5-week period from Monday June 28, through Saturday, July 31. This year the reading logs must be returned by July 31st. Reading requirements are simple and every effort is made to adjust to a family's summer schedule of vacations and other summer events. Students along with their parents or guardians set their own reading goals as to the number of books they will read each week during the Summer Program.

Those participating can visit the library for their reading logs at any time. Encouraging youngsters to read over their summer vacation is the aim of the Summer Program. There is no contest to see who can read the greatest number of books. EVERYONE who completes the Summer Program and fulfills their reading goals will be invited to a special party (along with some great surprises) at the conclusion of the Program.

For more details, or to register find the “Library Programs” tab at www.barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org or call the library at 814-486-8011.

Pic of the Day - Once in a Lifetime Gobbler

Sharing this photo and description of todays hunt by Russ Gleixner

What a incredible morning to shoot a once in lifetime gobbler like this in the big woods..
All white wing feathers and smoke phased tail fan. Him and another gob came in strutting, hammering, spitting and drumming to put on a real good show. I passed on 4 other longbeards earlier this week, I'm just out for the fun of the hunt. I don't have to fill my 2nd tag like many guys think. I could care less, but if the right bird comes along and puts on a real good show and its a good hunt then I might shoot it. Good things come to those who wait. Not a big bird at all but beautiful.
**Note** This was shot in the big woods. No farms even in the vicinity of this area. 6 miles crows fly to the nearest little farm. Many wild gobblers can have white in them. Does not always mean they bred with a domestic when you see white in the feathers. 3/4" spurs 9in beard 14.8lbs.
Russ, thanks for allowing me to share this photo.
I've never seen a wild turkey with white feathers!
