Calarie Scramble-33 Year Tradition

The Emporium Country Club (ECC) recently hosted the 33rd Calarie Scramble - the first without our patriarch Bob Calarie. Bob passed away on May 25th of this year at the age of 83.

Golfing became a staple at ECC for the Calarie family in 1975 after Sam Calarie purchased and repaired a camp near the club in 1961. The camp is located on the turn north of the golf course. There had been fire damage, which Sam and his two sons, Jack and Bob, did the necessary repairs for what would become a great getaway for hunting, fishing, and eventually golf. Around 1985 a golf competition between the Calarie camp and McLachlan camp was started. It was known as the Emporium Golf Outing. This lasted through 1987. In 1988 Bob Calarie combined the competition into what is now called the Calarie Scramble. During these many years the Emporium Country Club, in particular Mike Keefer, has been very cordial and accommodating to my dad and those of us who participated in the Scramble. The Scramble has evolved such that it consists of four generations of golfers and friends. The old timers, who used to crush the ball when young, are now in awe of the younger players. The Calarie Scramble is lucky enough to have a player who has tied the Emporium Country Club record.

This year’s Scramble was won by Cameron Coccia, Keith Smouse, Andrew Sabula, and Doug Calarie with a score of 15 under par. A new record for the Scramble. It was nice to have a Calarie on the winning team. Not having our dad at the Calarie Scramble will never be the same.
He will be missed by all who knew him.

  1. Uncle Bob will be missed but he'll be there with every swing of the club, swig of an adult beverage, and fond memories of the past outings.
