Ryan Grimm Announces Candidacy for State Representative

Ryan Grimm, 27, of St. Marys, has announced his candidacy for State Representative in the 75th District. The seat, which includes both Elk and a portion of Clearfield County, will be vacated by State Representative Matt Gabler in January 2021. Grimm filed 31 pages of petitions from Elk and Clearfield counties in Harrisburg on Monday, February 17th.

Ryan Grimm attended Slippery Rock University and majored in Environmental Studies. He chose to return to the area and is currently employed at the Elk County Conservation District as a Resource Conservation Technician.

Grimm says he understands the needs of our area, “A wholesome and steady economy that allows for hard work to truly pay off is important to everyone.” Wise stewardship of tax-payer dollars is a major initiative of Ryan Grimm’s campaign, “I understand the needs of families that live paycheck to paycheck.”

A native of Cameron County, Ryan Grimm was regularly influenced by his strong commitment to family and his community. Grimm developed a robust team dynamic where he was often a leader in sports, “I have always appreciated the teachers, mentors, and coaches that have shaped my character throughout the years, so I know how critical education and extracurricular activities are to families in our area.” From a young age, Ryan Grimm was drawn to the outdoors and is truly passionate about maintaining a healthy environment. “I’m an avid hunter and fisherman, and I know how important Elk and Clearfield Counties’ forests and streams are to residents and tourists alike.”

Grimm currently lives with his wife, Taylor, and their dog, “Gerty” in Saint Marys, where they enjoy spending time off together hunting or playing in community sports leagues. Grimm’s wife is a nurse. “Her experience has shown me the need for additional support services for the aging population of our region as well as the major need for improved counseling and rehabilitation services for those struggling with alcohol and drug addiction in Elk and Clearfield Counties.”

Ryan Grimm, a local outdoorsman and family man, says he is looking forward to the opportunity to represent the area he knows so well, “I’m thrilled to be your Democratic candidate for the 75th district of Pennsylvania and I hope to win your votes in order to improve our hometown communities.”

Emporium Artist John Sidelinger

Article and photo credit of By Brianne Fleming bfleming@thecourierexpress.com Feb 27, 2020

ST. MARYS — An Emporium artist with a passion for painting local landscapes will have around 12 pieces displayed at Gallery 29 on South St. Marys Street starting Friday.

John Sidelinger, originally from Erie, has lived in Emporium since 1978, but has a passion for Elk County, since his father and other family members were from the St. Marys and Kersey areas.

“When I was kid and I would be in the woods, I had such an appreciation for what I saw,” he said. “It was a magical place to me back then.”

Although Sidelinger recalls having some glimmerings of an interest in art growing up, and doing some drawings in college, he said he was flattered when people began to take notice. He drew for Pennsylvania Sportsman Magazine for 25 years.

Sidelinger worked as a forester for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for many years. Wildlife and nature artwork has always been his focus.

He said he aims to convey his feelings through the artwork — the feel, smells and the sky over the woods, he said.

“I’ve heard people say, ‘I feel like I’ve been there,’” he said. “When I paint something, I want to evoke a pleasing experience or a memory.”

Gallery 29 Owner Jesse Gradl and partner Pete Winklbauer said they are grateful Sidelinger chose to be a part of this exhibit.

He has “unparalleled” attention to detail, Winklbauer said.

“I think John’s work is as good as I’ve seen anywhere in wildlife art,” he said.

Sidelinger has his paintings on display at the Cameron County Artisan Center, but primarily, he said, his artwork is for himself. He wakes up at about 3 or 4 a.m. each day, when it’s peaceful and there are no distractions, to paint.

He never forces a painting, Sidelinger adds, the idea should just be there. He won’t paint something to which he has no emotional connection.

Lately, Sidelinger has been painting lions, tigers and chimpanzees, different from his elk-themed artwork, he says. His favorite pieces are an elk painting and tiger head he created.

“I’m excited to have my work here — it’s local and there’s a sense of community,” Sidelinger says of the St. Marys gallery.

The Cameron County Project Extends a Thank You!

The Cameron County Project would like to thank the local businesses that hosted our Dinner and Drafting Sessions providing our leadership team, volunteers, and fellow residents space to share a meal, talk about the wonderful stories shared with us, and draft our Cameron County Value Statements. We extend a sincere, “Thank you!” to Aroma Café, Driftwood Saloon and Grill, Cabin Kitchen, and Pizza Palace.

We’re excited to share our Cameron County Value Statements and ask residents, camp owners, and people who work and play in Cameron County – “Did We Get This Right?” by having a variety of ways, both in person and online, for our friends and neighbors to review and comment on the statements through March and April.

This process will allow the project to conclude Phase 2 of the Community Heart and Soul process and begin transitioning to Phase 3: A #CamCoProud Vision of our Future, this May.

The 5th Annual Pork & Cork Event

It's not too early to Save the Date for the 5th Annual Pork &  Cork fundraising event!

The Sylvan Heritage Councils signature event is our Pork & Cork fundraiser. Held each June at the Andrews Farm at Salt Run, this major fundraising event includes dinner, local brews and wines, live music, silent auctions, and so much fun – all for a great cause.

Our Mission: The mission of the Sylvan Heritage Council is to pursue sustainable economic growth through the beautification, revitalization, and historic preservation of our community in such a way that capitalizes on our area’s abundant natural resources and maintains our proud local history.

About us: The Sylvan Heritage Council was formed in January 2007 of a group of local residents who hold true to the belief that beautification and preservation are the key to any successful community. We differ in our backgrounds and experiences, but we share a common vision and passion for making our hometown the best it can possibly be.

Funding is Available for Snowmobile & ATV Projects Throughout PA.

Funding is Available for Snowmobile & ATV Projects Throughout PA.

DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn states “We know improved riding means more visitors to areas where their numbers can have a positive economic impact on nearby communities.” Statewide PA has 179,017 active registered ATVs.

Where will Cameron County be in this?
I still have hope a designated ATV Trail can coexist in the wilds of Cameron County.

Sinnemahone Triple Crown Adds New Twists

Sinnemahone Triple Crown Adds New Twists

The successful launch of the Sinnemahone Triple Crown in 2019 brought numerous suggestions moving forward and organizers are moving on those ideas. Starting today competitors can register for all three events and save $25 on the registration fees. The other change is adding a team competition to the event.

Those registering for the April 4, Sinnemahone Canoe and Kayak, September 26 Sinnemahone Gravel Bike Race and October 17 Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run are guaranteed swag and $25.00 off registration fees. Registrations are only accepted in person or by phone ( 814-486-4314) at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office through March 16.

A team event was the suggestion from long-time canoe competitor Ken Gerg. Three people may register as a team. Each member of the team will compete in one of the events. The team with the lowest cumulative time will win the Team trophy. Divisions will include Mixed, Male, Female and Youth. The competitors must compete in the longest distance offered in each of the events. Organizers hope this will encourage more spectators at each of the events.

All the events are open to competitors seeking to only compete in the April, September of October options. Registration for the Sinnemahone Canoe and Kayak is open online at www.paddleguru.com.

The Austin Area School will be hosting a blood drive with American Red Cross in the school gymnasium February 19, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This year, the National Honor Society has switched organizations from Community Blood Bank to American Red Cross because CBB no longer comes to rural areas.

We hope to see you there!

Trout Stocking Schedules

Trout stocking schedules from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission are now available at my local offices, online at www.fishandboat.com and at the FishBoatPA mobile app.

The schedule is searchable by county, lists the waterways in alphabetical order, and indicates stocking dates and the species of trout that will be stocked. The commission plans to once again stock approximately 3.2 million trout in 707 streams and 130 lakes open to public angling. PFBC plans to double the amount of trophy-sized trout being stocked to approximately 60,000 fish, 70% of which are slated to be stocked during the preseason.

April 18 is the statewide opening day of trout season. Be sure to mark your calendar!
