Emporium’s newest entrepreneurs and co-owners of Good Things Growing LLC, Josh Zucal and Alex Reed were the guest speakers January 29th at the Rotary luncheon meeting. Good Things Growing is a start-up farming venture located here in Cameron County. What started as a conversation between friends, became a full-time vision for creating a micro-farm contributing local produce to our community and region. After one year of production and testing, 2019 will be the launch of something new for local consumers. By providing local raw food, grown with organic methods, Good Things Growing hopes to help create a healthier community where foodists can know where their produce is coming from as well as the farmers growing it.

Cross Country Skiing at Sinnemahoning Park

Sinnemahoning State Park, is offering a fun lesson on the popular sport of cross-country skiing through the Cross Country Skiing for Beginners program on Saturday, February 2nd, from 1 – 3 PM, at the Wildlife Center.

Experienced skier and former downhill ski instructor, Curt Weinhold, will explain the basics of cross-country skiing, equipment, and techniques and will guide beginners in practicing the "kick and glide" method.

Program will begin in the classroom with basic instruction, then head outdoors to a flat area to practice techniques. When participants are ready, Curt will lead the group on a short ski trip down the Lowlands Trail.

All equipment, including skis, poles, and boots will be provided. A limited number of adult sizes are available. Participants should dress in moisture-wicking layers and wear a waterproof outer layer. Blue jeans are not recommended.

Pre-registration is required by Thursday, January 31. To pre-register for a program, please visit the online DCNR Calendar of Events at http://events.dcnr.pa.gov. Be sure to include your shoe size in the "Comments" section.

Ronald J. "Joe" Uber

Ronald J. "Joe" Uber, 76, of 7775 Route 120, Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands Elk, St. Marys, PA on Tuesday (January 29, 2019) night. He was born February 12, 1942 in St. Marys, PA a son of the late Edith Vera Uber Ron graduated from Cameron County High School. He served in the US Army Reserve with Battery B, 4th Howitzer Br., 92nd Artillery Army Reserve Unit. He was a truck driver most of his life driving for various companies before retiring from City Transfer. Ron enjoyed being outdoors especially spending time on his John Deere Tractor and being with his pet dog Bella. He was a former member of the Emporium Fire Department. 

Ron is survived by two sons, William (Mary Lee) Uber, and Daniel Uber, both from Emporium; two daughters, Molly (Gary) Owens, Summerville, SC and Melissa (Eddie) Maxwell, Evans, CO; eight grandchildren, and his Companion, Barbara Masteller, Emporium.

 He was preceded in death by his step father and mother, Gerald Cato and Edith Vera Uber; former wife, Sally Mason; his twin brother, Donald Edward Uber and a special friend, Diane Bon.

 The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA on Friday from 4-7 PM. Because of his love of John Deere green, all are encouraged to wear something green. 

Memorial Service will be held at the Deeper Waters Ministries, 37 West Fifth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Rev. James Eastman, Pastor, officiating. 

Burial will be in the Moore Hill Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Joan M. Dynda

Joan M. Dynda, 75, of 100 Eddies Run Rd., Emporium, PA died at her residence on Wednesday morning. (January 30, 2019) She was born March 4, 1943 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late Earl H. and Lora Marshall Edwards. On November 12, 1988 in the First United Methodist Church she married Stanley Dynda, who survives.

 Joan graduated from Cameron County High School. Years ago she worked at Sylvania. She loved her cats and dogs and took many homeless animals into her home. 

In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, Scott Green, Emporium; several step children and several step grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl H. and Lora Marshall Edwards. 

There will be No Visitation.

 Services will be Private at the Barnett Funeral Home

. Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Great news for our watershed! 

Two projects were funded in Cameron County County and both compliment existing projects.

GRANTS AWARDED FOR SINNEMAHONING PROJECTS

HARRISBURG, Pa. (January 18) – The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) today announced nearly $550,000 in grants to develop and implement projects that benefit fishing, boating and aquatic resources within Cameron, Elk, Potter and McKean counties.

The funding is available through a 2007 settlement agreement with Norfolk Southern as restitution for environmental damages from a June 30, 2006 train derailment in rural Norwich Township, McKean County. Under the settlement, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay the Commonwealth $7.35 million as restitution for environmental damages. The PFBC received $3.675 million of the settlement.

The funds received through this damage settlement have been used to improve public fishing and boating access, fish habitat, water quality and stream health and to restore stream connectivity through the removal of barriers to fish movement such as dams and culverts.

The external projects funded today total approximately $550,000 and include:

Cameron County Conservation District, $99,720 – “May Hollow 49 AMD Discharge Passive Treatment System Expansion.” As part of the effort to restore the historic wild Brook Trout fishery within the Sterling Run watershed, expansion of this passive water treatment facility will remediate increased acid mine discharge flows from an abandoned coal mine to May Hollow Run, which is a major tributary to Sterling Run.

Cameron County Conservation District, $200,000 – “Restoration of the Upper Jerry Run Watershed to Benefit Native Eastern Brook Trout.” Upper Jerry Run is a tributary to the main stem of Sinnemahoning Creek. The objectives of the project are as follows: 1.) Eliminate significant erosion & sedimentation from adversely impacting the stream along six miles of dirt & gravel roadway through paving with Driving Surface Aggregate (DSA); 2) Elevate pH of the stream using DSA road paving consisting of sand-sized, compacted limestone; 3) Reconnect 1.25 miles of stream habitat by replacing a perched culvert to restore fish passage for naturally reproducing Brook and Brown Trout; 4) Stabilize eroding streambanks at three locations; 5) Improve in-stream habitat through the addition of large woody debris; 6) Work with the PA Department of Environmental Protection to upgrade the watershed to Exceptional Value for added protection; 7) Promote as a demonstration project by providing signage, publicity and training outreach.

With the addition of the current grant announcements, the PFBC has awarded over $3 million in grants to external partners from the Sinnemahoning Creek watershed settlement fund since the start of the grant program in 2008.

Russell E. Rhoads Memorial Ice Fishing Event

The Russell E. Rhoads Memorial Ice Fishing Event is scheduled for 2/9/19. the co-sponsors Bucktail Rod &  Gun Club, Cameron County Family Center and Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities are the primary sponsors. Russell passed away in 2017 at the young age of 30. He was a past volunteer at this event and enjoyed introducing young people to the sport of ice fishing.

 We feel this is a great way to recognize Russell.

Artisan Chocolate in time for Valentine’s Day

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center teaming up with Goblin’s Chocolates from St Mary’s and Kathy’s Creations from Emporium to provide sweets for your sweetheart.

For several years the John Keyes family has hand dipped strawberries for Cameron County customers. They are sold in boxes of 6 or 12 and can be covered in dark or milk chocolate. In addition boxed candy is also available ranging from the popular swamp box to handmade toffee which began the chocolate business.

Retired Cameron County teacher, Kathy Strycula has been covering peanuts for years, and now offers her treats for sale. The peanut clusters are sold in bags ranging in size from 6 count to party size.

The chocolates must be pre-ordered by February 8 and will be available starting February 12 for pick-up.You can place an order by calling the chamber at 814-486-4314 or stopping in M-F 10am-4pm, Tuesday night 6:30-9. Roger E. Long

Roger E. LONG, 65, of Galeton, PA, died Thursday, January 24, 2019 in his home. Born April 9, 1953, in Port Allegany, he was the son of Fred R. and F. Virginia Hartman Long. On August 9, 1975, in Emporium, he married the former Deborah J. Horning, who survives. A graduate of Galeton Area High School and Pittsburgh Art Institute, he owned and operated Bridge Street Marketing Group and Long Stone Company. He was a member of Galeton Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Roger loved the outdoors, working with his hands, building and creating.

 Surviving besides his wife, Deborah, are: his father, Fred Long of Galeton; three sons, Joshua E. (Carrie) Long of Knoxville, Chad E. (Heather) Long of Milford, DE, Brett A. Long of Johnson City, TN; a granddaughter, Jaley Long; four step-grandchildren; aunts, Barbara Hartman, Debbie Hartman, and June Schoonover; uncles, Art Long and David Bartholomew; and his faithful companion, Brodie.  

He was predeceased by his mother. 

 A private gathering was held at Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, PA.

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Patterson Cancer Center or Cole Hospice, c/o UPMC Cole, 1001 E. Second St., Coudersport, PA 16915, or the Galeton Public Library, 5 Park Lane, Galeton, PA 16922.

WINTER FURBEARERS

On Saturday, January 26th, Sinnemahoning State Park is offering a program on Winter Furbearers, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the classroom of the Wildlife Center.

Presented by retired Susquehannock State Forest field forester, Paul Lilja, this program will give visitors a chance to learn more about mammals, such as beavers, otters, foxes and weasels, that have historically been trapped for their furs.

Participants will learn how these furbearers live and thrive in the winter woods of the PA Wilds and how to improve their chances of spotting these animals in their native habitats.

This conservation program will also provide participants insight into how Pennsylvania’s practice of the North American model for wildlife management has helped to maintain furbearer populations at healthy numbers while providing increased opportunities for songbirds and other non-game animals as well through wildlife habitat management.

Gerald E. "Gerry" Gardner

Gerald E. "Gerry" Gardner, 69, of Emporium, PA formerly of Tonawanda, NY died at his residence on Sunday (January 20, 2019) evening. He was born January 30, 1949 in North Tonawanda, New York a son of the late Gerald and Gertrude Russell Gardner. Gerry served with the US Army during Vietnam from 1966 through 1968. He loved Cameron County so much that he resided here for the past 27 years. He worked as a machinist with several area companies. Gerry was an avid outdoorsman. He loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Kailee.

He is survived by one son, Daniel (Lynn Wark) Gardner, North Tonawanda, NY; one cherished granddaughter, Kailee M. M. Gardner, two brothers, Allan (Donna) Gardner, Tonawanda, NY; John (Tina) Gardner, North Tonawanda, NY; one sister, Carol (Milt) Nelson, Lewiston, NY and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

There will be No Visitation. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be announced at a later date.

The Cameron County Community Chest Board of Directors wishes everyone a very Happy New Year. As of January 18th, we have collected $13,086.00 toward our $19,000 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. The 2019 fund drive will stay open until September 30th.

This month’s featured organization will be the Penn Highlands Community Nurses.

Penn Highlands Community Nurses is a non-profit home care organization established in 1929 that provides comprehensive services to the residents of Cameron, Elk, McKean, Clearfield, Jefferson and Potter Counties.

Services include:

Home Health Services- provides in-home skilled medical services for those experiencing post-hospital care, or changes in a health care condition which include: Nursing, Rehabilitation Therapy, Medication Management, Personal Care, Medical Social Services and Nutrition Counseling.

Hospice Services- provides comprehensive services for those with an advanced illness. Nursing, emotional and spiritual support is provided to improve quality of life for the person in their home or residence.

Home Support/Private Duty-offers non-medical supportive in-home services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help people remain independent and safe in their home. Services include, but are not limited to personal care, bathing assistance, hair care, preparing meals, laundry, shopping and respite care.

Adult Day Services-offers an activity-oriented, medically supervised day program for people 60 and older with physical or mental limitations. The Center is located in St. Marys and is open 8:00 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Archibald “Arch” Robinson

Archibald “Arch” Robinson, Jr., 95, formerly of West Sixth Street, Emporium, Seneca Falls, New York and Lantana, Florida, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium. Born July 1, 1923 in Watertown, NY he was the son of Archibald and Emma Lione Robinson. He was a 1940 graduate of Watertown High School and St. Lawrence University in 1943. On December 29, 1945 in Williamsport he married Evelyn Marie Sullivan, his wife of 57 years, who passed away June 1, 2002.

He relocated to Emporium in 1943 where he was employed by Sylvania Electric until being transferred to Seneca Falls in 1970 where he was employed until retiring in 1979. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Emporium. He was also a member & past president of the Emporium Men’s Club, and a member of the Cameron County Grand Prix Association, Emporium Shade Tree Commission and Emporium Masonic Lodge #382 F& AM

He coached & played baseball & softball in Emporium for many years. After retiring he enjoyed wintering in Florida where he played softball for the Boynton Beach Seniors until he was 80 years old. Arch played in two Senior Softball World Series, one in Greensboro, NC and one in Houston, TX. He loved sports of all kinds like hunting, fishing, tennis and skiing and he shared this love by teaching hunter safety at the Sylvania Rifle Club where he was a member of the rifle team. He was a founding member of the Sylvania Ski Club and the Cowley Hill Ski Run. He also enjoyed traveling with his family all over the United States and Europe.

Arch is survived by: one son, David Robinson of Emporium; one daughter, Beverly Dirvonas and her husband Thomas of Windsor, Colorado; two grandsons, Scott Dirvonas and his wife Heather of Edwards, Colorado and Michael Dirvonas and his wife Erin of Fort Collins, Colorado; and four great grandchildren, Lauren, Amanda, Maxwell, and Evan Dirvonas all at home.

There will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.

Ben Porkalob, Conservation Education Coordinator for the Keystone Elk Country Alliance at the Elk Viewing Center, was the guest speaker at Emporium Rotary’s luncheon meeting January 15th. Ben grew up in Kane and has a connection to Rotary. Growing up his parents hosted a Rotary exchange student from Tokyo, Japan, and to this day they still keep in touch with his family. Ben also received a Rotary scholarship when he graduated from high school which helped with tuition while 

attending IUP.

Many of you knew Ben as a teacher at the Woodland Elementary School here in Emporium for the past19 years, but in August of 2018, Ben decided to change careers somewhat, although his job still involves teaching. The Elk Viewing Visitor Center aims to educate the public about all things wildlife, including the Pennsylvania elk herd. They offer different types of education opportunities and unique educational field trips and distance learning. Over 1500 students visit the center each year from kindergarten to college. It appears winter has decided to come at us full force❄️🌬❄️ So who's ready for some winter fun?! ☃️

 The Winter Loaner Program will be available starting this Saturday January 19, 2019; Monday-Saturday 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Cross country ski and snowshoeing equipment can be signed out at the Wildlife Center by an adult 18 years and older. Evard L. “Ed” Klock

Evard L. “Ed” Klock, 71, resided at 963 Cherry Hill Road, St. Marys, and a former resident of Emporium, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Penn Highlands DuBois, surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born July 19, 1947, in St. Marys, son of the late Alvin O. and Adaline Fenton Klock of Emporium. Ed was a lifelong resident of the area, was a graduate of Cameron County High School, Class of 1965, and a 1969 graduate of the University of Akron. Evard was a former employee of Keystone Carbon Company and a retired employee of Eastern Sintered Metals.

On December 15, 1973, in the Queen of the World Church, Ed married his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth A. Ritter, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Kristie Catalano and her husband Christopher of York; a son, Kevin Klock and his fiancée Madison Williams of St. Marys; grandsons, Nathan, Noah, Idris, and Rowan; a brother, John Klock and his wife Carol of Florida; and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a nephew and his wife, John Alan and

 Roberta Kay Klock.

Evard had a loving devotion to his family and enjoyed being with them. He had a great work ethic and he enjoyed spending time walking in the park and supporting all of the local sports teams.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 12:00 PM, with the Rev. Jeff Noble, Pastor, officiating.

 Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation was at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday, January 11, 2019, 

from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.

Pearl E Vought

Pearl E Vought, 92, of 534 W. Allegany Ave., Emporium, PA died at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Sunday (January 13, 2019) night following a lengthy illness. She was born February 8, 1926 in Erie, PA a daughter of the late Gustave and Ruth DePew Hagman. On June 12, 1950 in Wesleyville, PA she married the late Charles E. Vought who preceded her in death in 1999.

Pearl and her husband Charley owned and operated Charley's Friendly Tavern in Emporium 

for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Stephen) Ostrum, Emporium; two grandchildren: Philip Vought and Rhonda Vought; three great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, Edward Paul Vought who died in 1975 and a sister, Beulah Stevens.

There will be No Visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Monday (January 21, 2019) at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Rotary News

Program Chair, Linda Lundberg, introduced the guest speaker, Brian Reid, at the Rotary luncheon meeting January 9th. Brian was born and raised in Emporium, graduating from CCHS in 2002. He studied Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh and has worked at SGL Carbon as a Software Developer for 11 years.

Brian spoke to the group about one of his passions, photography which he has been doing since 2010. In 2015, he started focusing on a specialized type of photography for recording images of astronomical objects and large areas of the night sky. Brian presented a slide show of night photographs and spoke of the basics of photography, along with the effects of atmosphere and the earth's rotation on photos.

Guests attending the meeting were Grant Reid, nephew of Rotarian, Linda Reid and John & Paige Rosenberger, friends of Gary & Diana Boden.

College Scholarship Workshop

Timothy L. Palumbo

Timothy L. Palumbo, 59, of 213 W. 4th St., Apt. 7, Emporium, PA formerly of Glen Burnie, Maryland died at Penn Highlands Elk, St. Marys, PA on Thursday afternoon. (January 10, 2019)

He was born June 21, 1959 in Annapolis, Maryland a son of the late Nunzio J. and Jerry A. Scruggs Palumbo. Tim moved to Emporium four years ago from Glen Burnie, Maryland. He enjoyed fishing and being in the outdoors. Most of all he loved spending time with his many nieces and nephews and attending their activities.

 He is survived by two brothers, Joe (Barb) Palumbo, Emporium; Danny (Sharon) Palumbo, Glen Burnie, MD; a sister, Tina A. O'Donnel, Pittsville, MD; two nieces, five nephews along with eleven great nieces and seven great nephews.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Nunzio J. and Jerry A. Scruggs Palumbo.

There will be No Visitation. Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

CDH Designs Tops Facebook Contest

 CDH Designs received the most “likes” in the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Facebook contest. The chamber asked Facebook users to vote by liking the windows decorated for Christmas. Nearly one dozen businesses participated.

 The storefront with the most votes received a free chamber membership.

Classes coming to Emporium in January

Classes coming to Emporium in January

CDH Designs will ring in 2019 by offering a workshop on what trends you can expect in 2019. Cherie Miller owner of CDH Designs in Emporium will talk color, accessories and what styles are in and those that are out. Wine and snacks will be served. The workshop will be held at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center Sunday January 20 from 4-6pm. The fee is $15.

Stained glass artist Stephen Winston will offer two classes. Both feature snowflake designs which can be seen at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center. The classes are divided by skill level and will be held simultaneously Sunday January 27, February 3 and 10 from 1:30-4pm at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Artisan Center. Students will select glass, cut, grind, foil and solder the snowflakes. The price is $35 and seating is limited to 10. Payment is required to reserve your seat. Reservations are accepted at the chamber, or online at www.cameroncountychamber.og.

Bessie L. Cook

Bessie L. Cook, 84, of 107 Bayberry Road, St. Marys, PA formerly of Clear Creek Rd., Emporium died at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, PA on Tuesday (January 8, 2019) evening following a lengthy illness. She was born November 21, 1934 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late Myrle and Ellen Heidrich Priest. On December 22, 1951 in Emporium she married the late Lee C. Cook. Mrs. Cook graduated from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, as a registered Nurse in the class of 1984. She was a charge nurse in the CCU at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport until her retirement in 2007 and then worked several years as a supervisor and charge nurse at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys. 

She is survived by a daughter, Sheryl (Monte) Surat, St. Marys; son, Douglas (Cindy) Cook, Emporium; nine grandchildren: Tiffany, DJ, Lauren, Douglas, Jonathan, Jacob, Torrey, Jonathan and Mariah; eight great grandchildren: Dylan, Aiden, Karen, Payton, Madelyn, Anthony, Gwyn and Levi.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, Myrle and Ellen Heidrich Priest; husband, Lee C. Cook who died March 16, 1997; son, Lee Joseph Cook who died Feb. 28, 2011; two sisters, Velma Earley and Myrle Thomas; and a brother, Leonard "Butch" Priest.

 There will be No Visitation and services will be private.

 Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elk Haven, 785 Johnsonburg Rd., 

St. Marys, PA 15857.
