Weekend in the Wilds Winners
Each box for Weekend in the Wilds held Friday and Saturday earned check marks! Weather-check, vendors-check, food-check, crowd-check, Firequacker Duck Derby-check, Stargazing-check and fireworks-check!
According to Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak the winners were the people who attended plus some lucky ducks from the Firequacker Duck Derby. This year that event was held on North Broad Street in Emporium. “Thanks to the fire department and Emporium Water Company, we were able to flood a portion of the street and et the ducks race to the finish line. It created a spectacle for the spectators!”
The first duck to reach the pool noodle finish line adopted by Jane Laird from Emporium. Frank Zito from Georgia took time from a family reunion to train his duck to a second place finish and 7 year old Cole Motchenbaugh visiting from Allison Park talked his duck into third place. They received $100, $75 and $50.
The fireworks blasted off following a presentation by the Cameron County Memorial Detail at the Cameron County High School Football Stadium. The nearly 30-minute show brought oohs and ahs from the crowd. The 50/50 paid $380 to Jody Reid from Emporium who had the lucky ticket.
Mountaineer Search & Rescue report that a Big Foot was not returned. Anyone with information on the missing foot can anonymously contact the chamber or bring it to the chamber with no questions asked. The winner of the Big Foot Calling Contest was Cameron County Fair Queen Lia Inman. She performed the perfect Danger, Location and Mating Calls according to judges.
Plans are underway for the 2019 version of Weekend in the Wilds to be held July 5 & 6. Solak says numerous people have asked for a 5k run on the West Creek Rail Trail. She is now looking for a group wanting to raise money to host the event.
