Call to Action Meeting Well Attended

The chairs were filled at tonight's "Call to Action" meeting headed by Jessica Herzing. Jessica, a resident of Cameron County, outlined the Cameron County Project initiative.

The Cameron County Project’s mission is to encourage residents to be engaged and to build community pride by focusing on what unites us as residents in Cameron County – Our stories of why we love it here. I want to create a force of community pride and positivity that is contagious to my neighbors, warmly welcomed and encouraged to thrive, helping guide decision making in our community.

There are so many ways to promote change and make decisions in a community – many rely on things that an accountant, like myself, normally can get behind – mainly numbers and statistics, ratios to this and that. But you and I are not numbers, we’re hearts, souls, experiences, and beliefs – all that shape how we view the good, and bad, in our county. The Cameron County Project is patterned after the Orton Family Foundation’s successful Community Heart and Soul program that captures the positive of a community through the stories told by those living here. Its principles are simple.

1. Involve Everyone – and take the collective “idea bucket” to them, so their ideas can be heard.

2. Focus on what Matters – Identify the community’s characteristics and attributes where residents’ emotional attachments lie to define what matters most about our community and use those as a guide to how we change and grow.

3. Play the Long Game – Focus the project on ensuring that the community’s plans or ideas don’t just sit on the shelf but are owned by the residents who have a commitment to their success.

It’s through this development of deep emotional connections to the community that lead to a resident’s commitment, action and a community that can build resilience through the practice of working together and learning new skills.

Jessica ended tonight's meeting speaking to several people about volunteering their time for this project.

You can also follow the project and participate through their website www.thecameroncountyproject.com or by emailing Jess: camcoproud@gmail.com.

Rotary News

Sarah Nolan (left) one of Emporium’s newest residents, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting January 23rd.

Sarah grew up in Michigan, and after graduating in 1995, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. She has quite an impressive military background with 20 years of military service. During her service, she has lived many places in the U.S. and overseas including, Okinawa, Iraq & Afghanistan After her retirement as First Sergeant/USMC, she was looking for a place to put down roots. After visiting a friend in Emporium one Thanksgiving, she fell in love with our quaint little town and states that “Emporium is the friendliest place she has lived”. She decided to move here, along with her son, who is in ninth grade, and purchased the big home on the corner of Fifth and Walnut Streets (former Rishell property). Sarah is not only a beautiful artist, but she is also learning to renovate and restore the home herself with the help of “You Tube”. She spoke to the club on the generation gaps between the Traditionalists or Silent generation born 1945 and before up to and including Gen Z or Centennials born 1996 and later. Sarah is also a beautiful artist. Pictured with Sarah is Rotarian, Diana Boden.

Also attending the meeting was Sally Guloien, guest and wife of Rotarian, Dave Guloien.

Cameron County Community Chest 2018 Fund Drive – Jan. Update

Cameron County Community Chest 2018 Fund Drive – Jan. Update

The Cameron County Community Chest Board of Directors wishes everyone a very Happy New Year. As of January 22nd, we have collected $11,297.00 toward our $20,100 goal. That puts us at 56% of our goal. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. The 2018 fund drive will stay open until September 30th.

This month’s featured organization is Penn Highlands Community Nurses.

Penn Highlands Community Nurses is a non-profit home care organization that provides comprehensive services to patients in more than a dozen counties throughout Pennsylvania, caring for more than 1,200 individuals each day.

Types of home care services provided include:

Supportive Care: Support services provide the helping hand patients with advanced illnesses need to stay safe and independent at home. Patients with advanced illnesses that don’t have a cure can face unique challenges, like frequent trips to the hospital or doctors’ offices for the management of pain and other symptoms. The goal of supportive care is to ease these challenges.

Home Support Services: Through home support services, also commonly known as private duty services, well-trained, compassionate personal care aides can help elderly patients or individuals with a physical disability or chronic illness remain safe in their homes.

Home Health: Home health is available for patients who no longer need hospitalized but still need professional care, teaching and assessment. For them, health care comes to their homes through visits by Penn Highlands Community Nurses staff. Many patients have chronic diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or lung disease, that require ongoing changes in their plan of care. Others may need short-term care with wound care or help taking medicines.

Hospice: Hospice is a special kind of care that offers comfort and support to individuals who are facing any type of life-limiting illness. A patient doesn’t have to be bedbound or critically ill to be on hospice. Being on hospice means that with or without this specific program, the outcome of an illness will be the same. But with hospice, a patient and family will have the support of a skilled team of professionals, including nurses, hospice aides, social services, pastoral care and physical, speech and occupational therapists. The majority of hospice care is provided in the patient's home, the home of a loved one, or in a contracted nursing home.

Adult Day: Adult Day, a licensed center located in St. Marys, offers socialization and supervision for older adults, and a much needed break for their caregivers. Adult Day provides an activity-oriented program in a pleasant atmosphere from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Penn Highlands Community Nurses can be reached for all services at 800-841-9397. A comprehensive overview of services is available at www.communitynurses.org.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager. Call to Action* meeting – Monday January 29 at Artisan Center

Call to Action* meeting – Monday January 29 at Artisan Center

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

To Jessica Herzing, of The Cameron County Project, that is what community is all about; “Coming together for the good of our town, our county and our neighbors. That is just one of the things that makes Cameron County really special, and a great place to live.” She writes in an open letter to the County of Cameron, its residents and friends, as she promotes The Cameron County Project initiative. Specifically, she is highlighting an upcoming “Call to Action” meeting that will take place at 7pm on Monday January 29, 2018 at the Cameron County Artisan Center.

She continues the letter to explain details about the Cameron County Project initiative and what she hopes for its future, “Every single one of you is my community; you’re all my neighbors and if you’re anything like me, circa 2016, you have no idea how important your story, ideas, and concerns are to our community. If you only knew how important you are, you would be a force to be reckoned with.

I know this project will promote a sense of pride in county for my fellow residents and I am confident in the success of my goal to bring more people, of all ages, genders, and social backgrounds, to the table, removing the stigma that the same ten people make all the decisions in our county, and develop leaders from visionary residents from whom we’ve yet to hear. It is my hope through sheer positivity and openness, we can build the trust needed to share in the success of change as it occurs and really own our community, its identity and well-being, as neighbors working together toward the same goals. No one person or idea can spark growth and change a community, but together – the possibilities are delightfully endless.

If this sounds like something you want to a part of -- The Cameron County Project will be hosting a *Call to Action* meeting – Monday, January 29th at the Chamber and Artisan Center. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 7 pm and run about an hour. This meeting is intended to recruit volunteers – but will also be discussing the Project, its goals, and its upcoming projects and events. I want to invite all residents and friends of Cameron County seeking to promote positive vibes, long-lasting community pride and being a champion of what residents love about our community to attend.

Kind Regards from your neighbor,

Jess Herzing”

Edward Bernard Lundberg

Edward Bernard Lundberg, longtime resident of Emporium, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at
the age of 92.

Ed was born in Bradford, PA on August 14, 1925 to Mary and Edward Lundberg. At the age of 10 he moved with his parents from Olean to Emporium where he graduated from Emporium High School in 1942. Upon graduation, he worked as a draftsman at Sylvania until he entered the Air Force as an Aviation Cadet.

He married the love of his life, Joyce Magnuson, on May 25, 1946 and they were devoted to one another for 71 years. Even in the last few years, Ed never left Joyce's side as she took residency at the Felt Manor Assisted Living.

After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1950, Ed served the community as a healthcare provider in various hometown pharmacies for 60 years. He was a sole proprietor at Lundberg Pharmacy, partnered with Paul DeVittorio at Devland Pharmacy and then partnered with Ken Burkhouse forming Burklund Pharmacy. Later in his business career, he worked for his son Blair at Lundberg Pharmacy. Even after retirement, Ed would spend the last few hours of each day standing beside his son and greeting customers in the store. He took pride in knowing everyone in the community and sharing a conversation with them while they shopped.

Ed also served the community in many other facets. He started the Cameron County Cardiac Committee and was its director for 65 years; he served as Emporium Foundation Director for almost 50 years, was a charter member of Emporium Country Club, Bank Director of the Emporium Trust/Bucktail Bank, and served on the SUN-FNB-Northwest Bank Advisory Board. Ed was also a former director of the Emporium Water Company, CC Land Development, and the Grove Home.Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium, the American Legion for over 70 years, was a 60 year member of the Emporium Masonic Lodge, now Driftwood-Emporium Lodge #532 and the Coudersport Consistory, and a past member of the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona.

For many years you could find Ed watching golfers from his home while they teed off at Hole 6 at the Emporium Country Club and whether they wanted it or not, he would find time to give advice to all players on their game/form.

Ed loved spending time with his family and following his grandkids' sporting activities. He enjoyed playing baseball and golf, following all sports on TV and playing cards with his group of friends. Ed found solitude in long rides in the woods, cutting grass on his riding lawnmower and burning in his woodstove.

He is survived by: his wife, Joyce; his two sons, Craig Lundberg of Waltham, Mass. and Blair Lundberg (Linda) of Emporium; six grandchildren, Tom Lundberg (Courtney), Adam Lundberg, Michael Lundberg (Allison), Krista LeZotte (Darin), Brittany Lundberg, Jonathan Lundberg; and one great granddaughter, Karina Lundberg.

Cameron County - High Water & Ice

Warmer weather, heavy rains and frozen creeks combined forces on Friday, January 12. Many low lying areas in the county were flooded, while other areas watched large ice chunks pile up over the creek banks that were overrun with high water. One trailer 2 miles west of Emporium was surrounded by water and ice on Friday, its occupants filming the scene live on Facebook. I live near this home and I don't believe I have ever seen the water this high. These two photos show the ice that was left behind after the water receded.
The video has been shared on my FB page for those that may want to view it.

22 miles away in the village of Sinnamahoning, residents were busy watching the river rise alarmingly high. By afternoon, the ice had risen to the bottom of the bridge that is across from the Willows. Fortunately, the water receded and the ice was able to continue downstream with no further damage to the bridge. In past years the bridge has suffered damage from the ice.

This photo shows the bridge on its side in February of 1977.

I'd like to thank my friends for allowing me to share these photos from Friday and 1977.

Mountaineer Search and Rescue Looking for Your Help

Mountaineer Search and Rescue Looking for Your Help

Endless Mountains Chapter 34 A.B.A.T.E. and Mack’s Rhythm & Brews Inc are hosting a fund raiser to benefit Mountaineer Search and Rescue. The event includes entertainment by Jonathan Meade, 50/50, and Chinese Auction. The doors at Mack’s Rhythm & Brews Sports Bar will open Saturday February 3 at 7pm.

“The chapter supports organizations in the community,” says A.B.A.T.E. president Robin Overturf. Mountaineer Search and Rescue team members are highly trained in finding lost and missing individuals in the region. This year during hunting season, the team aided in the search for individuals in Elk, Potter and Cameron Counties. The team also volunteers at events in the county including but not limited to Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic, and Sizerville State Park Autumn Festival, plus places American Flags on the parking meters in downtown Emporium eleven times a year.

The team relies on donations and state aid to provide materials and fuel for traveling to calls. The only fundraiser for the team is the Big Foot Hunt held in conjunction with Weekend in the Wilds held the first Saturday of July. “Because of the limited resources for this volunteer organization, we wanted to shine the spotlight on the volunteers and provide funding for Mountaineer Search and Rescue” continued Overturf.

The local A.B.A.T.E. chapter promotes motorcycle rights across Pennsylvania. Endless Mountains Chapter 34 is the smallest in the state with 48 members. The group meets at 11AM the second Saturday of each month at the Emporium Moose. Membership is open to anyone, including those that do not own motorcycles.

Chase the Winter Blahs Away

Chase the Winter Blahs Away

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce hosting a taste testing event Saturday January 20 from noon to 3pm. Erin Solveson will unveil the latest home business in Cameron County. Earth Below brews kombucha at the home of Solveson and her husband and two daughters. Kombucha is a non-alcoholic fermented tea which is brewed using live raw cultures. The drink is a probiotic with fizzy flavor combinations.

Solveson says this is the first brewery in the PA Wilds dedicated to kombucha. On Saturday people will be invited to taste the different flavors and purchase the drink.

On the same day St Marys Snowmobile Association planning on its dice run. Unlike past years when the ride centered on DCNR trails, the focus will be the newly completed West Creek Rails Trails. The ride will begin and end at the association club house just outside of St Marys. Riders will roll the dice in the gravel parking lot along the trail in downtown Emporium.

Organizers say they could have more than 200 sleds ride through Emporium. Tina Johns Solak, executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce calls this event an economic windfall for restaurants in the immediate area of the trail. “Traditionally this time of year is slow for those businesses, but having an influx of riders who come from Ohio, and New York provides an opportunity to put downtown Emporium on the map.” Recently Pizza Palace Plus voted by snowmobile enthusiasts as one of the best restaurants.

That event is weather dependent. A final decision will be announced by the St Marys Snowmobile Association by midweek

What Does the Sylvan Heritage Council Do ?

"What does the Sylvan Heritage Council do for our community?" . . . a question I was asked recently. We're currently working on a brand new beautiful website with a ton of photos and information to share, but until then, let me give you a little preview. Since our simple, uncertain beginnings in 2007, we have not only persevered, but have become a positive, driving force for beautification and preservation throughout Emporium and Cameron County.

Here are list of some projects that you may or may not realize we have been instrumental in creating or, quite possibly, may not have happened without our commitment to our hometown: Welcome to Emporium signs, Hardscape and landscape of the triangle at Routes 120/155, Landscaping of the Erie Insurance triangle, Emporium Sesquicentennial street banners, 154 Military street banners, Pilato Studios' public art, Landscaping of the Northern Tier building, Cameron County Courthouse veranda benches, Establishment of two scholarships for CCHS graduating seniors, Westerwald Pottery sales, east and west end bridge color selection, Pork & Cork community event, Military window and many varied window displays over the years, CCHS spirit flags (in cooperation with the school district and various booster organizations - in the works!), various downtown business signage projects, various downtown facade improvement projects, and, excitedly we announce that, in cooperation with the Cameron County IDA, the County of Cameron, and the Emporium Borough, we recently obtained a $31,150 grant from the Dept. of Community and Economic Development to overhaul the facades of 7 downtown businesses! We may be quiet, but we are proud of the selfless volunteer work we have done - and the impact we have had.
