2017 Backyard Conservation Workshop

2017 Backyard Conservation Workshop

The Cameron County Conservation District will be hosting their annual Backyard Conservation Workshop for small scale and hobby farmers on April 12th, from 6-8 pm at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce. This workshop is free!

This year speakers will include LouAnn Swope from Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Ryan Magaro from Rich Valley Apiary. Swope will speak on the importance of soil health, and practices to improve soil fertility for those interested in backyard gardens. Magaro will discuss bee keeping in Cameron County and other important pollinators. Swope will then follow up with a discussion on cost share programs from NRCS, that can help install pollinator habitat and high tunnels which can be used to extend the growing season for produce. Each participant will be provided with a FREE soil sample test kit.

Finger foods will be served. Seating is limited to twenty people. Pre-registration is required prior to April 7th. Sign up at the Conservation District office, or call 814-486-2244 to reserve your spot.
