Prescription Drug Take Back Set for April 30

Prescription Drug Take Back Set for April 30

Next Saturday, April 30, is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The day is designed to ensure proper disposal of unused prescription drugs and to keep the drugs from being misused and abused. According to a 2011 survey in Pennsylvania, 14 percent of youth surveyed admitted to taking prescription drugs that were not prescribed to them and 18 percent felt that prescription drugs were not harmful.

Prescription drugs may be dropped off at the following locations in our area.
Drop-off hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
•McKean County Sheriff’s Department, 17129 Route 6, Smethport.
•Pennsylvania State Police Coudersport Barracks, 3140 E. Second St., Coudersport.
•Potter County Sheriff’s Department, Potter County Courthouse, 1 E. Second St., Room 24, Coudersport.
•Coudersport Borough Police Department, 201 S. West St., Coudersport.
Pennsylvania State Police Emporium Barracks, 12921 Route 120, Emporium.

The Emporium Police Department also has a permanent drop-off box at 421 N. Broad St., Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Click here for more information about National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pennsylvania State Police Emporium Barracks and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 11th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to 12921 Route 120, Emporium. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)
The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last September, Americans turned in 350 tons (over 702,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,000 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 10 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 5.5 million pounds—more than 2,750 tons—of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the April 30 Take Back Day event, go to the DEA Diversion website

ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE Q & A SESSION

ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE SERVICES, INC. TO HOLD Q & A SESSION FOR OPIATE/HEROIN EPIDEMIC

Ridgway, PA – We’ve all heard about heroin taking the lives of our community members…some of which may be friends, some may be family members, or acquaintances. Regardless of our relationship, we are all affected by the current heroin epidemic, and the overdose deaths continue to increase. Deaths from heroin have tripled in the last five years. Pennsylvania has a higher overdose rate than most states. We’ve all also heard many radio commercials indicating why our youth first starting using heroin/opiates in the first place. One of those reasons identified was the lack of knowledge about drugs in general. ADAS is committed to providing that knowledge and is taking it a step further for our community.

Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services, Inc. (ADAS) will hold a question and answer session about the opiate/heroin epidemic at the Cameron County High School on April 26, 2016 at 6:00pm and at the North Central building on May 17, 2016 at 6:00pm for all to attend. This event is open to the general public; anyone and everyone who is interested in learning more about heroin/opiates along with what services are available to a drug user and/or their families.

Anyone can become addicted to heroin and/or prescription pain pills…Anyone… Addiction does not discriminate against race, gender, ethnicity, etc. There is no one way to prevent addiction, other than education and prevention efforts to inform people to never start.

Prescription pain pills (Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin) are all used to treat pain, but are highly addictive. Many people are prescribed prescription pain pills for legitimate uses, however, when that prescription runs out, many are still left with not only pain, but now withdrawal to deal with. This is when the user will look for another way to treat the pain and withdrawal…Some may ask friends or acquaintances and others look to the streets, which is where the heroin comes into play.

So rather than turning a blind eye or thinking that it doesn’t exist, why not become educated and work with community officials to stop this epidemic. Please take the time to attend this much needed event.

For more information contact Lisa Cherry at (814) 788-2080 or cherryl@adasonline.org or visit www.adasonline.org.

George B. Stevenson Dam Dredging Project to Occur in 2016

George B. Stevenson Dam Dredging Project to Occur in 2016

Grove Township - Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks has announced that sediment removal will occur in the northern end of the George B. Stevenson reservoir and around the boat launch area in 2016.

Dredging, combined with the stream alignment and shoreline stabilization projects also slated for 2016, will improve fish and wildlife habitat in the lake while decreasing sedimentation buildup. Additionally, removal of the sediment will provide park visitors with enhanced recreational opportunities to the upper reaches of the reservoir. The removed silt will be spread on reclaimed strip mines to improve forest fertility in Sproul State Forest.

The dredging process will require a temporary drawdown of the water level in the reservoir by about 10 feet to expose the areas of silt that need to be removed. Drawdown is scheduled to begin May 1, 2016. The drawdown will impact the northern reaches of the lake from Lushbaugh Run, down to the handicap accessible fishing platform. Maps of impacted areas will be posted throughout the park on designated bulletin boards and available at the Park Office and Wildlife Center.

Dredging is expected to begin late-spring to early-summer and continue throughout the winter season. Once the dredging operations begin the park road will also be closed from the Lake Day Use Area entrance to Goss Road due to slippery conditions caused by sediment removal. The areas of impact, including the boat launch, mooring, eagle watch, access road along west side of lake and parking areas will be closed to the public.

No boating will be permitted on the lake after drawdown. Pontoon boat and kayak programs, as well as the kayak and canoe loaner program will not be offered during this time.

The lower portion of the lake will remain open for fishing near the dam breast on the north side of the trash booms and Short Bend Run along the eastern lake shoreline. Current fish populations will not be affected; however, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will not stock trout in the lake in 2016. Fishing will not be permitted near the dredging operation.

More information will be posted as it becomes available. For more details or to be put on the Sinnemahoning State Park’s email list for current updates, please call the Park Office & Wildlife Center at 814-647-8401, or email SinnemahoningSP@pa.gov.

Common Loons at Sinnemahoning State Park

11 common loons were seen on the lake today at Sinnemahoning State Park. Loons winter on the Atlantic Ocean in the neighborhood of the Chesapeake Bay, and breed on northern lakes from upper New York through New England and Canada. They are infrequent visitors in north-central Pennsylvania, usually seen only in low numbers, in spring and fall as they migrate through our area.
This awesome photo was taken today by park volunteer, Jan Thoms.
