Landfill improvements approved in Cameron County

EMPORIUM — At Thursday’s meeting, Cameron County Commissioners approved a payment from Act 13 funds for much-needed improvements to the county’s landfill. Funds of $4,377 were granted to the Cameron County Solid Waste Authority to pay half of the repairs deemed necessary through an engineering study. The solid waste authority will be responsible for the other half of the needed funds.

Commissioner Lori Reed stated that there were a number of issues that needed to be addressed immediately. Commissioner Phil Jones was appointed to the Headwater RCD for the Sinnemahoning Stakeholders Association. The stakeholders’ board determines where to direct grant funds coming from the interest on a $3 million payment awarded because of the Gardeau train derailment several years ago when sodium hydroxide was dumped into the stream, killing fish, plants and insects and causing a massive clean-up and monitoring effort by the company and local entities. The grants are issued to pay for environmental and educational projects. Notice of an application made by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to the U.S. Department of Labor was received for the 2016 Mine Safety and Health Administration.

A notice was received from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) of their application for a general permit, which covers maintenance, testing, repair, rehabilitation or replacement of water obstructions and encroachments. The permit concerns replacement of a footbridge over the East Branch of Cowley Run in Sizerville State Park.

A “thank you” letter was received by the county from the Walters family for efforts to find their lost family member in Wykoff Run during deer season. The family included a $500 donation to the Emergency Management team that helped with the search. A similar letter and donation was received by Mountaineer Search and Rescue for their efforts, as well, and the Wykoff Run Campers’ Association has also reached out to show their appreciation.

The next meeting of the Cameron County Commissioners will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4 at the courthouse in Emporium.

Lack of Snow Spells Postponement For the Cameron County Cardboard Classic

Lack of Snow Spells Postponement

The Cameron County Cardboard Classic and snow festival planned for Saturday January 30 postponed for the second week in a row due to lack of sufficient snow and ice thickness. Officials from Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and Emporium Country Club surveyed the location Thursday morning and determined the ice is too shallow for safe ice skating and the recent warm up has melted the snow on the hill to be used for the cardboard sled competition.
The new date is Saturday February 6 from 11am-4pm

Registration for the cardboard sled competition will take place 11am till noon, with competition beginning at noon. Sleds are to be made using cardboard, duct tape, glue and paper. Age groups: 8 and under, 9-12, 13-18 and adults will be judged on originality and the distance traveled by their creation. A two-person snowman building contest and creature building contest will also be held. In addition, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating are planned.

Anyone interested is asked to contact the chamber office at 814-486-4314.

QCare Cameron County

QCare Cameron County
 416 N. Broad Street
 Emporium, PA 15834
Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 5:30 pm
Closed Weekends & Holiday

QCare allows Penn Highlands Healthcare to provide fast, convenient care for patients in a private setting. The choice of QCare over the emergency department helps alleviate the wait times in the emergency department and allows the staff the time needed to care for true emergencies.

Our goal at QCare is to ensure that residents throughout the region have access to the health care services they need, when they need it.
QCare is an additional option for patients that can not be seen by their primary care physician or for patients that do not have a family doctor.

Do I need to make an appointment to visit QCare? No appointments are necessary. Walk right in during normal business hours.

QCare or Emergency Room? Whenever you or someone you love has sudden symptoms of an illness or injury, your first thought is getting to a medical facility.

But how do you decide which medical facility you should go to? There are two different places you can go when symptoms suddenly appear- the emergency room or QCare urgent care.

How do you decide which you should go to?
If it’s a life threatening injury or illness, go straight to the emergency room (which is sometimes best accomplished by calling 911). There is one conveniently located at each Penn Highlands Healthcare hospital. Open 24/7, this is definitely the right choice for any sudden, serious injury or illness.

When is it appropriate to visit QCare? With no appointment necessary, QCare centers can be a great option when you're seeking convenient medical services or treatments. We offer quick care for minor illnesses and injuries, such as: • Flu-like symptoms • Fever • Vomiting • Coughs, colds, sinus problems • Earaches • Sprains • Back pain • Rashes • Minor eye problems • Minor cuts and abrasions • Minor aches and pains • Bladder infections • Tick and insect bites Other Convenient Services • Sports physicals • Driver’s license physicals • Work and Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals (DOT at St Marys QCare ) *DOT physicals may have to be scheduled • Tetanus shots • Suture removal • Laboratory testing and X-rays

We do not perform annual checkups or physicals. For yearly preventive and wellness exams, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.

What do I need to bring with me when I visit QCare? When you visit QCare, please be sure to bring: • A form of identification • Your insurance card • A form of payment - We offer convenient payment options including cash, check, or credit card.
Insurance co-payments are due at time of service.

What insurance plans does QCare accept? Penn Highlands Healthcare QCares accept most major insurance. If you have questions about whether your visit will be covered, please contact your insurance company.

How will I be charged for my QCare visit? QCare is billed the same as a physician office visit. All co-pays and deductibles will apply and payment will be expected at the time of services. All physicals are prepaid at the time of visit.

Is there anything you cannot treat at QCare? There are times when it is not appropriate to visit QCare and you should instead seek emergency medical attention. These include: • Chest pain • Stroke • Heart attack • Severe abdominal pain • Major head injuries • Major trauma • Compound fracture (bone visible) • Shortness of Breath • Ingestion of poisons • Seizures • Dizziness • Severe burns • Shock • Snake bites • Uncontrollable bleeding If you think you are experiencing a life-threatening condition, call 911 or seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency department.

Does QCare treat children? Yes. QCare welcomes all patients over the age of one. Infants under the age of one should be seen in the Emergency Room.

CCHS Band Boosters

The Cameron County School District has the honor of hosting the District Band Festival this year.

The Festival will be held January 28-30. This is a huge undertaking with band students coming from all over our district and we will be requesting parents to volunteer for certain parts of the students stay. There will be letters coming home with our kids Friday to give information and give you a chance to pick where and when you would like to help.
If your child is one that forgets to give you papers, please ask them for it.

Penn Highlands Elk Welcomes New Provider to Emporium QCare

Penn Highlands Elk is pleased to welcome Mary Schimp, PA-C, to its medical staff. Ms. Schimp is seeing patients at the QCare Cameron County facility, located on North Broad Street in downtown Emporium. “I am excited to be working at QCare in Emporium, to help out within the community and to provide another option for healthcare,” said Schimp.

Ms. Schimp received both her bachelor’s degree and her master’s in physician assistant science from Gannon University. While there, she was on the dean’s list eight semesters. Ms. Schimp worked for two years in occupational health at Hanover Works. She worked with local employers to keep their staff members healthy and provided services like treating work-related injuries and providing physicals. During that time, she also worked for Hanover Medical Group’s Express Care, an urgent care center similar to the QCare clinics offered by Penn Highlands Healthcare. She served a patient population of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics in a walk-in setting. She managed illnesses and provided injections, wound care, splitting, suturing and gynecologic exams.

Most recently, Schimp was employed by the Olean General Hospital and worked in the emergency department. This experience has given Ms. Schimp a broad knowledge of the critical care environment.

No appointment is needed to visit QCare.
The office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
It is closed weekends and holidays.
QCare Cameron County also offers on-site laboratory, X-ray and physician therapy services.

Penn Highlands Community Pharmacy now open to the public

Penn Highlands Community Pharmacy now open to the public

The Penn Highlands Community Pharmacy, located in the DuBois Community Medical Building, 621 S. Main Street, DuBois, is now open to the public for both prescription and over-the-counter medication needs.

The “inside” pharmacy will be open for prescriptions and over-the-counter items from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, closed only on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Currently the drive-up window is open the same hours as the store. The window is available to drop off and pick up prescriptions and an announcement will be made when it becomes available for 24-hours per day service.

“We are excited that the expanded features of our community pharmacy are expanding,” Eric Wolfgang, PharmD, director of the Community Pharmacy said. “Once fully-operational, we will be providing services that you don’t normally find anywhere in our region.”

Wolfgang said that they hope to have the 24-hour services available to the public sometime this spring.

“One of the benefits of having our pharmacy affiliated with Penn Highlands DuBois is that the pharmacists are here working at the community pharmacy and also filling orders for patients at the hospital, “Wolfgang added.” That means, in the near future, we will be able to offer continuous access for those emergency prescriptions any day, anytime.”

This is also important since the pharmacy is located adjacent to QCare DuBois, the health system’s new urgent/walk-in clinic and across the street from the Penn Highlands DuBois Emergency Department.

The new pharmacy also offers state-of-the-art mixing and compounding facilities that allow the pharmacists to mix complex drugs like chemotherapy and other IV infusion medicines for rheumatology. This will help save the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

The pharmacy has been available for the last few months to fill Penn Highland’s employee prescriptions while general customer access has been limited due to the finalization of computer and insurance programs.

Now the staff and the systems are complete and ready to serve the general public. The pharmacy also has typical over-the-counter products that would be found at most full-service pharmacies.

“We have a large selection of over-the-counter medicines, as well as other products to treat most illnesses and injuries,” Wolfgang said. “Everything from canes and walkers to diabetic testing supplies and cough drops can be found on our shelves. We believe our convenient location will also make us a favorite for anyone using the QCare or a Penn Highlands DuBois physician.”

Wolfgang also said that existing patients of Penn Highland’s physicians will also find an additional incentive to using the Penn Highlands Community Pharmacy. Penn Highlands participates in a government discount prescription program that is available to all qualified patients.

“We encourage patients to take advantage of the 340b prescription program available to those using qualified Penn Highlands providers,” Wolfgang said. “This program may save you money on all of your prescriptions. Please feel free to contact the pharmacy staff at 814-375-6165 for a consultation to see whether you can save money by using the Penn Highlands Community Pharmacy.”

CC’s Sestina to miss rest of Bucknell season with injury

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Some tough news out of Bucknell University for Cameron County graduate Nate Sestina.

Sestina, who was just starting to come on for the Bison basketball team, is done for the season with a shoulder injury.

“I have a torn labrum and a torn ligament,” Sestina said in a text message to D9Sports.com. “I have surgery next Tuesday (Jan. 19).”

Sestina, the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com Co-Player of the Year last year, played in four games for Bucknell this season averaging 3.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game before the injury ended his season. He may be eligible for a medical redshirt.

“It’s more than likely,” Sestina said when asked about a medical redshirt. “But I’m not sure yet.”

The 6-foot-8, 247-pound freshman was starting to play well for the Bison before the injury and had a season-high 10 points in 16 minutes vs. Fairfield Dec. 27.

“He’s done well,” Bucknell first-year head coach Nathan Davis said. “He showed flashes early. It was unfortunate he got hurt when he did because he was really playing well.”

Sestina said going from District 9 to NCAA Division I basketball in the Patriot League was an adjustment.

“In high school, I was always bigger than the people we played,” Sestina said. “When I came here, I knew I wasn’t going to be the biggest guy and I was going to have to adjust and play in a system. In high school, I could freelance and get away with it. In college, I’m not the best player. I had to adjust to defend guys quicker than me and not just rely on my height to block shots. Learning how to play defense has been the biggest adjustment as has playing in a system on offense and not just catching the ball and doing my thing.”

Davis said Sestina has natural athletic ability which is a plus for him at the Division I level.

“He is big, strong and athletic but he has really good footwork too,” Davis said. “He’s comfortable playing the perimeter and under the basket.

“Like any high school kid, defense is much different at this level. Offensively, he also needs to work on his back to the basket more and shooting while moving.”

Despite not always seeing the best competition while in high school, Sestina did have some advantages when it came to playing at the next level not the least of which was having an older brother, Andrew, playing college basketball at the Division III level at Allegheny College.

“Because of Andrew playing college basketball, I had an idea of how different it is,” Sestina said.

While Sestina wasn’t a Davis recruit, the coach was hired after Sestina committed to Bucknell, he said Sestina is a perfect fit for the system he would like the Bison to play.

“As a coach, you have to fit your system to your players,” Davis said. “But as to what I would like to do, Nathan is a perfect fit. He can play outside and he can play inside. He can do just about anything you want to do, and he can be as good as he wants to be. It’s up to him.”

Sestina joins a growing list of District 9 boys’ basketball players playing at the next level, a list that is helping to change the look of basketball in D9 and includes Elk County Catholic’s Ryan Seelye and Smethport’s Zach Smith at Pitt in Division I as well as Johnsonburg’s Cameron Grumley, Clarion’s Roland Shannonhouse and Clarion-Limestone’s R.J. Laugand at Clarion in Division II.

“I think it shows what District 9 basketball is about,” Sestina said. “Especially guys like Cameron and Cole (Peterson) at Johnsonburg. Who would have thought Johnsonburg or Ridgway would be in the final four or the state championship game? There is incredible athleticism and heart in District 9. You look at Zach Smith. I played AAU ball with him. He is one of the smartest if not the smartest player I have every played with, and he helped Smethport beat Clairton when he was in high school. It’s all about who want to win and work harder in the gym. I think District 9 has been overlooked as to who is athletic or not. But Cole (Peterson) is dominating at St. Bonaventure in baseball. Everyone thinks because we we come from our athletics and talent isn’t the best. We have a lot of small schools, places like smethport where they are an hour from anywhere just to get to a shopping mall. Places like Johnsonburg, St. Marys, Emporium – Elk County Catholic has produced some great players. We didn’t come from big arra, but with how hard the guys want to work it has led to very successful teams.”

Kunes steps down as Cameron County football coach

EMPORIUM, Pa. – Mike Kunes announced Wednesday that he was stepping down as the Cameron County head football coach after three years as the head coach.

“I have accepted a PE (physical education) position at my Alma Mater, St. Marys Area School District,” Kunes wrote in a Facebook post. “It was a very bittersweet day for me turning in my letter of resignation and explaining to my team that I would not be their coach next season. I truly hope that as I leave Cameron County School District and the Red Raider football program that I left it better than I found it four years ago. I truly appreciate the time I spent at CCHS and the people I spent that time with. I want to thank everyone who has helped me along this path. It’s with a heavy hear that I say this for the last time as the head coach of the Red Raiders. Go BIG RED!”
