Rain Damages Areas In Cameron County

Cameron County received over 6 inches of rain yesterday. Many areas in the county were overwhelmed by the downpour of rain. Small streams jumped the creek beds and some roads were closed for a time. Many reported water in their basements and the Emporium Fire Department was busy helping out residents throughout the county. These photos are snapshots of some water damage on the Old West Creek Road, and right outside of Emporium.

Find Treasure on West Creek Rails to Trails

Find Treasure on West Creek Rails to Trails

A husband and wife team from Elk County have adopted the West Creek Rails to Trails and so far have placed 23 geocaches along a 3 mile section of the trail. The gpscoordinates for the hiding places can be found at www.geocaching.com under the name WCRT.

Michael Groll credits his wife, Kimberly with coming up with the idea. Between the two of them, they have 7 years traveling the United States and five countries uncovering 2300 caches. Many times in the last year they traveled through Emporium. “Every time we drove past the new Rails to Trails on our way to get caches, she would look over at it and ask why there aren't any caches there. Then late last year, she made the decision that we are going to do this trail,” said Groll.

Right now the caches are confined to a three mile section from Moore Hill Road heading east toward Emporium. Plans are in the work for another Geocache team to expand the caches west to Truman.

The group hopes to have others place caches throughout the planned 18 mile trail connecting St Marys and Emporium.Groll says many local geocache hunters have found the caches, but recently the trail is attracting geocache enthusiasts from outside of the region. Geocaching is an activity enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. Groll credits the hobby with finding his bride. “ I met my wife through Geocaching and our wedding was even published as a geocaching event. For some, this hobby comes and goes. But for myself, I'm still enjoying every adventure and at this point, I couldn't imagine geocaching not being part of my life.”

Police Car Crashes After Chase Along Mountain Road In Shippen Township

http://www.wearecentralpa.com/news/police-car-crashes-after-chase-along-mountain-road
By Alex Belser | abelser@wtajtv.com

""Police say an officer in Cameron County lost control of his patrol car while trying to call into dispatch.

He wanted to tell them he was in the middle of a chase, and had just crossed outside his jurisdiction.

It happened on Whittimore Road, just outside of Emporium. The chief says a state police car was also right behind him.

Police say they spotted the suspect, and tried to pull him over, when instead he drove away and led police on a chase along a twisting, mountainous road to get away.

The police chief says he noticed Michael Pearson, 33, Emporium, was driving even though he has a suspended license and has been repeatedly caught driving anyway.

He says he notified Officer Patrick Straub. Police say Straub saw the SUV on S. Broad Street, but as he made a U-turn, and turned on his emergency lights, Pearson started to speed away.

"The person took off and went up over the mountain. The officer followed and went to radio, and as he did, didn't negotiate the turn and lost it and went into the ditch," says Chief Dave Merritt.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. The criminal complaint says that during the half-mile chase, speeds were up to 59 miles an hour.

"That was at the first first switchback in the road and the officer was unfamiliar with the road and the area up there," says Merritt.

The borough manager says he's had the chief contact their insurance company to get the bumper repaired and luckily the officer was okay.

"I took my own vehicle and was there in a matter of moments after the wreck to check on the officer and the officer was fine, was wearing a seatbelt, and was not harmed at all," says Merritt.

Pearson's neighbors questioned the necessity of a chase.

"I think sometimes it's foolish, especially when you're going up this mountain, chasing somebody," says resident Franklin Schuckers.

"If it's something really really super bad, I think yeah, they may have to engage in a chase, but if they don't have to, radios work much better. They can radio ahead," says resident Kent Davis.

Police say Pearson was arraigned the next day.

"Listen, they make cars every day of the week. Nobody was hurt. That's the main ingredient," says Mark Ramsey, who towed the car.

Pearson is facing charges including eluding a police officer and driving without a license. He was released on $10,000 unsecured bail. """

Historical Society to Reprint “Reflections of Cameron County"

Historical Society to Reprint “Reflections of Cameron County"

The Cameron County Historical Society has contracted with a Pennsylvania publishing company to reprint "Reflections of Cameron County" created in 1994 that shows a pictorially Cameron County from its beginning to recent times.

This amazing book packed full of photos that were shared by local residents and some from the files of the Cameron County Historical Society, is an extremely rare book, only 100 were sold at the time.

Internet searches for the book continual yield no results. It's a pictorial research tool we at the Historical Society often use when determining how things looked at a certain moment in time.

Unfortunately we have one copy and had no means to reproduce it without destroying it for reprint. Technology today has given us the opportunity to make it available once again to the general public

"Reflections" is a treasure trove of 135 pages with over 400 photos that came from Cameron Coounty residents, both present and past including some from the Cameron County Historical Society files. These images signify a wide range of the houses, businesses, and industry that once lined our streets, some still in existence today. How about the "old pedestrian tunnel" that was once under the railroad at the end of south Popular Street that permitted employees access to Sylvania without going over the tracks, that photo is in the book and so much more.

This is a book that you will not want to sit down and look through alone. It demands family and friends who will want to reminisce. It's the perfect gift to take to a reunion, family gathering or a party it will become the highlight of the event and everyone will want a copy to.

Pre-orders only are being accepted for “Reflections of Cameron County” as the Historical Society must meet a minimum threshold in order to have the book printed.

The final date to order will be October 31, 2015, and the Historical Society plans to have the books shipped in December, in time to offer as a unique Christmas gift for any local history buff.

The book will cost $30 the same it did over 20 years ago and shipping to any US location is available for an additional $5. Checks can be made out to the Cameron County Historical Society and sent to PO Box 433; Emporium, PA 15834.
