John F. "Mickey" McManigle

John F. "Mickey" McManigle, 89, of 166 West Fourth Street, Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands DuBois, DuBois, PA on Sunday (July 19, 2015) night following a brief illness.

Mickey was born August 9, 1925 at the family home on West 6th Street, Emporium, PA. He was the second of eight children of the late John F. and Mariam Cooper McManigle. He was a life long Emporium resident who cherished his family and friends.

In 1945 he met Doris Pollard, a young waitress at the Cabin Kitchen. Doris became the love of his life and on April 1, 1950 they were married in the First Presbyterian Church, Emporium. They often joked that they married on April Fool’s day . . . just in case. They celebrated their 58th anniversary prior to her passing in 2008.

Mickey graduated from Emporium High School in 1943. He served with the US Army during the Korean War.

Mickey worked at Sylvania for over 42 years as a journeyman (master) tool and die maker. He took great pride in building machines used in the production of picture tubes and other Sylvania products during the height of Sylvania’s popularity.

He worked as manager & president at Emporium Water Company. One of his proudest achievements was overseeing the design and construction of the filtration plant. For over 25 years he also served as the president of Cameron Land Development.

Mickey & Doris were charter members of the Emporium Country Club. Mickey was proud of Doris’s achievements, including 19 Club Championships, and was always eager to regale family and friends with the story of his own ‘march’ to the 1965 Fourth Flight Championship!

Mickey & Doris were winter residents of Cape Canaveral, Florida for over 25 years. They lived in the Villages of Seaport where they became life long friends with fellow ‘snow birds’ from around the United States and Canada. Mickey & Doris often shared how significantly these relationships enriched their lives. Mickey particularly enjoyed the daily 3-mile walk around the jetty and evening ‘happy hour’ with friends. In addition, Mickey was an ardent supporter of Cocoa Beach high school basketball, highlighted by travelling to a Cocoa playoff game on the team charter!

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Emporium where he served as Trustee, Deacon & Financial Secretary. He was also an active member of the Cape Canaveral Christ Lutheran Church for over 20 years.

Mickey was a life member of the American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, a 50-year member of the Emporium Lodge #382, F.and A.M. & the Coudersport Consistory, and member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368. Mickey was an avid outdoorsman and member of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club. He was also a member of the Cameron County Historical Society.

He was a co-founder of the Emporium HOOP Club in Emporium where he served the organization as officer in many capacities. Years ago he was a Little League Baseball Manager and Boy Scouts of America Troop 52 Committeeman.
