Cameron County Farmers Market Update

Cameron County Farmers Market Update

 Thanks, Cameron County, for the very enthusiastic response to the Farmers Market!

We've had quite a few potential vendors approach us already and we're excited for the quality and variety of goods that they have to offer that will make this market the talk of the county!
For those of you wishing to sell baked or canned goods but don't have the kitchen facilities (or the required license) to do this at home, Lindsey from the Aroma Cafe has very generously offered to rent out their kitchens, for a nominal fee, to anyone interested.
Please message her directly for more information. Thanks Lindsey!

 What is the Cameron County Farmers Market?
A place for our community to gather to buy and sell fresh produce, local artisan crafts, home-made baked goods and more. Opening officially in 2023 but will be popping up on select weekends this year to give you all a taste of what's to come.

 Message us or email us at CCfarmersmarketPA@gmail.com to find out how to be a part of this exciting new venture coming to Cameron County soon!

Library Summer Reading Program Starting Soon

Library Summer Reading Program Starting Soon

This year’s theme explores vast oceans Tuesday, May 31, 2022 The 2022 Summer Reading Theme is Oceans of Possibilities and the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library has lots of great themed activities planned for this year!

The Library will have lots of fun take-home crafts and activities, and a big end-of-program party in August with a special guest performer.

Registration can be completed online beginning June 1, 2022 by going to barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org and locating the Summer Reading program under our “Library Programs” tab. Parents and guardians, along with their children can also come in and register for the Summer Reading Program in person anytime during the library’s regular service hours between June 1 and June 25.

 This year, we’re starting off the program with a very special kickoff event: Aquatic Adventures Story and Craft session. Library clerk, Mr. Matt will read a themed story followed by a craft session, snack, and maybe more! This will be held on Saturday June 21, from 1-2 pm. Those interested do not need to register separately for this event.

The reading portion of the Program runs for the 5-week period from Monday June 27, through Saturday, July 30. This year the reading logs must be returned by August 5.

 Reading requirements are simple and every effort is made to adjust to a family's summer schedule of vacations and other summer events. Students along with their parents or guardians set their own reading goals as to the number of books they will read each week during the Summer Reading Program.

Those participating can visit the library for their reading logs at any time. Encouraging youngsters to read over their summer vacation is the aim of the Summer Reading Program. There is no contest to see who can read the greatest number of books. EVERYONE who completes the Summer Program and fulfills their reading goals will be invited to a special party (along with some great surprises) at the conclusion of the Program.

For more details, or to register find the “Library Programs” tab at www.barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org or call the library at 814-486-8011.

PUC Alerts Consumers of June 1 Price Changes for Electric Generation

 Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) sent a notice informing PA residents that their electric utility company was planning to raise rates on June 1, 2022.
 As that date approaches, Pennsylvania residents should be aware that they could see their electric bills increase anywhere from six to forty-five percent starting next month.

 Beginning June 1, electric distribution companies report the following changes in their PTCs for residential customers:
 Citizens’ Electric, up from 7.3995 cents to 9.3667 cents per kWh (26.6%);
Met-Ed, up from 6.832 cents to 7.936 cents per kWh (16.1%);
Penelec, up from 6.232 cents to 8.443 cents per kWh (35.4%);
Penn Power, up from 7.082 cents to 8.694 cents per kWh (22.7%);
PPL, up from 8.941 cents to 12.366 cents per kWh (38.3%);
Wellsboro Electric, up from 7.7569 cents to 9.592 cents per kWh (23.7%);
West Penn Power, up from 5.667 cents to 8.198 cents per kWh (44.6%);

 *Note: Energy price changes for several utilities, including Duquesne Light, PECO and Pike County Light & Power, are still being calculated but are expected to rise.
 Final prices for those utilities will be available later in May.

PA Wilds Experiments with Ways to Attract, Keep Remote Workers

Do you know anyone interested in moving back to the PA Wilds?

PA Wilds Experiments with Ways to Attract, Keep Remote Workers

Because of the COVID-19 lockdowns, remote working has become a desire by many within or looking to enter the workforce.

A new program started by the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, entitled "The Wilds Are Working: A Remote Lifestyle Experience,"   seeks to capitalize on that desire by many workers, luring them to rural areas of Pennsylvania.

According to the PA Wilds Center, the Wilds Are Working campaign seeks to empower workers to try out living, working and giving in the PA Wilds communities for 2-4 weeks with the hope that some of those participants will decide to work in the region full-time.

Modeled after case studies emerging from across Appalachia and the nation, this program is one of many that rural communities are implementing to incentivize and stimulate revitalization. Building on the movement, the Rural Outdoor Investment (ROI) Act looks to allocate $50 million annually to fund infrastructure improvements and similar marketing campaigns to help towns across the country plan and build recreation-based economies. These so-called “Zoom towns” are popping up around the nation, with some communities providing workers with $10,000 to relocate there for one year.

One town participating in the PA Wilds Center program is McKean County’s Borough of Kane. Kane, a town of 3,500 on the edge of the Allegheny National Forest, and Bellefonte, a town of 6,276 about 10 miles north of Penn State, were chosen as the pilots for the program.

Kane is still accepting applications for its remote working residency, which will run from
Sept. 14 to Oct. 14.

Sylvan Heritage Council 2022 Scholarship Recipients

Sylvan Heritage Council

 The recipients of this year’s Sylvan Heritage Council scholarships are Brennan Bure and Natalie Zucal.

 In addition to our own scholarship funds, Natalie’s scholarship was also funded in part by a donation from friends of Joan Beaton Scott, CCHS Class of 1964. When asking us to administer their memorial donation, the letter we received from Joan’s family friends said this: Joan was raised in Emporium and was a graduate of CCHS in the class of 1964. Although she moved to Buffalo and lived there for many years as she raised her family, she always maintained strong ties to friends and family in your area. She was very proud of her northcentral Pennsylvania roots and the wonderful experience she had being raised in Emporium and wanted everyone here to know how much your community mattered to her.

 Congratulations to Natalie and Brennan and to the entire graduating class of 2022!!

The Little Museum - Perfect Place to Visit in Cameron County!

The Little Museum is located on Rt 120 about 9 miles South of Emporium in the village of Sterling Run. PA 15832

Sharing this article that is posted in the Cameron County Echo

One of Cameron County's best treasures. I highly encourage everyone to visit this season!

Come Visit Us at the Little Museum
Dear Editor,

The Little Museum in Sterling Run doors are opening for the season Saturday May28, 2022 from 1-4 PM. We have loads of improvements and updates over the past year, along with thousands of things inside for you to see. There is something for everyone of all ages.

 Upon viewing the museum from the outside, you will notice the beautiful landscaping we had done last season. In addition to the landscaping while celebrating the museum's 50th anniversary last summer was the placement of a time capsule to be opened in 2071 honoring the museum's 100th anniversary.

 As you walk down the walkway you will notice the refurbished flagpole with its new US flag donated by our local VFW. We mention this because those of us who attended the school actually raised, lowered and folded the flag every day. It was part of our education. If you don't know the meaning behind the way we fold the American Flag may we suggest you check it out in honor of this Memorial Day.

When you enter the front of the building you will make another discovery the new handrails recently installed by our President John Kautz, which have an historic background. The rails are original from the old Sylvania building, and imbedded within them are golden symbols depicting Sylvania. A real nice historical enhancement. As you enter the inside you will smell the fresh scent of a thorough cleaning a few weeks back by your dedicated Board of Directors. We have even added some new items that have been recently donated that you must see.

During the past two years since the onset of covid we have a huge influx of donations. Obviously, those who were housebound decided to clean out their closets etc. and discovered some treasures they wanted to share. We love it all, but are actually overwhelmed with keeping up, so much so that this year, we must ask for your help!

 Many of us who volunteer at the History Center in Emporium and the Museum during the summer months just can't be two places at one time and need help especially this year to help man the Museum. We would like to remain open 3 days week like in the past on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 1-4 PM.

 It's easy enough to do and a lot of fun. You not only get to meet some great visitors you get the chance to make some great discoveries yourself of our counties past. All we ask as you donate 3 hours one time this summer to help share our amazing history with others.

 For those of you who live here and have never been to the museum this is the time to visit and or volunteer. Funny thing the majority of our visitors are from outside the area is it time for the locals come check us out.

We can be contacted by calling 814-486-0334 and leave a message. E-mail historycenter1@windstream.net, or check us out on Facebook. Better yet if you see one of the board members let them know.

 All the best to our entire community this summer,

Cameron County Historical Society Board of Directors, John Kautz, Susan Hoy, Judy Armanini, Wendy Davis, Sandy Ford, Tom Gavolock, Bernie Oswald, Inez Jordan, Pat Martin, and Dianna Ball Museum Volunteer Coordinator.
