Recognizing Jean Tesauro, the PAGame Commission’s First Female Deputy Game Protector.

Pennsylvania Game Commission
As Women’s History Month concludes, join us in recognizing Jean Tesauro, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s first female Deputy Game Protector.

At age 16, Jean harvested her first deer, but she couldn’t tag it because another hunter intentionally shot and took it. After that day in the woods, Jean wanted to become a Deputy Game Protector to help enforce game laws and to protect wildlife.

In 1976, Jean became a deputy and served in Cameron County with Game Protector Norm Erickson. “My biggest accomplishment was working to help enforce game laws, making sure everyone followed the rules and were safe,” Jean recounts. “I met many wonderful hunters. Once, I assisted with a hunter being shot in mistake for game and that image has never left me.”

Please join us in thanking Jean for her service to Pennsylvania residents and wildlife.
Sharing article & photo from the Pennsylvania Game Commission

I couldn't think of a better or more deserving person than Jean!

NEW BIKING TRAILS PLANNED FOR CONSERVED STERLING RUN PROPERTY

NEW BIKING TRAILS PLANNED FOR CONSERVED STERLING RUN PROPERTY
Increased Use in 2021 Prompts DCNR to Expand Recreational Access on Property with Conservation Easement

Emporium, Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is developing 20- 30 miles of new biking trails in Cameron County, Pennsylvania, of which at least 10 miles are planned on Sterling Run, the conservation and public access easement donated to the state by The Lyme Timber Company as part of a 2018 financing package with PENNVEST. Completion of approximately 15 miles of trail is expected later this year, allowing for winter fat tire biking and in time for widespread use in 2023.

The new bike trails serve to mitigate ongoing safety incidents between hikers, equestrian riders, and bicyclist on the Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail near Benezette. Marshall Farm Road, adjacent to the immediate northeast of Sterling Run, will provide year-round access to both the new biking trails and cross-country ski trails also under development for winter recreational enthusiasts. Within the Sterling Run property, trail designers are currently laying out the new trails, taking into consideration the existing topography and new infrastructure needs.

The design of outdoor recreational amenities must consider compatibility among different uses, and dedicated biking trails will improve users’ safety and enjoyment. In addition, trail designers look to maximize the use of existing trails by connecting them with new assets, creating a much larger network and options for users. The Sterling Run property presents unique opportunities to connect existing trails and provide dedicated biking amenities, while remaining a working forest with the commensurate economic benefits to the community.

The biking trails will be the latest addition to the 9,152-acre Sterling Run property. In 2018, affiliates of The Lyme Timber Company (Lyme) donated a conservation and public access easement to Pennsylvania as part of a financing transaction with PENNVEST. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) holds the conservation and public access easement and is responsible for managing access opportunities.

While the property remains in private ownership, the easement secures permanent recreational access for the public. Joe Kellert, DCNR Elk State Forest, district forester, said “The Sterling Run Easement is an example of cooperative collaboration at work for the benefit of both conservation and public enjoyment. It’s a testament of what can be accomplished when the respective strengths and disciplines of public and private entities are leveraged and put into action.” Under the conservation and public access easement, the lands are open for public recreation for uses very similar to state forests but stay in private ownership with the associated economic and taxing benefits to the local community.

Three Rivers Forest Management, a division of Lyme, manages the Sterling Run property, part of Lyme Timber’s 160,000- acre timberland holdings in northwest PA and western New York.

The Sterling Run lands have enjoyed widespread public use. Lyme has been working cooperatively with The Keystone Elk County Alliance to plant high quality forage plots, including clover, timothy, and bromegrass, that elk, deer, and turkey prefer. While several main access roads are open year-round subject to road conditions, many gates were opened for deer season last fall to help hunters access the entire property. This tract is also enrolled in the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) through the Pennsylvania Game Commission with a total of 167 tags available each year. Maps and additional information are available at ThreeRiversForest.com/leasing.

DCNR has been actively working to improve conditions for public access on the Sterling Run Parcel. In the past year, three miles of road have been resurfaced with Driving Surface Aggregate. Planning has begun for a parking area along May Hollow Road at the intersection of Bender and Bobolink Lanes. Preliminary designs are also underway to replace two large culverts which carry Bender Run and Portable Run.

Ben Porkolab , Conservation Education Coordinator, Keystone Elk Country Alliance, said “Being an avid outdoorsman, and enjoying hunting, fishing, trapping, and hiking with my family, I am overjoyed that this property that has been private in the past is now open to the public to enjoy. This immense wild area has many diverse habitats and is teaming with a variety of wildlife species.”

Cameron Co. Fair History

Keystone Park was the first known location of the Cameron County Fair. Keystone Park is where GKN Sinter Metals and Embassy Sintered Metals are located on Airport Road and where the West Creek branch now flows. According to History of Cameron County (1991edition), the first fair was held around 1901. The fair was under the sponsorship of the Cameron County Agricultural Association. The fair was held each September until 1917. The start of the world War I and a severe flu epidemic put a halt to the fair that year.

The Cameron County Fair formed an association in 1967 as a committee of the Emporium Jaycees. The fair was held at the Pine Street Field. This fair worked in close partnership with the 4H program. After the field was sold in 1970 to Motor Coils a new location was pursued.

Mr. Henry Zimmer, a jaysee, made an offer to allow the fair to use a piece of land that had been the previous location of the Smokeless Powder and Picric Acid Plant. Paul Abriatis, another jaysee, loaned the fair committee bulldozers to prepare the land.

After many years of work the fair has grown into a lush green area with a concession stand, 4H building, exhibition hall, stage, animal display barn, and a 160 foot open front exhibit area. The largest exhibit hall(Beaver Hall) was named after fair director, Beaver Williams. The Beaver Hall has been begun renovation projects in the past few years by first updating the kitchen, adding a large new window and soon replacing the ceiling tiles in the main floor area. Beaver Hall is frequently rented out for wedding receptions and family reunions.

The fair has been a good source a family entertainment and a place to exhibit great works of skillful craft and the fruits of agricultural labors.

Super Saturday Update

Greetings Community Members,

Last year, the Cameron County Project hosted a “Super Saturday” event in response to interviews with residents who fondly reminisced on the county’s famous “Super Weekend” and longed for some kind of revival. Due to the positive feedback and success of the 2021 event, planning for 2022 has begun.

We welcome the participation and/or contribution from merchants, restaurants, clubs, and other organizations. We will be making space and doing advertising for all involved, again this year. There are plenty of ways to get involved in this community-wide celebration, so if you have something in mind, let us know by May 27th!

Creekside Sports Bar and Event Center Business Update

Creekside Sports Bar and Event Center
13285 PA-120
Emporium, PA. 15834

Just an update. We are still in the process of transferring the liquor license and scheduling a closing on the building. Once that is complete, we will shut down for no more than 14 days to clean, rearrange and refresh the place.
We will keep everyone informed so you know when our Grand Opening is.

As for the bowling alley, we will be working this summer on transforming it into an event center for parties, wedding receptions, family reunions, funeral dinners and any other event you can think of. It will have a stage area for performances like bands, dancers, bridal party, etc.

As of now, but not set in stone yet, we will be open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 4pm to 2am. Once we get opened, we will look at other days based on need, and we can always open for special events.

For those who couldn't attend the meet n greet, the new owners and Roger and Barbara Hull.
They live in the Dubois area, have 3 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
They have owned multiple businesses to include restaurants and currently have an even center in Clearfield. The event center will seat approx 250-300 people.
We will start a waiting list for those who want to be the first to look at it and reserve their date.
It should be fully operational by the end of this year.
Keep checking back here for more updates and pics of the changes.
Thank you all and hope to see you.

Note: The Creekside Sports Bar & Even Center is at the location of the former bowling alley and most recently Mack's Rhythm & Blues Sports Bar

David A. Hockey

David A. Hockey, 60, of West Fourth Street, Emporium, PA formerly of Rochester and Watertown, NY and Conneaut, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday evening at his residence with his family by his side (March 24, 2022). He was born July 29, 1961 in Rochester, New York a son of Betty Wilson Hockey, Emporium and the late Harold Hockey. On June 2, 1984 in Rochester, NY he married Mary Ann F. DeFilippo Hockey, who survives him.

Dave was a graduate of Spencerport High School, in NY, class of 1979.

Dave was a lifelong follower of Jesus, having accepted Him into his heart at age four. He was an accomplished musician, having taught himself guitar, he played his entire life. He used his musical talents to minister to others, through Stand Strong Worship Band and Teen Challenge. He ministered at many family camps as a youth pastor and worship leader.

Dave was a man of many talents. His first job was with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department garage. He also worked for V.J. Stanley, Key Bank, Buckpitt and Co., Lifetime Assistance, Contact Technologies, Northwest Bank and Northern Tier.

Dave’s true calling was as a pastor, and he was ordained through Calvary Ministries Inc., International in 2003. He went on to Pastor at Watertown Free Methodist Church, Watertown, NY, Conneaut FMC, Conneaut, Ohio, Girard FMC, Girard, PA, Beacon of Light Ministry Center, Watertown NY, Grace Covenant Church, Rochester, NY, Stand Strong Christian Ministry Center, Rochester, NY, and finally at Cameron County Christian Center, in Emporium.

In addition to his mother and wife David is survived by two daughters, Ada D. Hockey, and Nicole J. Hockey, Emporium; two sisters, Karen Schultz (William), Zion, IL; Linda Salatino, Rochester, NY.and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Hockey.

Dave felt he and MaryAnn’s greatest accomplishment was the completing of their family, by adopting his two daughters, after faithfully praying for children for the first 28 years of their marriage. He truly loved being a father.

Through his ministry, Dave also gained an incredibly large group of youths, who are now adults, that viewed him as a brother and father figure. He was responsible for leading many of them to Christ.

EHS/CCHS Alumni Banquet is on for May 28th.

There is no charge for members of the Classes of 2022, 2021 and 2020 to attend the banquet this year. They are our guests.

EHS/CCHS Alumni Banquet is on for May 28th.

I know a lot of you are on FB but you don’t get the Echo. The banquet will start at 600 pm.
The cost is $25 for each person and/or your guest.
This covers the cost of the dinner and association dues, as well as supports the $1,000 scholarship we give to a graduating senior.

An application will soon be posted in the Echo.

We are in need of expanding our committee in order to continue holding this event.
I know some of you have offered to help. The problem is a lot of don’t live in Emporium.
We need MORE locals to come forward in order for this banquet to continue in the years ahead.
