Nearby Calla’s Cafe Closing August 7th

Calla’s Cafe

With long consideration and a heavy heart, the Calla’s made a decision to close Calla’s Cafe and Fine Food on August 7th. Several factors were present and unavoidable; one being the lack of employees. Unfortunately, our country is seeing many favorite stores, restaurants, clubs, etc. shut their doors or limit their hours due to excess work and not enough help. As many people know, the Calla’s have opened a second restaurant, The Wildwoods Bar & Grill in St. Marys, and it is quite trying to fill working time slots for both places. The ideal plan would be to keep both locations open and have an abundance of employees, customers, and good times. It just cannot be done at this time.

The Calla’s want to thank the community and surrounding communities for such amazing patronage. So many positive reviews, constructive criticism, and influential comments have been given over the years, and it’s been a pleasure serving you all. We couldn’t have established not one, but two restaurants without such great backing.

Please understand that any Calla’s Cafe gift cards will be accepted at Wildwoods Bar & Grill, which is just a few miles into town (no expiration date ever).

Also, the cafe has some “customer-favorite entree options”, which the Wildwoods menu will soon include. We want to please as many palates as possible! The Calla’s hope to see you in the future at The Wildwoods. A decision like this sure does make a company humble; knowing that all will work out in time. Again thank you!

Author Book Reading & Signing - Betty Riegel

Pictured is a photo of the cover of “Up in the Air”.
The author, Betty Riegel will be visiting the Barbara Moscato Brown Library for a reading and signing of her book on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

British-born author, Betty Riegel will be at the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library on Saturday, August 12 from 1-3 p.m. The author of “Up in the Air: The Real Story of Life Aboard the World's Most Glamorous Airline” will be reading an excerpt from her book and signing special edition copies.

After responding to an ad in the local newspaper, [Betty] secured herself an interview for the Pan Am training program and at just twenty-two years old was selected from thousands of eager young British women to begin a career that would change the course of her life. Betty said goodbye to everything she knew and boarded a plane to New York, a city full of noise, towering skyscrapers, and promise. Under the watchful eye of her “housemother,” Dottie, Betty mastered the art of being the perfect Pan Am stewardess—everything from faultless etiquette, geography, and safety to seamless makeup application, charming influential passengers, and preparing five-course Parisian cuisine at 37,000 feet.

But no amount of training could have prepared her for the roller coaster of life in the air… UP IN THE AIR charts the grueling yet fabulous life aboard the most iconic airline there has ever been and how a young woman from Essex opened her eyes to the world and lived her dream.

Betty will be joined by her husband, Emporium native, Kent Riegel. She will read an anecdote from her book and then be available to chat and answer questions.

Special edition signed copies of the book will be available for sale during the event at $20 each. The special edition includes full color photos from her time aboard PanAM. A copy of the book is also currently available for checkout at the library.

Registration is not necessary. For more information, contact library staff at 814-486-8011 or visit www.barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org.

Pictured are Betty & Kent Riegel who will be at the library Thursday August 12, 2021 from 1-3 pm as Betty shares an anecdote from her recent book “Up in the Air”. Kent is an Emporium native and Betty is originally from England.

Donations for the Raider Closet

Cameron County School District

The start of the 2021-2022 school year is just around the corner. While many folks will begin shopping for back-to-school clothes, shoes, backpacks, etc., we have some students who won’t have that opportunity. This is one way the RAIDER CLOSET can be of assistance. One of the most frequently requested items from our students is NEW SHOES. To that end, if you are so inclined to help our students in this way, new shoes can be donated by simply dropping them off at the Main Office of your child’s school.

If you would prefer to make a financial donation to support this effort, checks can be made out to Cameron County School District and mailed to: Carl Mitchell, Business Manager at 601 Woodland Avenue, Emporium, PA 15834. Please note that the donation is for the RAIDER CLOSET. These funds will be used to purchase shoes and other requested items to help support our students.

Library Story Hour is Back With Amazing Animals

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library welcomed back some of our littlest patrons Monday, July 19 to our morning Story Hour program at the 3rd Street Playground. The program is held every Monday at 10 a.m. This week, they read a silly book called Amazing Animals, made a silhouette of their favorite wild animal, and had a snack. These sessions are open to all children 0-5, but sign up is required to attend. Each session will consist of a story, activity and snack. Sign up online now by going to barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org and scrolling to Story Hour under Library Programs, or stop by the library to complete a sign up form. You only have to register once to attend all sessions. There is an option to let us know if you won’t be making it every week. The sign up just allows staff to ensure there is enough craft materials, snacks and adult supervision at each session. Parents of children under 3 will need to remain with their child for the entire program. For additional information please visit the library’s website, or call the library at 814-486-8011.

Johnsonburg Grad Shuey Makes the Cut for the Javelin at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

How awesome is this!

From Ram to Olympian: Johnsonburg Grad Shuey Makes the Cut for the Javelin at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Article by by Chris RossettiJune 30, 2021 https://d9and10sports.com

MONACO – Johnsonburg’s Michael Shuey is officially headed to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics being held July 24 through Aug. 8, 2021 (because of the time difference and the International Dateline the games actually run July 23 through Aug. 7 in the United States)

Shuey qualified through the World Rankings quota system after finishing second at the U.S. Olympic trials in Oregon earlier in June 2021 but failing to throw an Olympic Qualifying standard distance.

https://www.worldathletics.org/stats-zone/road-to/7132391?eventId=10229636

That meant Shuey had to wait until the June 29, 2021, entry deadline to see if he would make the Olympics.

When the dust settled, 22 athletes qualified via the Olympic qualifying standard leaving nine spots open to those who were in the World Athletics Rankings for the event but had not thrown a qualifying mark.

Shuey is ranked 23rd in the world following the trials getting him into the field for the Olympic games along with fellow American Curtis Thompson, who edged Shuey at the Olympic trials for the U.S title. Shuey threw 259-feet, 11-inches, while Thompson threw 271-feet, 7-inches.

The men’s javelin will take place Saturday, Aug. 7 (Friday, Aug. 6 in the United States).

Shuey becomes the first former District 9 athlete to qualify for the Olympic games since Kane graduate Amy Rudolph qualified in the 5,000-meter run in 1996 and 2000 finishing 10th at the Atlanta games in 1996 and 21st at the Sydney games in 2000.

Kane graduate and former Punxsutawney head coach Chuck Daly led the inaugural “Dream Team” U.S. men’s basketball team to the gold medal at the Barcelona Games in 1992 becoming the last person with District 9 ties to medal at an Olympic games.

Shuey is a 2012 graduate of Johnsonburg High School and a 2016 graduate of Penn State.

While at Johnsonburg, Shuey won the 2012 PIAA Class 2A title and the 2011 District 9 Class 2A javelin championship. He placed second in District 9 as a senior in 2012 to Brookville’s Ryan Kerr and was also second in D9 to Kerr in 2010 as a sophomore while finishing 11th in 2009 as a freshman. He also finished seventh at the 2011 PIAA Class 2A championships and ninth at the 2010 PIAA Class 2A championships.

At Penn State, he won Big Ten titles in the javelin in 2014 and 2015 while placing second in 2017 and third in 2013. He still holds the Penn State school record in the javelin having thrown 2620-feet, 2-inches in 2017.

On a national and international stage, he won the 2014 North American, Central American, and Caribbean Under-23 championship in the javelin, and placed fourth in the javelin at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru. He was the U.S. champion that year.

Shuey is the son of Bill and Donna Shuey and has brothers, Matt and William and sisters Ginny, Sara, and Kelly. His dad was the girls’ volleyball coach at Johnsonburg and the boys’ basketball coach at St. Marys after a long and successful stint as the boys’ basketball coach at Johnsonburg. Matt played football at Clarion University and currently is the girls’ volleyball coach at Johnsonburg.

The games were delayed a year because of COVID-19 thus the 2020 Olympics being held in 2021.
