LHU Nursing Program Expands to Main Campus

Wonderful news for anyone considering a career in nursing!

LHU announces plans to create school of nursing, expand nursing program to main campus

CLEARFIELD, Pa. — Given the increasing demand for highly-qualified nurses in an ever-evolving healthcare environment, Lock Haven University is announcing plans to expand its nursing programs to the main campus and establish a school of nursing. LHU’s school of nursing will operate out of both the Lock Haven and Clearfield campuses. The idea is influenced by current trends in healthcare, primarily the consolidation of major healthcare providers into large systems, which provide the groundwork to form mutually beneficial partnerships and pipelines for their workforce.

At LHU’s February 22 meeting of the Council of Trustees, the university presented a proposal and resolution to establish a Lock Haven University School of Nursing — an administrative structure that provides for managing the challenges and capturing the opportunities in the current environment.

The proposed organization puts in place managerial support that provides administrative benefit for both the Clearfield and Lock Haven campuses, brings nursing expertise to support the faculty in geographic and programmatic expansion and extends capacity for building industry partnerships and revenue generation.

Since 1991, Lock Haven University has provided comprehensive nursing education to students in the Clearfield region, when the University established the Clearfield Campus. LHU took in the Central Pennsylvania School of Nursing, an RN diploma program operated by a consortium of four Clearfield area hospitals, and converted it to a two-year associate degree program in nursing (ASN).

The university has since added gateway associate degree and online RN to BSN degree programs. The nursing programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). They have served as the anchor of the Clearfield campus, representing approximately half of the enrollments and drawing primarily from Clearfield and immediate surrounding counties. Currently, 176 students are enrolled in LHU’s nursing program.

Recently, a state-of-the-art simulation lab opened through a partnership between Penn Highlands Hospital in Clearfield and the LHU Nursing Department, further expanding opportunities for LHU nursing students to experience hands-on learning in a true-to-life hospital setting.

LHU President Robert Pignatello believes that establishing a school of nursing and extending the nursing program to LHU’s main campus is an important next step in the evolution of the University’s nursing and healthcare programs. “Lock Haven University is committed to aligning our academic program offerings to meet the workforce needs of the Commonwealth in critical areas like health care. Establishing the Lock Haven University School of Nursing, bringing LHU’s highly-reputable nursing programs to Lock Haven’s main campus, and growing the nursing program at Clearfield will provide expanded access to affordable and quality nursing education in the central Pennsylvania region,” LHU President Pignatello said.

A recent review of the program by Dr. Stephen Cavanagh, RN, PhD, MPA, FRSPH, FInstLM, FAAN, and dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, supports the University’s proposal to expand the program to the main campus and establish the school.

“I am of the opinion that a school [of Nursing] is warranted on the grounds that it will greatly facilitate the focus, stature, and growth of the nursing programs at the Clearfield Campus, Lock Haven University main campus and elsewhere,” Cavanagh said.

The school of nursing will continue the university’s reputation for high-quality programs with excellent outcomes taught by highly motivated faculty and staff who are genuinely passionate about the quality of education they offer.

“Lock Haven University is proud to be preparing the next generation of healthcare providers, managers, and educators,” Dr. Donna Wilson, provost and executive vice president at Lock Haven University, said.

The recent redesign of the Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) as a “sharing system” has the potential to increase opportunities for nursing students and faculty without increasing costs; and the opportunity to expand — both geographically and programmatically — to capture more of the nursing education enrollments in the Clearfield and Lock Haven markets and beyond.

The school will be bolstered by the existing reputable footprint of Lock Haven University health science and healthcare professions academic programs that can be leveraged to garner enrollments, recognition, partnerships and resources across not only regional and Commonwealth but also national markets.

Dr. Jonathan Lindzey, LHU dean of the College of Natural, Behavioral and Health Sciences; the faculty in the Nursing Department; Dr. Donna Wilson, provost and executive vice president; and President Robert Pignatello are excited about the prospect of establishing the school of nursing and believe the move will advance the expansion, stature, enrollment, resources and operation of the program.

For more information on Lock Haven University Clearfield, visit www.lockhaven.edu/Clearfield, email clearfieldadmissions@Lockhaven.edu, or call 570-814-3405.

Lock Haven University’s Clearfield campus is located in a small community situated along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in scenic Pennsylvania. The campus offers 9 undergraduate majors, including bachelor and associate degrees.

LHU is a member of Pennsylvania’s State System, the largest provider of higher education in the Commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 2,300 degree and certificate programs in more than 530 academic areas of study. Nearly 520,000 system alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.

CCHS Students Conduct Community Heart & Soul Interviews

February 22, 2019) Walt Disney once said, “Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” Using this ideal as motivating inspiration, members of the Cameron County Project (CCP), over the past several months, have felt a strong obligation to reach the voices and opinions of the younger generation as part of the CCP’s Resident-Driven Visioning Study. Unfortunately, the views of children and teenagers are oftentimes overlooked and sometimes hard to discover. However, the CCP has explained that in order to build a more prosperous Cameron County now and for years to come, the hopes, concerns, and calls to action of our younger residents should be taken into consideration. Luckily, the CCP’s commitment to this objective came to fruition thanks to a coalition between the CCP and Mrs. Carrie Copp’s Senior Communications Class! This union was made possible by the diligent efforts of Amy Goode of the Community Education Center of Elk and Cameron Counties (CEC). As Program Manager of the CEC, Goode is in charge of a partnership called the Discover Partnership. It helps connect schools, businesses, and communities. Therefore, Goode thought that the CCP would benefit from this partnership to reach into the halls of the Cameron County schools. When asked why she thought it was important to consider the views of younger Cameron County residents to find solutions to help their county prosper, Goode stated, “It is important for the youth to have pride and respect in their community in order to keep them there. Providing opportunities for them to express their voice is an important piece to providing them with a connection within their community and to promote that pride.”

In Copp’s class, her students have initiated mini-community heart and soul studies by identifying the multiple “voices” among their peers and fellow students at Cameron County Jr./Sr. High School (CCHS). These “voices” include, but are not limited to, band members, shop students, environmental/outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, honor students, students in the workforce, and “uninvolved students” (kids who are not involved in any school activities). After discerning these various voices, Copp’s students began the process of conducting one-on-one interviews with other students by recording them via videotape. Also, Copp’s class is going to be broadening their study by interviewing teachers at CCHS. Furthermore, her students have written blog posts answering the CCP’s Heart & Soul question survey. Their blogs will be posted within the next few weeks! Please feel free to read them online at thecameroncountyproject.com or check out the CCP Facebook and Instagram pages! Thanks to Copp’s students, the CCP has gained insightful information and ideas which seemed to have carried across different grade levels which could result in implementable actions going forward with the CCP’s future projects and overall goals.

Major Thomas E. Clark

I am a little late sharing this wonderful tribute.
Thank you June Caldwell for giving me permission to share this story.

Fifty Years ago on Feb. 8, 1969, my uncle, Major Thomas E. Clark was shot down in his F-100D Super Sabre over Laos. Below is his story.

Thomas Edward Clark was born on April 15, 1939 in Emporium, Pennsylvania as the third son of the late Otto and Josephine Schager Clark. An avid hunter and fisherman, Tom enjoyed the outdoors. He was a star fullback at Cameron County High School, graduating with honors in 1957. After attending Penn State University for two years, Clark received an appointment to the Air Force Academy from which he graduated in 1963. The graduation ceremony included the first commencement address to the Academy from a sitting president, President John F. Kennedy. That same year Tom married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Mottern of Emporium. The 1963 Air Force Academy Yearbook states that Tom's goals were to be a pilot and a politician.

On February 8, 1969 Captain Clark was flying an F-100D Super Sabre, of 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 37th Tactical Fight Wing, in a flight of four mission over Laos. The flight controlled by an F-4 Forward Air Controller, engaged a 23mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery battery. Captain Clark's aircraft was hit by rounds from the artillery battery, burst into flames, and crashed. No parachute was observed. Aircraft in the area conducted visual and electronic searches, with negative results. Subsequent to the incident, the U.S. Air Force determined Captain Clark to be Killed in Action (KIA), Body not Recovered (BNR). The Air Force posthumously promoted Tom to the rank of Major.

On February 12, 1991, a joint U.S./Lao People's Democratic Republic team investigated the crash of Thomas E. Clark's F-100. In late 1991, a Thai citizen turned over to U.S. Officials in Thailand human remains as well as military identification tag and a partial military identification tag bearing Major Clark's name. The remains were identified as other than Captain Clark's. In February of 1992 a team worked to excavate the suspected crash site of Thomas E. Clark in the Savannakhet Province with no apparent results. In October of 2005 a joint team re-investigated the crash site excavated in 1992. Another bone fragment was found but later identified as not part of a human. In October of 2009 another joint team re-excavated portions of the crash site and recovered human remains. After extensive examination, including isotope testing, the human remains were identified as the remains of Thomas E. Clark.

The Clark family was notified in June 2011 that the remains of Thomas E. Clark would be returned to the family.

The Emporium Community welcomed Major Clark home on Oct. 20th, 2011. A Pennsylvania State Police escort was provided from the Pittsburgh airport. On Interstate 80 at several exits, various Honor Guards stood along the roadside to pay respects as the caravan passed by. Once the caravan arrived in St. Marys, they received additional escorts by the Patriot Riders to Emporium. When the caravan arrived in Emporium, the streets were lined with community members to welcome their local hero home. The football team stood together as one element of the community with their game jerseys on for the game that evening. Additional tributes were provided such as an order by Governor Corbett to have flags at the state capital and Emporium to be flown at half-staff.

In order to properly remember Major Thomas E. Clark’s sacrifice to his country and to thank the community, the Clark family established a scholarship for a Cameron County High School senior. Funds for the scholarship have come from Seneca Resources, selling Christmas Trees from the Clark Family Christmas Tree farm, private and family donations.

Words cannot express the feeling of personal thanks for the US government and their tireless efforts to work so hard to bring Uncle Tom home to his family, the escort that was provided by the Pennsylvania State Police and Patriot Riders, and the Emporium Community for their warm reception of their fallen hero returning home.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the scholarship please send it to:

Cappy's Clothes Business Undergoes Renovation

After

Before

The former Cappy's Clothes in Emporium has been undergoing a renovation. Sarah Nolan, retired First Sergeant from the Marine Corps, relocated to Cameron County and has been busy renovating her home on E. 5th Street and transforming the former business of Cappy's Clothes on Main Street. Sarah is a talented artist and shared this with me last year when we spoke about some of her plans.

"It will likely take a good year or two for me to fix it up and get established as a profitable business. In the meantime, the space will be used as my art studio. Though it is anticipated for the restoration/beautification of the building to be a lengthy process, I do look forward to periodically opening the doors to the community for sneak peaks, small events, art collaborations, and possibly some other delightful surprises. Who knows where this road will take? It’s an adventure and a blessing to have this opportunity."

Studio sneak peek....

It’s not just my art studio and gallery. This is also a gathering place for special occasions.

Still needs a little work, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

My very first customers will rent my space for a rehearsal dinner on Friday and then once again on Saturday for the wedding reception. The building isn’t perfect, but it’s unique. If you’re looking for a unique place to have an event, consider renting my studio space. I’ll haze myself to make your event magnificent.

And the more customers I get, the more amenities I can afford to add!!
