Being the virtuoso of magical delight, the genius behind the mouse, and the creator of dreams and adventure alike, Disney made such a true and incredible statement! To me, books are more than mere ink, paper, and binding. They are truly the world’s greatest treasure more valuable than silver or gold. As you open a book, you’re rewarded with an opportunity to enter a new world where journeys, new friends, and ​memories await around every corner and every page. Like a true friend, a book will never let you down, it’ll comfort you when life becomes too overwhelming, and it’ll provide you an escape from the everyday!

As a young boy, I learned to love books because of the adventures that awaited me when I opened to Page 1. But, books provided me with even greater experiences. As a person, I’ve always been very shy and introverted, and it’s always been hard to be myself around other people. Sometimes the Matt Nolder that people see is not the Matt Nolder that I would wish them to see. This is probably why I love books so much! Because by reading a book, I no longer have to be myself. I can transform into another character and live the story with a whole new set of friends!

This is why I appreciate the library so much. It meets this goal 100% and it makes it such an awesome asset in Cameron County! But the library means far more to me than this. Some of the best moments I had as a boy took place at the library! It was here that I took part in reading programs which allowed me to read new books and take part in exploring new worlds. Not only that, I would have never considered working as a librarian aide while attending college if it hadn’t been for my hometown library. Furthermore, my most favored skill/trait is my imagination. Imagination has truly been a blessing! Not only has it helped me to come out of my introverted shell. But it has also been useful in developing my own stories, creating my characters while performing in plays, and building myself up as a young man dedicated to sharing my passion for books with the next generation. I’ll always be grateful to the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library and Cameron County for providing me with such a treasure trove that I’ll always cherish! What I love about Cameron County is that it prides itself on providing its residents with news periodicals, historical data, magazines, books (fiction/non-fiction), computer accessibility, and youth programs in order to entertain, enlighten, and inform people of all ages.

INDIANA, Pa. - The following students from Cameron County have been named to the spring 2018 dean’s list at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Students achieve dean’s list status when they are full-time (12 or more credits) with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher. Robert A. Miller

Robert A. Miller, 89, of Sizerville Rd., Emporium, died in his home on Monday, August 27, 2018, following a short illness.

Born May 3, 1929 in Emporium, he was the son of Frank C. and Mildred Faucett Miller. In March of 1954 in Frenchville, he married Marie Renaud who survives. A lifelong resident of Emporium he was a 1946 graduate of Emporium High School. Bob was a veteran who served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of VFW Post 6221 and the American Legion Post 194, both in Emporium. He was retired truck driver and spent most of his career employed by GTE Sylvania in Emporium and St. Marys.

In addition to his wife Marie, survivors include: one daughter, Karen Mancini and husband Larry of Clifton, Virginia; one grandson, Peter Joseph Mancini also of Clifton; one brother, Jim Miller of Emporium; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Miller (Nov. 1944) and Harry Miller (Dec. 1944), both KIA during WWII, and one sister, Marjorie Hayes in 1999.

There will be a private interment at Newton Cemetery with Rev. Matt Ryan officiating and military honors will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

There will be no visitation and no Funeral Service at this time. 

 A Memorial Service celebrating Bob’s life will be scheduled for a later date.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to VFW Post 6221, American Legion Post 194, or the Cameron County SPCA, all in Emporium.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

Facade Improvement Project Continues In Emporium

To date, two businesses in downtown Emporium have completed a facade update and two more are underway. Business owners are assisted with their facade improvements through a grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development. This DCED grant, in cooperation with the Sylvan Heritage Council, the Cameron County IDA, the County of Cameron, the Emporium Borough, and the business owners will help upgrade 7 downtown businesses.

Pizza Palace was the first business to complete an upgrade. A new awning has been installed and the front and side of the business has been painted and upgraded.

Floor Masters has completed their facade upgrade. New windows and a new stone facade have transformed the front of the former hardware store once owned by Henry Zimmer.

Work is underway on two additional businesses. The Lundberg building, home of the Chamber of Commerce and the Malizia building directly across the street. Two businesses in the Malizia building previously received new signage with help from the Sylvan Heritage Council. This building is home to the River / WLEM radio station, Copy Katz / the Endeavor News and the law office
of Malizia & Malizia PC.

The Aroma Cafe, the Liquor Store and Solvesons building are next in line for the remaining facade improvements.

West Creek Rails to Trails

Sharing a photo of my friends out enjoying the West Creek Rails to Trails. The trail begins in Emporium and heads 18 miles west to the town of St. Marys in Elk County. Its a steady climb during the ride to St. Marys, and all downhill to Emporium. The trail is crushed limestone and very nice to ride on.

If the riding uphill is not your idea of a good time, take the ATA bus from Emporium to St.Marys and ride your bike back. Call ATA for details and times of service. ATA Customer Service: 866-282-4968 They have installed a bike rack outside of the bus to transport bicycles.

All Fired Up

All Fired Up

The annual All Fired Up and Kickin’ Ash BBQ Competition sparking interest with a new category. This year on Saturday September 22, competitors have the opportunity to take home $500 cash when they wow the judges with mystery meat!

Competitors will be presented with the meat to prepare at 9pm Friday night. Only the chamber staff will know what kind of meat they are to prepare. Competitors must use what they have on hand to create a dish suitable for judging. The new competition is sponsored by Embassy Powdered Metals.

A panel of judges will select winners for the following categories: Mystery Meat, Chicken Wings, Ribs, Brisket, Turkey, Pork, Side Dishes and Dessert. Registration closes September 17.

 Christmas in the Wilds set for Friday and Saturday December 7 and 8. Friday night is the holiday house tour and Saturday begins with breakfast with Santa, vendors lining downtown and a parade. Saturday night kicks off the house decorating contest!

Facade Improvement

 Cameron County Chamber of Commerce receiving a face-lift over the next two weeks.

 Owners of the building at 34 East Fourth Street, Blair and Linda Lundberg say the project should be completed by September 1. The exterior work will mean the entrance to the chamber will be cordoned off, however a side entrance will be utilized off of Cherry Street.

 The operating hours for the chamber will remain unchanged: Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, Tuesday night 6:30pm-9:30pm, Saturday 8am-2pm and Sunday 1pm-4pm.

Shippen Township Closed Labor Day

Shippen Township will be closed on Monday, September 3rd in observance of Labor Day. 

 Monday’s refuse pick-up will be on Tuesday. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday’s refuse collections will remain the same.

FIRST RESPONDERS MASS

FIRST RESPONDERS MASS - St. Mark Church will commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States at a special mass to be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. 

Cameron County local and state law enforcement, fire and emergency medical service personnel, mountaineer search and rescue, military veterans and members of the Reserve Forces of all faiths are invited to dress in uniform and attend the mass. Everyone in the community is invited to attend as well. 

We will pray for the Church, our nation, the world and those who experienced the attacks or lost loved ones on 9/11. A reception will follow in O’Connell Hall. There will be prayers and a special blessing to honor all those who make a difference every day in our community for their extraordinary commitment. God bless America and let there be peace on earth.

Cam County Project August Volunteer Meeting

The Cameron County Project will be holding its August Volunteer Meeting on Monday August 27th from 6 pm to 7 pm at the Cameron County Recreation Center. We are excited to be discussing the project’s work on the Community Heart and Soul designation process, continued identification of community voices and story gathering efforts, upcoming events and new volunteer and phase 2 trainings. 

The Cameron County Project’s mission is to encourage resident engagement and community pride by focusing on the themes in our community that unite us and highlighting them through a campaign of storytelling and resident-driven visioning. Elk, butterflies, and kayak breakfast tour this Weekend at Sinnemahoning 

 The weekend of August 25-26, 2018, Sinnemahoning State Park is offering four great opportunities to learn more about the natural resources of our area. Programs include a guest presentation on elk management in Pennsylvania, monarch butterfly tagging, and campground talk on hummingbirds on Saturday, followed by a Sunday breakfast-and-kayaking program at the lake. Program details include:

Monarch Butterflies - Saturday, August 25, 10:00 - 11:30 AM. Help scientists learn more about the fall migration of monarchs. Program begins in classroom of the Wildlife Center with a PowerPoint presentation then moves outdoors to catch, tag, and release butterflies. Walk will cover about ½ mile over uneven ground. All ages welcome to attend.

Elk in Pennsylvania - Saturday, August 25, 2:00 - 3:00 PM. Join Pennsylvania Game Commission elk biologist, Jeremy Banfield, for a fascinating look into the life of one of our largest, most intriguing wild animals. Learn the true facts about elk restoration, current populations and elk management in PA from an expert in the field. Discussion questions welcome. Program intended for adults and older children. Wildlife Center Classroom.

Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air - Saturday, August 25, 7:30 - 9:00 PM. Learn more about these tiny, beautiful birds and how to provide habitat to attract them to your backyard. Campground talk followed by new PBS video "Magic in the Air". Campground Amphitheater.

Dutch Oven Breakfast Kayak Tour - Sunday, August 26, 9:00 -11:00 AM. Create breakfast with cast iron Dutch ovens, then take a kayak tour of the George B Stevenson Dam, returning to shore in time to enjoy a tasty meal. Glen Fiebig

Glen Fiebig, 72, of 47 Huckleberry Circle, Emporium, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Monday morning. (August 20, 2018) He was born May 18, 1946 in Norristown, PA a son of the late Edward R and Josephine Fiebig. On May 28, 2016 in Emporium he married his best friend Michele Park, who survives.

 Glen was a 1964 graduate of Anville Cleona High School where he excelled in track and Field and basketball. He was also the president of the band where he played drums. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Glen was a Pennsylvania state police officer for over 30 years and a member of the Pennsylvania state police rodeo. He was a Cameron County commissioner for 16 years and was very active in the community, volunteering his time to create opportunities for the youth. Glen was instrumental in building a playground in Driftwood, a play ground and ball field in Sinnamahoning and enhancing the Cameron County Little League complex in Emporium. He was involved in Little League baseball for over 40 years. Little league was a great source of pride for him and he was the district 10 administrator for over 37 years. He brought the Pennsylvania State Little League tournament to Cameron County which he hosted for over 32 years. He umpired games at the Little League World Series in Williamsport PA and also the Senior Little League World Series in Kissimmee, Florida. Glen was a part of so many local organizations. The last few years he actually took time to slow down and enjoy his life. He loved to travel and ride his motorcycle.

In addition to his wife Michele he is survived by son, Shawn (Sara) Fiebig, Annville, PA; daughter, Carole (Craig) Heim, Emporium; son, Eric (Eryn) Fiebig, Emporium; son, Justin (Samantha) Fiebig, Kane; step-son, Jake Brown, Ft. Collins, CO; step-daughter, Katie Brown, Northumberland, PA; nine grandchildren: Emily, David, Aaron, Bryce, John, Max, Aedrick and Axeton and Diana; brother, Edward R. Fiebig, Jr., Orange Park, FL; mother & father-in-law, Harry and JoAnn Park, Emporium.

 In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Fiebig,

 There will be No Visitation. 

Services will be Private.

 Celebration of Life Service will be held at the convenience of the family. 

Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Driftwood, PA

David A. Karkoska

David A. Karkoska, 54, of 155 Elmwood Drive, Emporium, PA formerly of Phoenixville, PA died unexpectedly at his residence on Friday (August 17, 2018) morning. He was born January 31, 1964 in Phoenixville, PA a son of the late James J. and Catherine Wilson Karkoska. He married James (Jim) Wendel, who survives.

He graduated from Phoenixville High School. He worked as an underwriter for Fannie Mae Mortgage Company for many years and was recently planning his retirement. He and Jim, along with business partner Sharon Robinson, purchased the former Erskine home in Emporium and are in the process of extensive renovations on the it where they were awaiting the grand opening of The Hygrade Inn, the areas newest Bed & Breakfast, set to open Nov. 1, 2018. David had a passion for living, loved people, and touched the hearts of everyone with whom he came into contact. Life will be much lonelier without him.

Surviving in addition to his spouse James Wendel; two brothers, James W. Karkoska, Bethel, PA and Richard J. Karkoska, Lewes, DE; sister, Sandra J. (Lee) Marlow, Emporium; mother-in-law, Janice Fitch, Emporium; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

 There will be No Visitation. 

Services will be announced at a later date.

High School Hype: Cameron County

High School Hype: Cameron County: Next up for our High School Hype preseason previews is Cameron County. The Raiders went 1-8 last season, but picked up their only win in the final week of the regular season.  Now the team has a new head coach in Jody Bailey - a longtime assistant. Castle Garden Bed & Breakfast LLC

During this summer's 100 mile yard sale, I took a ride to the southern part of Cameron County. The Castle Garden area, to be exact. Castle Garden is a small neighborhood off of Rt 155 which branches off of Rt 120 in Driftwood. I knew there would be a large sale at one of the homes, I remembered it from the previous year.

   I was surprised to learn the home at 749 Castle Garden road was being renovated into a beautiful bed & breakfast inn. Owners Donna Mae & Jack are completely restoring this home. If I'm remembering correctly, the home was built by a Dougherty family. Emporium resident Sandra Dougherty Ford was raised there and Jack was happy to show us older photos of the home. Later the home was sold to a McCool family , then the Zucals and is now owned by Donna and Jack. The home was under construction when I was there, but guests are staying on site. The outside photo I have does not do it justice, I will take a better photo soon. If your out for a ride some evening or weekend, make it a point to drive down and see this beautiful home. It's common to see an elk nearby, neighbors out on the porch and when the weather is warm, people are often floating down the creek, enjoying the view.

The Cameron County Food Pantry will hold a distribution for people determined eligible on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the building located behind the Northern Tier Community Action offices at 135 West Fourth Street in Emporium.

Learn about the fascinating world of mushrooms with Central PA Mushroom expert Bill Russell. The seminar will begin promptly at 12:00 PM at the Driftwood Saloon followed by a

GUIDED WALK. At 1:00 PM we will pile into the Driftwood Mushroom Bus and go to choice mushroom collecting sites. After the walk we will come back to the saloon where we have a: >

WILD MUSHROOM IDENTIFICATION AND TASTING. We will identify and discuss the mushrooms we collected, along with mushrooms that were brought to identify. The Driftwood chefs will prepare the choice edible species for all to sample.

Austin L. "Lynnie" Hostler, Jr.

Austin L. "Lynnie" Hostler, Jr., 53, of 115 Four Mile Rd., Emporium, PA died at his residence on Monday evening. (August 6, 2018). He was born March 27, 1965 in Altoona, PA a son of Austin and Paula Stiver Hostler Sr., Hudson, NC. He married Kimberly Jones, who survives.

Lennie graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1983. He worked as a self employed logger for many years. He was a member of the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club.

In addition to his parents and wife he is survived by a daughter, Nicole Hulick, Dover, DE; brother, Richard (Michelle) Hostler, Fayetteville, NC; sister, Glenda (Tony) Bentley, Hudson, NC; brother, James (Pam) Hostler, Hulett, WY and several, nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard A. Hostler.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

2018 Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Club Annual Snake Hunt

The Sportsmen's Club is is a busy place. 

If you haven't been there for one of their events, consider stopping in!

Throughout the year our events include trout stocking, youth day, snake hunt, fishing derby and coyote hunt to name a few. Keep checking our Facebook page for upcoming events. We have campsites to rent--just call the club to reserve a spot; and we also offer warm showers: $5 If you are not a member, please consider joining. You can do this by either private messaging the club through Facebook, emailing us at sinnsport@windstream.net, or stopping in at the club and requesting an application from the bartender. We would love to see you!!
