DEP Finds Record Radon Level in Home, Encourages All Pennsylvania Residents to Test for This Radioactive Gas

Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has detected a new record-high level of radon and is once again encouraging state residents to test their homes for this radioactive gas, a leading cause of lung cancer.

In October, a home in southern Lehigh County showed a radon level of 6,176 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), the highest recorded in the state. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set an action level for radon concentration in homes at 4 pCi/L. Homes testing above this level should have a radon reduction system installed.

“We encourage people to buy a radon home test kit and take the steps necessary to protect themselves and their families,” said DEP Acting Secretary Patrick McDonnell. “Fall and winter are an ideal time to test, because the gas becomes trapped inside when doors and windows are closed.”

Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally through the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks. It can enter a home through cracks in the foundation or other openings.

The National Toxicology Program, comprising the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Food and Drug Administration, classifies radon as a known human carcinogen. Scientists estimate that about 20,000 lung cancer deaths yearly are related to radon. It’s the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and second leading cause in smokers.

Because of its geology, Pennsylvania is prone to high radon levels. Radon has been detected in all 67 counties, and about 40 percent of homes in the state have levels above EPA’s action level. In 2014, a number of homes in the southern Lehigh County area were found to have radon levels over 1,000 pCi/L. That area is near the Reading Prong, a geological section of granite rock that historically has generated high levels of radon.

Testing is the only way to know if a home, school, workplace or other structure has elevated levels of radon. An easy home test kit can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores for about $20 to $30. People may also hire a state-certified testing company.

If a level above 4 pCi/L is found, a radon mitigation, or reduction, system should be installed. This is essentially a pipe with a fan to suction the gas from the ground and discharge it above the roofline, where the radon is dispersed. DEP recommends that home builders install radon reduction systems during construction.

DEP certifies all radon testers, mitigators and laboratories doing business in the state, to ensure reliable results.

For more information, including information on interpreting radon test results and finding a Pennsylvania-certified radon contractor, visit the DEP Radon Division website or call 800-23-RADON (800-237-2366).

Vandals Target Emporium Businesses

Vandals Target Emporium Businesses

The spirit of Christmas ruined by a vandalism spree that began Thanksgiving night. Numerous unique holiday designs created by Emporium businesses tore apart or stolen. In addition the large flower pots adorning the two major intersections downtown had the greens torn out and thrown on the ground. A cement bench also moved and in the process two cracks now threaten the structure.

"Disappointment does not begin to describe my feelings," says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak. Solak continues, "these businesses struggle to keep their doors open, due to shoppers purchasing on the internet or at big box stores, so they create an inviting atmosphere that is ruined by thugs." Solak says she will spend the next few days collecting information from the business owners and will file a police report. "The action over the last few days makes it difficult to find volunteers and business owners willing to give time to spruce up the town.
 It is sad."

Veterans Day in Cameron County

EMPORIUM — Services were held on Wednesday to commemorate veterans in Cameron County and honor those who served the country in wartime.

Early in the day, Veterans Day program was performed at Cameron County High School, with students, veterans and community members participating.

The ceremony has been held every year at the high school since the 1960s, and the community is welcome to attend each year. Students in grades seven through 12 are dismissed from classes in order to attend the event.

During the program, roll calls of veterans who were killed serving their country during each major conflict and a list of veterans who passed away over the past year are read by students and the commanders of the Cameron County Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion clubs.

The high school band participates in the ceremony, opening the program with the Star Spangled Banner and playing another musical selection. This year, the band performed “Officer of the Day,” written by Robert Browne Hall.

The laying of wreaths in honor of the fallen is performed by members of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the VFW and American Legion organizations, along with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.” “Taps” was performed this year by high school band members Cerise Ramsey and Kaitlyn Burgett.

The Veterans’ Day Address this year was given by former U.S. Marine Thomas Richards, a graduate of the high school who now serves as a member of the Cameron County Memorial Detail Honor Guard. Richards spoke of the courage and sacrifice of veterans and of the difficulties they face when returning to their civilian lives. “America’s men and women risk life and limb every day so we can live free,” Richards said. “We should continually endeavor to serve veterans as well as they’ve served our country.”

Richards said veterans make America stronger, and are likely to volunteer in the community, as firefighters, EMTs, search and rescue and in other service-type organizations, but they often face hardships at home finding jobs and stable housing. Richards said one in four homeless people in the United States is a veteran, and nine out of 10 of those on the streets were honorably discharged. Many of them served in Vietnam, but have had difficulties due to PTSD and other illnesses or injuries resulting from their service in wartime. “When someone mentions the high cost of veterans’ benefits, remind them of the high cost of being a veteran,” said Richards.

Richards also read a piece written by author C.S. Lewis, which stated, “All that we fear from all kinds of adversity, severally, is collected together in the life of a soldier on active service. Like sickness, it threatens pain and death. Like poverty, it threatens ill lodging, cold, heat, thirst and hunger. Like slavery, it threatens toil, humiliation, injustice and arbitrary rule. Like exile, it separates you from all you love.”

Following ceremonies at the high school, a memorial service is held at the Big Flag Memorial on Emporium’s West End and in front of the Cameron County Courthouse at the World War I Memorial.

During both ceremonies, wreaths are laid, prayers are read, the honor guard fires a salute and “Taps” is played in honor of the men and women who died during various wars. At the Big Flag Memorial, monuments to soldiers who fell in World War II, Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War and in Iraq and Afghanistan are kept. At the courthouse, a Soldiers and Sailors monument and the World War I monument are maintained on the front lawn.

Throughout the day, Emporium’s Main Street is lined with American flags, and the wreaths laid during morning ceremonies are left up throughout the day in honor of veterans.

In the evening, veterans were treated to a free dinner in honor of Veterans Day by the Cameron County Vets Club. All food is prepared and served by members of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. Last year, nearly 100 veterans attended the meal and social hour. Numbers were expected to be comparable again this year.

While Veterans Day is set aside specifically to remember the sacrifices made by veterans to maintain the safety and prosperity of the nation, local veterans’ organizations urge the public to remember veterans every day for their hard work, dedication and service.

Cameron County Community Chest 2017 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

Cameron County Community Chest 2017 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

We are five weeks into the 2017 fund drive. Over 200 letters have gone out to local individuals, businesses and organizations. We have had a great start. Through Oct. 31st we have collected $3,431 toward our $20,500 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed.
This drive will run through September 30, 2017.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month’s feature will be the Cameron County Recreation Board.

Cameron County Recreation Center provides many different services to the local community. The main focus is to provide a safe but fun environment for area youth to enjoy. The game room is open Tuesdays through Saturday and offers a variety of table games and electronic gaming. The membership also includes use of the outdoor basketball court. They have two rooms available for rent for meetings and parties. The large room is the most popular for parties and can be rented for a minimal fee. There is no charge for business rentals. Tables and chairs can be rented (when available) as well as outdoor party games. Various exercise classes are also available each week. Please contact the Center for more information or check out their Facebook page.

The Recreation Center will continue to collaborate with the 4-H program to provide out of school programs for youth ages 8-18 as well as summer 4-H programs. This summer, two local playgrounds were supervised, South Park and Third Street. The participants enjoyed wildlife presentations from Cameron County Conservation, Beekeeping from Ryan Magaro, a painting class by Peggy Heckman and several walking trips to local offices including the courthouse and the chamber. Cameron County Recreation is also responsible for organizing and scheduling games for the girls and boys elementary basketball program. Cameron County Recreation Center is funded partly by the County, Emporium Foundation and Community Chest. The 4-H and summer programs are funded entirely by grants from the Emporium Foundation. For questions about any of the programs that are provided please contact the Recreation Director, Holly Manginell by phone 814-486-8915 or by email at camcorecreation@gmail.com.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager. Help to support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team, and the Garden Club.

Rotary News November 1, 2016

Todd Parisi, (left) Leadership & Motivational Speaker, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon November 1st. Todd is a native of Kersey, PA, but now lives in the mountains over Emporium and is the proud father of 3 and grandfather of one.

He joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1986 entered recruit training in South Carolina. From that date until his retirement in September of 2014, Sergeant Major Parisi served in multiple combat tours in multiple wars. After his retirement in 2014, Todd served as a Freshman high school teacher where he was nominated as Teacher of the Year. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Organizational Management and is the author of the book "From Where I Stand". Todd then decided to move back to the area and is currently active in community fundraising. Sergeant Major Parisi has reached over 9,000 students with his inspirational messages. He has also spoken to organizations such as Global Fortune 500 companies, GEICO, Veterans Groups, Active Military, youth groups, law enforcement and fire groups. He has also been active in many fundraising actives in the area. His message was that we only pass through this life once and how it is everyone should be an inspiration to others, give back to their community by being part of the solution not the problem, and that no one can do things alone that we all are stronger together.

Also pictured is Rotarian, Joshua Parslow. Guests joining the luncheon were Kate Morgan, from the Cameron County Conservation District and Rick Custer from the
Hot Springs Village Rotary Club, AR.
