DCNR survey seeking feedback from ATV Enthusiasts

DCNR survey seeking feedback from ATV enthusiasts across Pa. In a bid to better gauge ATV use across Pennsylvania and plan for future riding opportunities in the state, DCNR is seeking participation of riders and owners in an online survey.

“DCNR is working on a study to analyze existing ATV trails and parks in Pennsylvania, as well as explore possibilities for establishing additional riding areas,” DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said this week. “The survey is designed to help create a statewide inventory of ATV riding opportunities on public and private lands. Also, we are researching opportunities to partner with local governments, nonprofits, and for-profit organizations to create and develop new ATV parks, trails, and facilities to meet the needs of ATV owners.”

DCNR officials first announced this forthcoming survey in early June when they joined representatives of the Department of Environmental Protection in announcing the reopening of the Whiskey Springs ATV Trail. The popular public ATV trail, threading through Sproul State Forest near Westport, Clinton County, is heavily used by ATV riders.

DCNR records as of Aug. 1 show more than 168,680 registered ATV owners ride on private land and approved state forest trails.

“We want to explore avenues of meeting these registered owners’ need,” Dunn said. “To do that effectively, we need to better understand the wants and needs of the ATV user. We also ask riders to spread the word to fellow ATV enthusiasts—we want as much survey input as possible.”

The survey will remain active through Sept. 15. Please click the below link to take the survey.

The study is being completed by Moshier Studio and Pashek Associates. Questions may be directed to John Buerkle at jbuerkle@pashekassociates.com.

Falling Rock Damages Spehalski Vehicle

After a relaxing visit to Ocean City, Emporium residents Tom and Bonnie Spehalski experienced the scare of a lifetime while driving home Wednesday evening on Rt 120 past Renova, PA.

Anyone that has traveled that road is aware of the "Falling Rocks" signs. A large rock fell on the windshield area of the Spehalski vehicle as they left the Renova area. Bonnie stated the car was full of glass but Tom was able to drive the damaged car through the strong thunderstorm that was in the area at that time. Thankfully both occupants suffered no injuries.

Timber Rattlesnake program at Sinnemahoning State Park

Sinnemahoning – Stacy Foster to present timber rattlesnake program titled, The Secret Behind the Rattle, on Saturday, August 13, 2016, 7:00-8:30 PM, at Sinnemahoning State Park

Both terrifying and intriguing, the timber rattlesnake is a secretive and shy creature that is unjustly feared by many people. On Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Sinnemahoning State Park, certified timber rattlesnake construction monitor, Stacy Foster, will present a detailed portrayal into the life of a timber rattlesnake, a surprisingly docile and significant component of our Pennsylvania forest ecosystem.

Stacy, who graduated from Penn State Dubois with a degree in wildlife technology and a passion for snakes, is a huge advocate of using environmental education as a tool to promote the preservation of wildlife, particularly rattlesnakes. During her program on Saturday evening, Stacy will introduce the three venomous snakes that can be found in Pennsylvania, provide helpful identification tools in order to correctly identify these venomous snakes, and detail the natural history of Pennsylvania's largest pit viper, the timber rattlesnake. Stacy will also discuss common misconceptions associated with the timber rattler and share safety precautions that can be easily applied if you encounter this passive creature in the wild.

This program, entitled, “The Secret Behind the Rattle” will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the classroom of the Park Office and Wildlife Center, located at 4843 Park Drive, Austin, PA. Concluding the presentation, Stacy will give park visitors an opportunity to view up-close a live rattlesnake.

For more information about programs and events at Sinnemahoning State Park, contact the park office at 814-647-8401 or by email at SinnemahoningSP@pa.gov. Online, visit Sinnemahoning-State-Park on Facebook or view the PA State Park calendar of events at http://events.dcnr.pa.gov/

Cameron County Fair Week

The Cameron County Fair kicked off their opening week with the annual tractor parade. Many turned out to see the parade through downtown Emporium. This years fair is from August 7-13 and the theme is "We have good things growing!" You can visit the fair's website at to see this weeks calendar of events. Come out and support your local fair. Beaver Hall is filled with exhibits and they are so interesting to see.

 Cameron Co. Fair History

Keystone Park was the first known location of the Cameron County Fair. Keystone Park is where GKN Sinter Metals and Embassy Sintered Metals are located on Airport Road and where the West Creek branch now flows. According to History of Cameron County (1991edition), the first fair was held around 1901. The fair was under the sponsorship of the Cameron County Agricultural Association. The fair was held each September until 1917. The start of the world War I and a severe flu epidemic put a halt to the fair that year.

The Cameron County Fair formed an association in 1967 as a committee of the Emporium Jaycees. The fair was held at the Pine Street Field. This fair worked in close partnership with the 4H program. After the field was sold in 1970 to Motor Coils a new location was pursued.

Mr. Henry Zimmer, a jaysee, made an offer to allow the fair to use a piece of land that had been the previous location of the Smokeless Powder and Picric Acid Plant. Paul Abriatis, another jaysee, loaned the fair committee bulldozers to prepare the land.

After many years of work the fair has grown into a lush green area with a concession stand, 4H building, exhibition hall, stage, animal display barn, and a 160 foot open front exhibit area. The largest exhibit hall(Beaver Hall) was named after fair director, Beaver Williams. The Beaver Hall has been begun renovation projects in the past few years by first updating the kitchen, adding a large new window and soon replacing the ceiling tiles in the main floor area. Beaver Hall is frequently rented out for wedding receptions and family reunions.

The fair has been a good source a family entertainment and a place to exhibit great works of skillful craft and the fruits of agricultural labors.

Book Release

The Cameron County Historical Society is pleased to announce its latest book entitled "Cameron" by researchers Glenda (Neenan) Card and Dianne (Connelly) DeShong from the Lumber Twp Heritage Collection featuring early families such as; Spangler, Strawbridge, Huff, Richey and many more.

Many local folks contributed the creation of this book such as Jean (Schreffler) Burfield, Jim Miller, Guy Howlett, Francis Stuart, Suzanne (Sullivan) Murray, John Bower, Mo Johnson and so many more. The Village of Cameron touched the lives of so many that brought about much joy to those who still remain today to tell tales of her past.

"Cameron" covers much of what many of us still remember such as Jack's Place which was renamed by its new owners as the "Cameron Hotel." Big Rock swimming hole, her schools dating as far back as 1862. How about the Square Timber Race Track at Moateville. Hard to believe but it use to attract 500 spectators on a Sunday afternoon. It was managed by Don Bower with drivers such as; Morgan Stuart, Bill Howlett, Erg Murry, Moe Johnson and ticket sellers Alice Bower and Jean Burfield.

Included is a section on Frances (Schwab) Murray who we give credit to much of the inspiration of our book(s) it's through her memories that we were able to reconstruct much of the history of Cameron. Aunt Fan as she was often referred to gave us rare insights into the people and occupations that supported the community of Cameron. Her recollections of places and people were the basis of our research throughout our other two books; Cameron Lumbering and the Bradytown, Canoe Run and Chapman Hill books.

If you haven’t already gotten started on this wonderful historical series this is the perfect book to start with.

Book site locations: Barbara Moscato Library, Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Artisan Center in Emporium, and The Little Museum in Sterling Run .
