Nancy M. Umbenhauer



Nancy M. Umbenhauer, 78, of 15 Oak Grove Lane, Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Tuesday, (December 27, 2011) afternoon.
She was born December 22, 1933 in Emporium a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Stumpff Rutz.
On July 4, 1953 in Indiana she married the late Robert W. Umbenhauer.
Mrs. Umbenhauer garduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1951 and the Bradford School of Nursing in the class of 1953. She retired from Guy and Mary Felt Manor, where she worked for many years as the nursing supervisor and later became the adminstrator and held that position for many years. Early in her career she worked for Dr. Joseph Blackburns office, at Sylvania and several other facilities. She had been a member of the former Guy and Mary Felt Manor Auxilliary.

Mary ELizabeth Hornung Lewis, 95, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium died at the Manor on Thursday morning (December 22, 2011).
She was born April 25, 1916 in Emporium a daughter of the late George and Anna Glasl Hornung.
On July 13, 1939 in Emporium she married the late Lawrence Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker all of her life and a lifelong member of St. Mark Church. She enjoyed reading and flowers

Joel R. Matteson,

Joel R. Matteson, 36, of Emporium, PA, formerly of Galeton, PA, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, December 19, 2011 after a lengthy stay at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.

Born December 5, 1975 in Coudersport, PA, he was a son of Michael and Kathy (Youndt) Matteson who both survive.

He was a 1994 Graduate of Galeton High School. Joel had an amazing mind and was creative and imaginative. He loved to draw and sketch, enjoyed movies, was a Harley Davidson enthusiast, and had the gift of gab.

Surviving in addition to his parents, Mike and Kathy Matteson, are a brother, Jesse (Nadia) Matteson, State College, PA; paternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Richard and Ruth Matteson, Galeton; maternal grandmother, Jeanette Youndt, Emporium; and one nephew and three nieces.

Joel was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Doris Matteson and his maternal grandfather, William Youndt.

Friends may call at the Hess Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Collins Chapel, Galeton, on Friday, December 23, 2011 from 10:00-11:00am with Funeral Services following at 11:00am. The Rev. Karl W. O. Runser, III will officiate. Interment will be made in the West Hill Cemetery, Galeton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cameron County SPCA or to the American Heart Association.

Cash & Christmas presents stolen

Unknown actor(s) gained entry to an Emporium woman's residence by kicking open a rear door. Once inside, someone removed numerous items of value including $1,600.00 cash and numerous Christmas gifts.
The burglary occurred between Wednesday at 2:45 and 1:00 am on Thursday at the residence of Jamie Lynn Schatz located at 418 North Broad Street, across from the Municipal Building in Emporium Borough, according to a news release from Trooper Michael Smith at the Emporium Station.

Vivian L.Doerr, age 94, formerly of Niagara Falls, New York and Ormond  Beach, Florida, diedTuesday, December 13, 2011, in Sena Kean Manor, Smethport.
BornOctober 15, 1917 in Tionesta, she was the daughter of William and Rebecca MannLucas.  On March 18, 1960 in Niagara  Falls, NY she marriedFlorian Doerr who died May 24, 1997.
Havingrelocated to Emporium from Ormond  Beach, Mrs. Doerr had been a resident of this area for11 years.
Survivorsinclude: a son, Robert Westefield of Niagara Falls,NY; a daughter Marsha (Bob) Patros ofEmporium; a stepson, Florian (Trina) Doerr, Jr. of Columbia, SC;a stepdaughter, Arlene (Jack) Moore of Youngstown, NY; two grandchildren; fourgreat grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and several nieces andnephews.
In additionto her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, two sisters and fourbrothers.
There wereno visitations.
Burial willbe in Niagara Falls Memorial Park, Lewiston, NY.
Funeralarrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home,Emporium.

Duane A. Buerk



Duane A. Buerk, 50, of 905 Edgerly Lane, Pflugerville, Texas formerly of Emporium died unexpectedly at his residence in Pflugerville Wednesday (December 14, 2011) afternoon.
He was born September 26, 1961 in St. Marys a son of the late Roman "Romie" and Ruth Luchs Buerk.
Duane graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1979 and then attended the University of Texas majoring in electronics. He resided in Texas for the past 25 years. He worked at Abbott Laboratory/Hospira for 16 years as a warehouse Technician and specialist where he maintained a 99% inventory accuracy throughout the warehouse. He served on the Emergency Response Team for 16 years and completed the ECA Certification and was also an EMT. Duane was very knowledgeable in the stock market. He loved his family and enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing.

Robert C. Jack


Robert C. Jack, 86, a resident of Felt Manor Living,Emporium, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011, in his home.
Born September 4, 1925 in Ridgway, he was the son of Bruce and Myrtle Duffee Jack.  On July 18, 1953 in Ridgway he married Verle M. Jack who died March 5, 1997.  On June 27, 1998 in Emporium, he married Florence Anna Stoltz who survives.
Mr. Jack was a veteran of WWII having served as an electricians mate in the US Navy.
After returning home from the service he received a degree in electrical engineering from Penn State DuBois.
A resident of Emporium for 60 years, he was employedas an electronics engineer by GTE Sylvania in Emporium retiring in 1983. For many years he was a driver for the Cameron County Ambulance Service.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Churchin Emporium and a member of the church choir, Emporium Men’s Club,Cameron County Snowmobile Association, Bucktail RVers, the Singing Dutchmen of St Marys, Emporium Masonic Lodge #382 F&AM and he was a Shriner.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: a son, Kevin R.(Debbie) Jack of Driftwood; a daughter, Karen (Dan) Abbott of Bradford; five grandchildren; a brother, Clyde A.Jack of Ridgway, and several nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by seven step children, 26 step grandchildren and 7 great step grandchildren.

Visitations with video tribute will be held Friday,December 16 in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium from 4-7 pm at which time a Masonic Memorial Service will follow.
Funeral and Committal Services will be held at 11 am Saturday in the FirstUnited MethodistChurch, Emporium with theRev. Gary Atkinson, pastor,officiating.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Cameron CountyMemorial Detail.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery,Emporium.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the CameronCounty Ambulance Service, Felt Manor Living or Community Nurses Hospice.

Andew A. Richnafsky

Andew A. Richnafsky, 94, of 22 S. Cherry St, Emporium on died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium on Tuesday afternoon. (December 13, 2011)
He was born August 21, 1917 in Tower Hill, PA a son of the late Joseph and Anna Maria Pehur Richnafsky.
On May 2, 1959 in St. Mark Catholic Church, Emporium he married Patricia Russell Richnafsky, who Survives.
Mr. Richnafsky moved to Cameron County with the Civilian Conservation Corp's in the early 1940's. He then served with the US Army during WWII, for 5 years, with the 253rd Infantry Regiment. While in the service he received a Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, 6 Overseas Service bars, Purple Heart and European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. He retired from Sylvania in Emporium where he was a security guard over 32 years. He was a life member of the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW and the American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, Emporium, and the St. Mark Catholic Church. He enjoyed meeting his friends every morning for coffee and then went to the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library to read

Christmas In The Wilds

Last Saturday was a chilly day for all that ventured into downtown Emporium for the Christmas In The Wilds events.  Over 300 children and parents had breakfast with Santa in the fire hall.  Several vendors lined the streets selling hot chocolate, cookies, baked breads, Christmas wreaths and other items. At noon the CCHS marching band made its way through town. They were followed by Santa waving at everyone lining the streets.  It was a nice day to sample some homemade goods.

The Bauer girls are as pretty as the wreaths they sell !


The Sylvan Heritage Council sold breads & pottery.


The CCHS maching band is always a delight.

Christmas In The Wilds Is Sat., Dec 10th

Don't forget ~ Tomorrow, Saturday, Dec 10th, will be Christmas In The Wilds in Cameron County !Breakfast With Santa will be from 9 - 11 am at the Emporium Fire Hall.
The Christmas parade will begin at noon.
The First United Methodist Church of Emporium is sponsoring a cookie walk on December 10th from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Church Social Hall.
A Craft Show will be held on December 10th at the Emporium Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Sylvan Heritage Council will be selling delicious homemade breads and Westerwald Pottery !

3 Vehicle Crash on E Third Street

Police have released the details of a three vehicle crash that occured last Thursday at 6:55 pm on East Third Street in the  Emporium Borough.
Lisa J. Toy, 50, of Emporium, PA, was transported by Emporium Ambulance to Elk Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.Trooper Paul Mall Jr., in a news release, said the accident occurred as Toy's 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling west on East Third Street in Emporium Borough. Toy lost control of her vehicle and impacted a 2008 Ford F-250 which was parked and unattended. After impact, Toy's Cavalier continued to travel west and impacted a 2002 Grand Am which was parked and unattended. Her vehicle came to rest at the point of impact with the Grand Am.
Troopers charged Toy with Careless Driving.

Katherine G. Griffith



Katherine G. Griffith, 91, of Grove House, 436 Old W. Creek Rd, Emporium and formerly of 201 W. Fifth Street died at The Grove House, on Sunday morning. (December 4, 2011)
She was born November 30, 1920 in Sterling Run a daughter of the late Grant and Fannie Terriberry Hart.
On March 4, 1939 in Williamsport she married the late Charles Griffith.
Mrs. Griffith retired from Sylvania in 1982 with over 25 years of employment. She was a member of the Emporium Senior Center, where she was a volunteer and also volunteered for the Food Pantry for many years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and going to Casino's.

William Anson Mason



William Anson Mason, 93, of 58 Mason Run Rd., Driftwood died at his residence on Friday evening (December 2, 2011)
He was born August 31, 1918 in Sterling Run a son of the late J. Wright and Nancy Spence Mason.
On January 1, 1941 at his home on the Mason farm he married Ruthanna Madalene Stimpson Mason, who Survives.
Mr. Mason graduated from the former Emporium High School. He was a farmer most of his life. He was also a truck driver working at Mallory Lumber for many years. Years ago he served as a Cameron County Commissioner. He served on the former Gibson Township School Board for over 25 years and later on the Cameron County School Board several for years. He was a member of the Sterling Run United Methodist Church all of his life.
