Big Duck Appears in Downtown Emporium

Big Duck Appears in Downtown Emporium

The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office invaded by rubber ducks this week. It is all part of promoting the Firequacker Duck Derby during Weekend in the Wilds July 5 and 6. The inflatable duck peers from sunglasses on to East Fourth Street. The duck derby raises funds for the fireworks which will culminate the event. Ducks are adopted for $2 each or a 6-quack for $10. They will race Saturday July 6 at 3 pm from the intersection of Sixth and Broad Streets to the finish line. The winning paddler takes home $100, second place $75 and third $50. Ducks can be adopted at the chamber office until Saturday July 6 at 2pm.

Friday events planned for Weekend in the Wilds includes a pie and ice cream social, quilt show and music at the First Presbyterian Church in addition to the continuation of the book sale at the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library. Mountaineer Search and Rescue will host the Big Foot Hunt which begins at daybreak Saturday. Hunters have until 1pm to capture Big Foot, but must have a license to enter the hunt. Those licenses can be purchased at Lakeview Store, Sinnemahoning Tavern, Driftwood Saloon and Grill, or the chamber office. A Big Foot Calling contest will be held at 2pm, followed by awards to the successful hunters.

Saturday vendors will open booths which line East Fourth Street starting at 9am. The Emporium Senior Center will have an open house at its new location at the corner of Chestnut and Fourth Streets. “A few more food trucks are coming and a blacksmith will be demonstrating and selling items in the artist tent,” says chamber director Tina Solak.

At 7 Saturday night the Cameron County High School pool will host a night swim and the gates will open for parking at the football stadium. Fireworks will light the sky at dusk.
