Rotary News

Pat Kempher, President of the Cameron County Fair Association, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting July 10th. Pat spoke of the history of the fair and stated that “the Cameron County Fair is the smallest out of 114 fairs statewide.”

The mission of the fair is to educate the public about agriculture by showcasing people’s products. Our local fair was started in 1901 by the Cameron County Agricultural Association and was held at Keystone Park up on Keystone Manor. In 1917 there was a county wide flu epidemic and the fair didn’t start up again until 1967 when the Jaycees organized the fair at the Pine Street Field. In 1971, Henry Zimmer, leased the grounds to the Fair Association on Route 46 where it is held today. Pat gave may thanks to the Emporium Foundation who has helped them financially over the years, and to the public for their support in making the fair a success each year. The Parade of Stars is also a fundraiser of the association where they raise funds and give a scholarship of $250.00 each year. This year’s recipient was Alex Umble. The fair will be held August 5-11th, gates open at 5:00 pm with many fun activities and events. Also pictured is Elyse Umble, last year’s Miss Junior Fair Queen and Rotarian, Steve Straub.
