Rotary News

Rotarian, Tim Kinsler, introduced speaker, Pat Lewis, (right) at the Rotary luncheon March 28th. Pat gave an inspiring talk about his 40 years of coaching experiences. Pat grew up in Emporium, graduating from CCHS and then Clarion University with a degree in Elementary Education. Shortly after graduating from Clarion University, he received a job offer to teach 2nd grade at Woodland Elementary, along with the stipulation that he coach a high school girls basketball team.

Up to this time, no male teacher had ever taught a grade below 5th grade or coached girls basketball. After many ups and downs, he wound up with a winning JV team. After Mr. Kinsler retired and resigned as the boy’s Junior High coach, Pat filled the position. The first year was disheartening with a 0-15 record, second year 1-17 and he thought of resigning, but stayed on. Pat thought back to 7th grade when he tried out for basketball and was cut, then in 8th grade made the team, but in 9th was cut again from the team and remembered Mr. Kinsler telling him “Pat, you just didn’t put in the time”. Pat said “when I got older, I understood and respected what Mr. Kinsler had said back then.” After that, Pat got the team motivated and they started winning 70% of their games. Pat’s philosophy as a coach has been “putting self above others” and emphasized how athletics are so important teaching youth following:
How to manage time efficiently
Body language speaks volumes
How to deal with pressure and stress
How to win with class and fail with dignity
Life is not fair and there will be tough times
Success requires sacrifice, preparation and hard work
Know your strengths and weaknesses
To be a leader you need to also be a follower
Must discipline yourself as only you are responsible for yourself
Respect everyone and working together achieves more

7th Annual Bunny Hop

Spreading the word for friend Taylor Frank and all those who have every been touched by anyone suffering from a brain aneurysm.

" The bunny hop idea popped into my head when all I wanted to do was tell the world what to look for when they or their family members are experiencing the symptoms of a brain aneurysm rupture. My family and I felt blindsided by my mom's experience and didn't ever want anyone to go through what we had.

When I was 17, I with the help of my amazing family and other families affected started the first ever Bunny Hop for Brain Aneurysm Awareness. Since then, we have raised over $75,000 for the The Brain Aneurysm Foundation and have had over 600 participants at our event. I am baffled by the outstanding support our community shows when they really care about a cause.

We may have not reached the whole world yet, but we are getting the word out. I hope that every year we touch more and more lives and that we can continue educate on brain aneurysms. Unfortunately, my mother isn't here to see what an honor Elk and surrounding areas have brought in her memory, but I hope that we will save even one person from this horrible ailment.

Please join me and some amazing people I've met along the way for our 7th Annual Bunny Hop!

Please consider supporting this cause! Save the date - APRIL 15TH @ Benzinger Park, Vine Road, St. Mary's, PA 15857

Early School Trivia of Cameron County

I love learning, reading and remembering the history of Cameron County. Here is a little early school trivia compiled from the Cameron County Genealogy Project. Personally I feel our school should offer a 9 week class on the History of Cameron County. Early School Trivia

Although records were not preserved locally education dates back before the incorporation of the county

There is a difference of opinion as to the location of the first. The following is credited from a history of Emporium traced to Chicago

First teacher in all probability was Miss Elisa Dodge who taught the three R’s in a new frame barn at the mouth of North Creek on 1817

She was followed by William Boyd who taught in a Log house that had been built for a dwelling in Lumber Township in 1818

A log House was constructed above Emporium in 1819 Students studied under John Chadwick who taught 1819 -1820

Miss Jedidah Freeman taught the summer term 1820 and Leonard Freeman a winter term in 1820

The first schools of Higher education were established in Sinnamahoning in 1864-65 by John Brooks.

The school was suspended in 1873.

In 1866 Mrs. J. B. Johnson opened a select school in Felt’ Block

In1888 it was reported that were 42 schools in the county with an enrollment of 1427 pupils. Average salary for teachers was Male $49.47 and Female $33.78 monthly

Emporium at that time employed six teachers and enrollment of 373 pupils. Average Salary was Male $85.71 and Female $35.00 per month

County had Four High Schools maintained by the borough of Emporium, Driftwood and Shippen Township

First class to graduate from Emporium High School was in 1889 under the principal of H.H. Weber

High School in Shippen was established in 1907 in charge of H.B.Hourihan.

No records on Driftwood High School that was closed in 1916 due to the shortage of students/

The Emporium Schools are indebted to W. H Howard for a three hundred volume library and a piano. Josiah Howard contributed valuable additions to the library. Other contributors were B.G. Erskine, Guy S. Felt and many others.

Sterling Run School built in 1930 now houses the Cameron County Little Museum.

According to some authorities the first school was built on the Mason farm in 1820 with Dennis Lynch as first teacher.

Consolidation began 1924 in Emporium and secondary students from Driftwood and Sinnamahoning traveled by train to Emporium. Pa railroad ran local trains to accommodate . This was continued until 1941 when World War II forced the Railroad to abandon this practice. The students wer the bussed to Emporium.

Emporium Hardwoods Will Rebuild

EMPORIUM — Owners of a Cameron County lumber operation heavily damaged by fire last week are going to rebuild, according to county officials.

Emporium Hardwoods, located on Route 120 just south of Emporium, saw damage estimated between $7 million to $10 million in the early morning fire on Saturday.

Cameron County Commissioners stated that the business, owned by Rossi Corp., headquartered in Middletown, Connecticut, will be rebuilt, and some of the displaced workers will be brought on to help with cleanup efforts.

Representatives of the company were on the scene Saturday and spoke to a number of employees who had gathered at the site to see what they could do to help. Schedules are being worked out to allow employees who are able to come in and assist and continue to collect a paycheck. Eligible workers will qualify for unemployment while the damaged side of the facility is rebuilt.

Commissioner Phil Jones said county officials immediately contacted state representatives and the Governor’s Action Team has been made available to help with issues that may arise.

Commissioner Lori Reed said she was moved by the efforts of community members who brought food and donated items for the dozens of emergency responders called in to battle the blaze.

“I just want to say ‘kudos’ to our volunteers,” she said. “It was unbelievable to see so many community members who stepped up and brought cookies or other items to the fire hall. The behind-the-scenes people made me very proud to live in Cameron County.”

Commissioners stated that several local businesses also made donations to ensure the volunteers had enough food and drink to get through the four-hour ordeal.

Fire crews have been recalled to the scene at least twice to deal with rekindling issues. On Tuesday, a pile of wood chips was reported to be smoldering, sending firefighters back to the scene. Several hotspots are still an issue and have to be closely monitored, officials said.

The fire broke out at around 4 a.m. Saturday. Only a few employees were at the location at the time. At least one was serving as a night watchman, and others were beginning to trickle in to begin shift work later in the morning.

Firefighters from the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene and immediately made calls to bring in other companies for assistance. In all, 12 fire companies from multiple counties were called in to fight the fire or serve on standby during the fire.

Emporium Hardwoods is one of the county’s top employers, with more than 100 workers. The operation is split into two sides, one dealing with “green,” or unseasoned, wood, and the other handling kiln-dried wood. The fire destroyed most of the green side, but thanks to the efforts of first responders, the kiln side, stacks of wood and storage areas were not damaged.

Damages to the green side were extensive, with the main building that houses operations being described by witnesses as “little more than a shell.” A number of large, costly pieces of equipment housed within were destroyed, as well, though efforts were made to remove several forklifts and movable equipment before the building was engulfed by flames

State police are investigating the matter — a press release indicates that a state fire marshal, Trooper John Whitcomb, discovered the origin point of the fire but he believes no foul play was involved.

Preliminary reports indicate the fire was an accident

WYKOFF RUN TO BE CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS

WYKOFF RUN TO BE CLOSED FOR TWO WEEKS

FROM PA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 16, 2017

Wykoff Bridge Job to Start Late this Month Two-week detour will be in effect, March 27 through April 10

Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin a Cameron County bridge replacement project on Monday, March 27. The bridge spans a branch of Wykoff Run on Route 2001 (Wykoff Run Road)) in Gibson Township, about one mile northeast of the Quehanna Highway (Route 2006) intersection. Replacing the bridge will allow PennDOT to remove it from Cameron County’s structurally deficient list.

A two-week detour will be in place from March 27 through April 10. The detour is necessary to remove the existing box culvert and set the new structure. The 38-mile detour will direct drivers to use Route 2001, Route 2006 (Quehanna Highway), Route 555, and Route 120. The detour schedule has been accelerated to lessen impacts to area fishermen.

Once the detour is lifted, remaining work will take place under traffic. On average, 375 vehicles move through this area each day. PennDOT expects the project to be complete on April 21.

All work on this replacement project is weather and schedule dependent. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $500,000 project.

Drivers are reminded to move through work zones with caution, obey official detour signs and posted speed limits, and always buckle up.

Drivers can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.

April 1st, 2017 Largest downriver paddling event in Pennsylvania!

Cameron County Canoe &  Kayak Classic

Test your strength and racing know-how as you course down one of the largest downriver paddling events in the state!

Named 2014 PA Wilds Event of the Year!

April 1st, 2017 Largest downriver paddling event in Pennsylvania!

"Cameron County - Clean, Fresh, and Beautiful"

Each year the Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic committee selects a new theme.
This year, the theme is "Cameron County - Clean, Fresh, and Beautiful."

We are excited to share with you such a significant event in one of the most beautiful areas of Pennsylvania. The scenic and challenging course is a 12-mile stretch of the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek which runs from the Emporium Country Club to the town of Driftwood. It is mostly flat with some class one white water and a few whirlpools. Water levels have a drastic effect on the difficulty of the course.

The 2017 race awards will be handmade paddle plaques which will be given to participants over a wide array of classes. The award ceremony and dinner is held at the Emporium Firehall.

For more information about the event and registration, visit CanoeClassic.org

A note from Director Randy Bailey

Hello everyone,   Welcome to the 2017 edition Of Cameron County’s Canoe and Kayak Classic. I am a bit behind getting everything together. We were having some issues with our web blog. I need to thank Chris Luckenbill for helping me get it figured out and also many other issues over the past 15 or so years. Has it been that long ? At this point I do not have a whole lot of changes to report. If you have been with us in the past you know the Gig. I need to still confirm that all will be in place the same as last year.

We will not have available to us this year an alternate venue as the Lake at Sinn State Park is undergoing a dredging project. If we find ourselves in an extreme situation (No water to paddle downstream) I may just set up a small loop course at the start area. practice your buoy turns!!. And the other extreme, Flood stage we may opt to the following weekend. Lets be hopeful for a nice day and good water level.

I have paddled the course and for once I have no major issues to address in the river there are a few branches that I need to cut but for the most part the river is open. I will update on a regular basis now up to the event date with particulars. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing everyone back and new faces as well come April 1. Randy
