Byron H Horning

Byron H. Horning, Jr., 92, of 210 E. Allegany Ave., Emporium, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Tuesday (April 11, 2017) afternoon following a brief illness. He was born September 12, 1924 in Emporium, PA a son of the late Byron H. and Lola Schwab Horning, Sr. On January 14, 1950 in Emporium he married the late Doris Munch Horning.

Byron graduated from Emporium High School. He attended trade school in Williamsport and then moved to Erie to apprentice at General Electric. He then join the US Navy and served during World War II. He moved back to Emporium from Erie in 1950 to work for his parents. He then began working at Sylvania where he worked until retiring in November 1989. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and the Chairman of the Deacon Board, a moderator of the church, a Sunday school teacher and head usher. He was a charter member of Cameron County Little League. He served as a coach in Little League and was an umpire for over 50 years. He was a volunteer fireman for many years and also served on Emporium Borough Council. He was a past president on the board of the Mid-Cameron Authority and also served on the Board of Directors of the Newton Cemetery. He was very active in the Emporium Lodge #382 of F & A.M. where he became Worshipful Master in 1957 and then again in 2007. He served as secretary of the lodge from 1959 to 2007 and also secretary of Emporium Chapter #227. He was a member of the Coudersport Consistory and the Zem Zem Shrine Temple in Erie. Byron enjoyed eating lunch at the Senior Center, playing cards with his friends, attending all sporting events and recitals, and spending time with his dog, Soda.

Byron is survived by four sons, Robert Horning, China; Ronald (Grace) Horning, Emporium; Russell J. (Michelene) Horning, Shinglehouse; Randall (Anne) Horning, Emporium; two daughters, Barbara (Joe) Palumbo, Emporium; Bonnie (Tom) Spehalski, Emporium; 16 Grandchildren and 24 Great Grandchildren, one niece and five nephews.

He was preceded in death byhis parents, Byron H. and Lola Schwab Horning, his wife, Doris Munch Horning who died in 1995, brother, Edward L. Horning, Sr.

Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 424 N. Broad Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (April 15, 2017) at 11:00 AM with Rev. James R. Horton, Jr., Pastor, First Baptist Church and Rev. Russell J. Horning, his son officiating. 

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., Emporium on Friday from 5:00-8:00 PM where a Masonic Service will be held at 5:30 PM and the American Legion will hold a service at 7:30 PM.

 Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery where a military service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.
