Chamber Announces New Event

A new event planned for January is the culmination of students, the chamber and Emporium Country Club. The first ever Cameron County Cardboard Classic will take place January 23 at the Emporium Country Club from 11am-4pm. “ Last year elementary students at Woodland Elementary School told teachers they wanted something to do in the winter and adults were listening,” says Tina Johns Solak, executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.

The Emporium Country Club will be turned into a winter carnival with the highlight a sledding contest. Everyone is invited to make a sled only using cardboard, duct tape, glue and paper. Age groups: 8 and under, 9-12, 13-18 and adults will be judged on originality and the distance traveled by their creation. A two-person snowman building contest and creature building contest will also be held. In addition, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating are planned. “If the weather does not cooperate for ice skating, the pond will become home for a polar plunge,” according to Johns Solak.

The Cameron County Girl and Boy Scouts will be offering food for purchase and a fire will be built to keep participants warm. If the weather does not cooperate we will have a snow date of January 30. The chamber is looking for winter enthusiasts who are willing to help the day of the event. Anyone interested is asked to contact the chamber office at 814-486-4314

Born in Lyndonville, VT on December 3, 1930, he was the son of Daniel Pierce Sanderson and Queenie Libby Sanderson. Richard grew up working on his family’s farm and later served in the Vermont National Guard. He built his professional life in the fields of Accounting and Real Estate.  At Emporium’s Keystone Airport, he found lasting friendships with others. His work was vital to the life of Emporium’s Keystone Airport but despite years of effort by him and others to prevent its closing, Emporium’s airport was permanently closed. When Richard flew his plane from the closed airport to its new home in St. Mary’s, his was the last flight to take off from that field. He continued to enjoy sharing stories and talking about flying until his death. Richard loved his family; especially his “Wifey”, Lorraine. Together since their teens, she was the greatest blessing and love in his life.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years and his three daughters and their husbands;
Carol and Chuck Shelton of Franklin, NC,
Patti and Loren Plisco of Woodstock, GA, and
Cheri and Doug Crotty of Cornelius, NC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Richard’s memory to Angel Home Care and Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, NC, 28734.

We are so grateful for the many years we had with the man we call husband, Dad, and PopPop. We are truly blessed that we were loved by him.

CCHS Music Booster Meeting

This is an abbreviated form of the minutes from the December 8th  Booster meeting:

*Every day supplies are running low (Kleenex, band aides, germ ex, etc.) and need to be replaced. After a short discussion it was decided that Mr Sensenig will send home a letter asking for donations to replenish.

*The winter twirlers are going to put up a table at the Christmas concert to sell the leftover CC pins.

*District band: instead of separate bags for each visiting student, it was decided that the boosters will supply “goodie bags” for each school. The band directors can distribute the snacks to each of the kids in the hotel rooms.

*Fruit sale went well. Unloading and sorting went really well
. *The pizza sale stuff is in the office. The sale will be started over Christmas Break.

*The Christmas Concert is December 17th @ 7:00pm. . Christmas in the Wilds Parade is December 12th @ 12:00 noon. Kids are to report to the band room by 11am. The District band festival is January 22 & 23. We will need a few parents on the afternoon/evening of the 22nd to check in with Mr Sensenig and to set up for the banquet
. We will also need ticket takers (6) and banquet workers (3) for the 23rd.

*Mr Sensenig has been asked by the Pearl Harbor Committee to be the head of an “honor band” from Pennsylvania to march in the 75th anniversary parade. This will be a mix of kids from area high school bands. It is not a project the Boosters will be directly involved in. More to come on this later.

*Parade of Stars is February 20th. We will be doing the Taste Table again. More on this next month.

*The Band was asked to ring the Salvation Army bells on December 21-23 from Noon to 7:00. The kids were asked to go home and check their schedules so they can sign up for hour-long shifts

. *The next Band trip is tentative for Walt Disney World in the spring of the 2017/2018 school year.

Marching season may be over, but music season is never over.
Come out to the next music boosters meeting and find out what happens.

*Next Boosters’ meeting will be Tuesday, January 10th @ 5:30

Cameron County School District

The School Board meeting for the month of December will be held on December 10th at 7 p.m.

Cameron County Community Chest 2016 Fund Drive – December Update

We are nine weeks into the 2016 fund drive. We have had a great start. Through Dec. 4th, we collected $8995.50 toward our $20,200 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2016.

Watch for our monthly updates.
Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to.
This month’s feature will be the Package Team.

A group of Rich Valley women started the Package Team over 20 years ago. The team currently sends out around 85 packages (a little piece of Cameron County for Christmas) each year to our local service men, women and reservists. Boxes are filled with snacks, coffee, toiletries, paper, pens, newspapers, playing cards, Christmas ornaments made by the folks at Guy and Mary Felt Manor, letters from the kids at Woodland Elementary. Some items are donated by local businesses. Other items are purchased. Postage is the largest cost.
If you would like to find out more about the Package Team, get your Service Person on the list, or make a donation to Package Team, Please contact Karen Schatz at 486-0573.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager. Help to support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team,
 and the Garden Club.
