Play The Game And Everyone Wins

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce hosting a scavenger hunt during Shop Small Saturday November 28. Shoppers will visit businesses in the Emporium area and answer questions, sing, dance, find hidden clues while shopping for holiday gifts! “The business owners are very creative and this event will provide a fun time for shoppers,” according to Tina Johns Solak, executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.

Shoppers can pick up the clue sheet from participating businesses starting November 16. Businesses will have signage in windows indicating they are hosting the scavenger hunt. Following the hunt, shoppers can return the completed sheet to the chamber office to be entered into a drawing for gift certificates.

New this year will be the addition of a Make-it-Take-it hosted by the First Baptist Church on Broad Street in Emporium. Children will make gifts for family members while parents shop. The gifts will even be wrapped, ensuring that adults don’t peek till Christmas! The event is free 10-noon. A soup lunch will be made available for a price following the Make-it-Take-it.

Shopping local is very important for small communities. “If shoppers head to big box stores, they spend their money at a place where community is not their priority plus they risk duplication of gifts,” says Solak. For every dollar spent at a local hardware, grocery, or retail shop 45 cents comes back to the community. Purchase it elsewhere and 15 cents comes back, and if you purchase online, no money comes back locally.

For those that live out of the area and would like to support Cameron County, the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce web site at www.cameroncountychamber.org is offering a gift buying section. All items are made by artists in the region and 100% of the money stays in small communities. They can be purchased using the online store, or reserved with a phone call for pick up.

This season shop local and keep the money local.
