Historical Walk through the Calder Brick Works

Cameron County Historical Society is hosting a Historical Walk through the Calder Brick Works on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Steve Vaneerden, property owner and history buff, will guide the tour through the remains of what once was a thriving industrial community. Scattered bricks and some subtle evidence of the booming town still remain. Calder had 12-15 houses, a school, a post office, a boarding house, an office and several plant buildings. On May of 1896, bricks began production from clay that came from Dent's Run. The Calder Brick Works bricks were used for the first paved street in Emporium, though only a portion of 4th Street. Other large contracts kept the brick works booming for many years. The brick works closed about 1919. Local history and nature lovers are invited to tour the area where the Calder brick Works once maintained a community all of its own.

The hike should last approximately 2 hours. There will be some steep slopes, muddy and some uneven or rough terrain so appropriate attire, sturdy shoes and insect repellant is suggested.

Cancellation, if required due to inclement weather, will be announced on WLEM radio. All interested hikers will meet at the Cameron pull-off (by Hunt's Run) at 10am for instructions and potential car pooling. This no-cost hike is sponsored by Cameron County Historical Society and is open the the public.
