Cleaning Up Emporium

The long winter is coming to an end and time to clean up the winter debris.

Clean up Emporium will begin Tuesday April 22 when volunteers from the Emporium Fire Department will wash the sidewalks and Route 120 from Chestnut to Maple Streets.  Those attending events that evening are asked to not park along the street in those areas.

Saturday April 26 volunteers will clean up downtown Emporium.  Projects include the mini-park, vacant store front windows, and picking up litter along West Creek Rails to Trails. The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce will coordinate the projects.  “Volunteers and those with project ideas are encouraged to call the office,” says executive director Tina Johns Solak, “the number of projects tackled will depend on the number of volunteers.”

Trail Town Study Results

One year ago more than a dozen residents of Cameron County met at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office and discussed the future of Emporium, Driftwood, Sterling Run and Sinnemahoning. Cathy McCollom a well known trail town developer led the group on a tour of Emporium discussing amenities sought by trail users.

McCollom will be back in Emporium Wednesday night to present her findings and suggestions for the populated areas of the county. The meeting is open to the public and will start at 7pm at the chamber office at 34 East Fourth Street. Executive Director Tina Johns Solak encourages business owners, residents and municipal officials to attend the meeting.

A Greenways Plan developed by North Central Regional Planning and Development identified Driftwood and Sinnemahoning as trail hubs and Emporium as a trail town. The funding for the trail town study was provided by a DCNR grant administered by North Central Regional and Planning.

“The planned work on the West Creek Rails to Trails has the potential to bring hundreds of visitors to Emporium“, says Johns Solak. “Having a study focusing on trail amenities will be a helpful tool to our existing businesses. Owners may find ways to expand and of course the document and planning will help recruit new businesses.”

High School Students to Explore Penn State Water Science

High School Students to Explore Penn State Water Science

The Cameron County Conservation District collaborated with Penn State Extension Water Resources Educator, Jim Clark, to secure a seventy-nine hundred dollar grant from the Headwaters Research, Conservation, and Development Council

The grant funds, which must be executed in the Sinnemahoning Watershed, will pay for a water science youth program. Several high school students from the Cameron County High School will be given the opportunity to work with Penn State Water Scientists to collect water samples from the Emporium, PA, area. The samples will be analyzed for emerging contaminants and several other parameters.
The students will then have the opportunity to travel to Penn State, visit the Penn State Water Lab and the actual emerging contaminates research lab where their water samples will be analyzed. The selected students will be asked to develop a PowerPoint presentation on the issue of emerging contaminates in water and what they have learned during the project. The PowerPoint will be shared with other high school students and the Cameron County community.

What a good way to keep our youth involved in Cameron County !

Late Winter Storm

A late-winter storm system will impact Central PA during the mid-week period. Moderate to heavy snow accumulations are possible across north-central PA (mainly north/northwest of I-80). Some mixed precipitation is also possible over this area. Current indications are for mainly rain over the southeast zones including the Lower Susquehanna Valley.

We must stress that this storm is still about 3 days out so the forecasts are subject to change, but this is our latest thinking at this time. Overall confidence is average with the forecast details - including specific amounts - still uncertain..

“Spring Honey Bee Assessment and Care”

PA-WAgN presents:
“Spring Honey Bee Assessment and Care”
Wednesday April 9th from 10AM to 2:30PM
Wiley Apiary on the Penn State Campus
University Park, PA

With all the issues affecting honeybees today, it is important to monitor hives closely. Maryann Frazier, Senior Research Associate at Penn State will show participants how to assess the post-winter health of hives, prep hives for a new season, feed bees until the pollen is plentiful and install nukes or packages of bees. Participants will open and "read" hives and assess feeding needs, queen health and size of hives to insure strong hives for the coming season. Maryann will also discuss recent research focusing on monitoring and managing mites in the hive. She will discuss whether nukes or packages work best and where to order these as well as new queens.
Registration will be limited so that all participants will have a chance to work with the hives. Veils and gloves will be provided but attendees are encouraged to bring a brimmed straw hat, wear long pants & sleeves and closed shoes as well as light colored clothing.
Maryann Frazier is an Extension Specialist in apiculture and is one of the instructor's on PSU's on-line Beekeeping 101 course. She works extensively with other colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region to develop an IPM approach to control honey bee diseases and mites. She is involved with ongoing research on the Colony Collapse Disorder affecting honey bees. She has also co-authored many Extension publications on bees.
The $15.00 registration fee includes lunch and materials.

This event was organized in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Women’s Agricultural Network at Penn State with funds by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture Grant #2012-49400-19602.
