Nelson Haas Named Artist of the Month and More

Cameron County artist Nelson Haas named Artist of the Month for May.  The retired state police trooper has also been named by the PA Wilds Planning Team as artist for 2013.  Haas is self taught and enjoys using pen and ink to capture all things in the PA Wilds.  From flowers to animals and even the tools used in hunting, fishing and trapping, Haas has sketched the items! 

 Each week the Cameron County Echo runs a drawing by the artist, who also was the impetus for the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce to add consignment artwork to its location.  Inside Haas sells walking sticks, original and reproduction artwork. 

 Haas has a busy month, as he will lead Cameron County High School art students on a native flower walk and drawing class.  At the end of May Haas will take part in the bioblitz at Sinnemahoning State Park, as he will lead a group on a wildflower count.

 Stop in the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center to see Haas’  work.  The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center is open 10-4  Monday-Friday Tuesday night 6:30-9:30 and Saturday 9-1.                                            

 

 

 

Albert G. "George" Connelly

Albert G. "George" Connelly, 71, of 44 Outback Dr., Emporium, died at his residence, Emporium on Friday (April 26, 2013) evening following a brief illness.
He was born December 16, 1941 in Swissvale, PA a son of the late James and Wilhelmina Burger Connelly.
On September 18, 1970 in Olean, NY he married Jacquelyn Lindsey Connelly, who survives.

 Mr. Connelly graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1959. He served with the US Air Force from 1959 to 1963 in Topeka, Kansas and in the Phillipines. He retired from Ceromet in Anaheim, CA where he worked for over 35 years. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, Third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #990, Emporium, American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, Emporium and Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW, Emporium. He enjoyed anything outdoors, especially hunting and camping. He also enjoyed family gatherings.

Traffic Accident On West 120

This morning, a  motor vehicle accident on Rt 120 W  caused an electrical outage affecting West Creek, Moore Hill, Rich Valley Road, and the Cameron County Elementary school.  The accident occurred at approximately 6:35 am when a white pick up truck exited the highway and struck a tree. 
Traffic was interrupted while the Emporium Ambulance, Cameron County Fire Department, State Police and emergency personnel assisted at the scene. Electrical service was restored within 2 hours and details of the crash are unknown at this time.

Cameron County Chamber Unveils New Logo

A windstorm last spring damaged the awning on the building rented by the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.  This week signage installed includes a new logo for the chamber.  “Now the logo is clean and spells out what role the chamber serves, businesses,” according to executive director Tina Johns Solak.  That new tagline reads ‘Your business starts here’. 

 The numerous colors of the old logo made color printing on t-shirts and other items cost prohibitive.  Johns Solak promises the new logo will soon appear on numerous items, including the web site and event posters.

Music Returns to the Coffee House at St Marks Church

 

Father Paul  Siebert and friends will present an evening of music at St Marks Catholic Church May 5.  The date coincides with Cinco de Mayo, so of course the music and decorations will have a unique twist!

 The Coffee House event begins at 6:45pm at O’Connell Hall. 

 Father Paul will be joined on stage by musicians from throughout the region.  Dave Foote will share his percussion talent and is from St Marys.   The Feroz brothers sing, and play various instruments, they include Dan from Oil City, Ron from Titusville and Frank who is preparing for a national tour, Ron Tusing from Cameron County will tickle the ifovy keys of his keyboard!  “We are lucky to have Frank Feroz commit since he is preparing for a gig Mothers Day Weekend, when he will warm up the glass harp with Phil Keaggy,” says Father Paul.

 The musicians admit they love the 60’s and 70’s but promise to throw in other tunes and of course lots of laughter and snacks too! 

 The event is free, but seating is limited. 

 Sit back and enjoy a night of fun and free entertainment.  Jazz, classic rock and folk songs are on tap.

During Saturdays Clean Up Day, the Sylvan Heritage Council spruced up the landscaping areas surrounding the "Welcome to Emporium" signs.

Vendors And Events Lining UP For Weekend In The Wilds

Mark your calendars for July 5 and 6 in Emporium!  Starting Friday night you can enjoy music and an old fashion ice cream social, then Saturday get up bright and early to enjoy all the fun hunting for Big Foot. After spending the day in the woods, come back to Emporium and listen to music, stroll among the vendors and support non-profit organizations by filling your tummy full of good eats!  If you still have energy, head to the Cameron County High School Swimming Pool and cool off.  When the sun goes down you are ready to watch the fireworks light the sky!

 

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Tina Johns Solak says there will be a few changes as the weekend events continue to grow locations and timing is tweaked.  “We heard many people ask why the downtown activities ended so early when the fireworks did not start till 10pm, so this year the artists and vendors will be open 9am-6pm.  That means the high school bleachers and parking will open at 7pm for the fireworks.”  Also new this year will be that the swimming pool will be open all day and through the showing of the fireworks!  Imagine cooling off in the pool watching the skies explode in color!

 

Plenty of activities are available for children, and a new event for children of all ages, will be an elk bugling contest.  Representatives of the Keysone Elk Country Alliance will judge the contest.  “This is a great way to practice before the Elk Expo set for August at the Elk Country Visitor Center,” according to Johns Solak.

Robert “Poopsy” Peters

Robert “Poopsy” Peters, 74, Mercer Street, Wilcox, died at home on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, after a short illness.
He was born May 17, 1938 in St. Marys, the son of the late George and Helen (McAlee) Peters.

 He married Margaret "Maggie" (Zelt) and she preceded him in death in 2006.
He lived in Johnsonburg most of his life and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School. He worked with the Johnsonburg Borough for 28 years and was a member of Holy Rosary Church and Central Hose Company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

 He is survived by four children, Robert Peters, Jr. of Florida, Barbara Malobicky of Wilcox, William “Raz” Peters of Wilcox, and George Peters of Emporium; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joanne Dragone of Johnsonburg.

 In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Biarowski and Dorothy Liscinski.

 Funeral services for Robert “Poopsy” Peters will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at the Ubel Funeral Home, Johnsonburg, with Father David Wilson officiating.

 Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation.

Pat Lewis Named PSU Co-Ed Golf Coach

Chancellor Melanie Hatch and Athletic Coordinator Ken Nellis have announced plans to add a men's and women's golf team to the list of intercollegiate athletic programs at Penn State DuBois.  The co-ed team will be coached by Pat Lewis, who is also the Penn State DuBois women's basketball coach. Lewis has served as golf coach at Cameron County High School for twelve years.  He guided the Cameron County women’s golf program to three consecutive undefeated seasons as well as three Penn-York Golf titles from 2005-2007.

 

The golf team will compete in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) and the USCAA National Championship event.  There are currently seven other campuses in the PSUAC with golf squads. The team will compete in the fall season, with matches starting in September.

John E. Rickard, 49, of 139 Elm St., Sinnemahoning, PA formerly of Altoona died at his residence on Thursday (April 18, 2013) morning following a extended illness.
He was born October 9, 1963 in Portage, PA a son of William Rickard, Sinnamahoning and the late Helen Grum Rickard.
John graduated from Alltoona High School. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. John enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

She was born June 10, 1920 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late Cyril and Bessie Burroughs Lewis. On October 25, 1937 in Emporium, PA she married the late Lavern Wheaton She was the owner of June's Hair Salon in Emporium for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Sam F. Prosper

Sam F. Prosper, 62, South Main Street, DuBois, died Friday, April 12, 2013.
Born June 9, 1950, in St. Marys, he was a son of the late Anthony and Dorothy Raffaele Prosper.
He married Bea Furman Prosper Sept. 18, 1971. She survives.

He worked at Ideal Products in Sykesville for many years, becoming the owner in 1999.
He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Sykesville Lions Club.

He is also survived by a son, Jim Prosper and his wife Carrie of DuBois; a daughter, Megan Prosper Shermer of Falls Creek; two brothers, John Prosper and his wife Aloma and Tom Prosper, both of Emporium; a sister, Ann Prosper of Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren: Isaac Prosper and Lexi and Luke Shermer.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, from the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home, DuBois. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, from St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Dan Kresinski celebrant. Harvey G. Wagner, Sr

Harvey G. Wagner, Sr. 73, of 3447 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium, PA died at Kane Lutheran Home, Kane, PA on Sunday (April 14, 2013) morning following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 16, 1939 in Danville, PA a son of the late John A. and Helen Miller Wagner.
On Aug 22, 1959 he married Nancy Patterson Wagner, who survives.

 Mr. Wagner and his wife Nancy, whom he met in college, were married over 53 years. He graduated from Danville High School, Juniata College and received his masters from Bucknell University. He retired, after over 42 years, from the Cameron County High School where he was an american history teacher. He loved teaching his students, gardening in his perennial garden, raising his dogs and spending time at his beloved home and property, both in Emporium and Avon, NC. Harvey was very proud of his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Emporium.

Kermit M. McLarren, 86, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of 1462 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium on Saturday (April 13, 2013) morning.
He was born February 2, 1927 in Philipsburg, PA a son of the late Paul and Grace Reams McLarren.
On November 29, 1946 in Christian Alliance Church Parsonage, Oceala Mills, PA he married the late Grace Smith McLarren.
Mr. McLarren and his wife Grace were married over 60 years. He had retired in 1989 from GKN where he had worked for many years. He was a member of the Emporium Lodge #382, F.and A.M. and enjoyed woodworking. He and his wife Grace were crowned King and Queen of Guy & Mary Felt Manor in February 2007.

Joyce Gayle Holjencin

Joyce Gayle Holjencin, 70, formerly of Emporium, passed away Saturday (April 6, 2013) at Sena-Kean Manor in Smethport.

 

Born May 13, 1942, in Crosscreek, PA , Joyce was the daughter of the late Everett and Ruth Orrick.  On June 2, 1960, in Coalport, PA, she married Thomas Holjencin, who passed away on August 24, 2006.

 

She was a 1960 graduate of Beccaria-Coalport-Irvona High School, Coalport, PA.  She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and crafting, and spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.  Upon raising their family, Joyce and her husband spent their golden years enjoying the beaches and weather of Wilmington, NC, where they often entertained family and friends from the “north”.

 

She is survived by four children: Samuel and Cindy (Provencher) Holjencin of Simpsonville, SC; Joseph J. and Christine (Dempsey) Holjencin of Emporium; Hope Griffith of Wilmington, NC; and Thomas J. and Jeanmare (Guloien) Holjencin, Jr. of Emporium; ten grandchildren: T.J., Shawn, Heidi, Charles, Jarek, Joseph C., Paul, Lucie, Amelia, and Sally; a great-granddaughter, Adeleide; a brother, Samuel Orrick (Louise) and a sister, Carolyn Misiura (John), both of Coalport, PA; a sister-in-law, Jane Orrick of Brunswick, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a brother, James Orrick, and a grandson, Matthew Holjencin.

39th Annual Canoe & Classic

Paddlers, Friends Family and Spectators

 

I would like to invite everyone to the 2013, 39th edition of the Cameron County Canoe & Kayak Classic. This years theme is Natures Footprint. I am very hopeful we will be back on the Driftwood branch only mother nature will make that call. A few new things for this year ALL paddlers must wear an approved life vest. and each boat must have a sounding device ( whistle ). All boats will exit the right side of the river after crossing the finish line in Driftwood to better handle safety. The folks at Mt County Energy has offered to let use there area for shuttle parking. That will eliminate the need to carry boats across the highway. I have enclosed this years poster and registration form. I look forward to seeing everyone and if anyone has any questions please let me know.
