From Deer Seasons Past

This photo was given to me awhile back. Published in "The Beam" during Nov & Dec 1953, the photo in the upper left corner shows a car filled  4th street in Emporium during deer season.  Thats my grandfather, Joe Walker, in the lower right corner.  Joe boarded hunters in his home and camps every hunting season.

Traffic Accident In Boro

An  Emporium woman was life flighted to the Altoona Hospital with moderate injuries last Friday after her car crossed over the centerline and hit an oncoming pickup truck and then a parked car.
Esther D. McKimm, 80, of Emporium, PA, driver of a 2002 Dodge Neon, was transported by Emporium Ambulance to the Cameron County High School where she was airlifted by medical helicopter to the Altoona hospital.
Steven J. Welsh, 42, of Austin, PA, was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck east on Fourth Street (Rt. 120), when McKimm's Neon, traveling west, crossed the center line and struck the pickup in the left front bumper. The neon then traveled back across the westbound lane and struck a 2002 Dodge Stratus that was parked on the north side of the roadway, then continuing off the roadway where it came to rest on the sidewalk.
Welsh was not injured. Both drivers were using their seatbelts.
McKimm will be cited for Driving on Roadways Laned For Traffic.
Emporium Fire Dept. and Emporium Ambulance assisted troopers on scene.

Rev. John D. Alden

Rev. John D. Alden, 86, of 209 W. 5th St., Emporium  and Lakeland, FL died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on  Monday (November 28, 2011) morning. He was born January 24, 1925 in  Van, PA a son of the late John G and Wealtha Cotterman Alden. On July  29, 1950 in North Chili, NY., he married Nina Burls Alden, who  survives.
 Rev. Alden was a Pastor in the Keystone Confrence of the Free Methodist  Church having served as a Pastor in these Pennsylvania towns; Emlenton, New  Castle, Sharon, Eldred, Emporium, Bradford and Van. He was a veteran with the  US Army during WW II where he served as a Chaplains Assistant in the Asiatic  Pacific Theater.

Funeral Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral  Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium on Friday, December 2,  2011 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Robert Best, officiating. A Military  Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.
 Burial will be in the Portage Township Cemetery, Gardeau

Michael A. Carnovale,

Michael A. Carnovale, 55, of Orange, California passed away  at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Born  February 23, 1956 in St. Marys, PA, he was the son of Bruno A. Carnovale and  the late Marlene Wolfel Carnovale. On June 15, 1991 at St.  Patrick's Church in San Diego, CA, he married Elva Lau who  survives.
 Michael was a 1974 graduate of Cameron County High School and a graduate of  Mansfield University with a degree in law enforcement and criminology. He was  employed as a police officer in Atlantic City, NJ and Denver, CO before  joining the Marriott Hotel Corporation where he worked in 8 different  cities over a period of 26 years. Most recently he worked in San Francisco,  San Diego, Los Angeles and Dana Point, CA as hotel manager and director of  security and loss prevention. He was an expert in the installation and  maintenance of keyless-card lock, security camera and alarm systems. While at  the Marriott Marquis in NYC, Mike received the President's Award for  resuscitating a young boy who nearly drowned in the hotel pool. At the  Marriott-Anaheim Convention Center, many notable guests were hosted including  Presidents, Presidential candidates, government and military leaders as well  as foreign dignitaries. Mike would meet with the local police and government  officials to establish safety and security measures.

 In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Madeline, and a son,  Alexander; his father, Bruno Carnovale of Emporium, PA; four sisters, Debra  (David) Gschwendtner of St. Marys, PA, Maria (Dennis) DiBello of St. Leonard,  MD, Kathleen Carnovale of Emporium, PA, Laurie (James) Horrocks of York, PA;  one brother, Frank (Paula) Camovale of Bloomfield Hills MI, his  mother-in-law, Thelma Lau of Walnut, CA, and several nieces, nephews, aunts,  uncles, cousins and many friends.
 Michael loved gardening, cooking/baking, skiing and spending time with his  family. He enjoyed sports and was a member of the wrestling and football team  at Cameron County High School and played football for Mansfield University.  He was an active member of St. Norbert Catholic Church in Orange, CA and a  volunteer at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, CA. Mike was involved in  many community, professional and religious organizations.

 A Vigil and Rosary Service were held on October 17, 2011 at St.  Norbert's and a Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, October  18th at St. Norbert's with Father Patrick Rudolph as celebrant. Burial  was at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, CA.

 A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Marks Catholic Church in  Emporium on Saturday, December. 3, 2011 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert  and Rev. Daniel Wolfel Concelebrating.

 Memorials, if desired, may be made to Michael Carnovale fund, ℅ Elva  Carnovale.

Pauline A. Decker


Pauline A. Decker, 35, of 448 Meadow Rd., Emporium died at her residence on Sunday. (November 13, 2011) She was born November 21, 1975 in Coudersport a daughter of Keith Reickerd, Sr., Emporium and Betty Burdick Langley, Emporium.
She married the late Christian Decker, Sr.
Mrs. Decker graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1995 and then attended DuBois Business College. She worked as a caregiver. She was a member of the Emporium Fire Department Auxiliary, Vets Club and the Christabelle Club. She enjoyed attending her childrens sporting events.

Matthew Cash Grimone


Matthew Cash Grimone, 22, of 29 Grimone, Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Saturday, November 12, 2011 night following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born February 22, 1989 in Woodstock, Illinois a son of Matthew and Barbara Wilk Grimone, Emporium
Cash graduated from Cameron County High School. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved all sports.

Irvin L. Dempsey, Jr,

Irvin L. Dempsey, Jr, 77, of 167 Driftwood Ave.,PO Box 264, Driftwood, PA died at his residence on Saturday, November 5, 2011 morning.
He was born August 26, 1934 in Driftwood, PA a son of the late Irvin L. and Celesta Fiscus Dempsey, Sr.

He married Doris Ellenberger Dempsey, who Survives.
Mr. Dempsey served with the US Navy. He retired from Mallory Lumber, as a sawyer, where he worked for many years. He had enjoyed hunting and fishing

Traffic Stop On Rt 120

A Dickerson Run, PA man was charged with a  DUI Sunday afternoon at 4:50 pm when stopped on Route 120, approximately one mile east of Hunt's Run, in Lumber Township, Cameron County.
Robert B. Fields, 41, of Dickerson Run, PA, was stopped for a traffic violation by Trooper David A. Surra of the Emporium station. Trooper Surra found Fields to be under the influence of alcohol.
Charges of DUI and summary violations will be filed against Fields in District Court

William C. Johnson

William C. Johnson, 90, of 502 Singer Way, Red Hill, PA 18076 and formerly of Emporium, PA, died November 2, 2011 at St. Lukes Quakertown Hospital.
He was the beloved husband of Ruth E. (Worrell) Johnson for 67 years. Born in Varmland, Sweden he was a son of the late Carl O. and Bertha (Erickson) Johnson.

He retired in 1980 from Sylvania. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and Little League umpiring. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Emporium, the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club as well as the Men's Club in Cameron County.

Surviving with his wife are his sons, Gary M. and his wife Carole A. Johnson of Westport, MA and Roger W. and his wife Ginny A. Johnson of East Greenville, PA; his grandchildren: Scott Boan, Jill Brill, Brian Johnson and Robin Giuliano and his brother Donald Johnson of Smethport.
He is preceded in death by his siblings Lawrence and Ingrid Johnson.

Services will be held privately at the family's convenience.
